My first official paying job was to bus tables at Sugar Isle Inn a golf course and resort/restaurant. I was 18 years old and newly married and my husband was in basic training. I bussed tables for $2 an hour because my tips were supposed to make up the difference and get me to minimum wage. There was a dishwasher that was only 14 years old that would run out between loads and bus only the tables with money laying on them basically stealing my paycheck. I spoke to the boss about it and he didn't seem to care. He said basically then I better hurry up and beat Joe (the dishwasher) to the tables with money on them. I told him that would mean that I would be catering to empty tables rather than getting coffee for paying customers and I didn't think that would be good for business (HIS BUSINESS). He didn't seem to care, so I quit. Then he said, well your fired. Hmm seems like I already quit. Oh well water under the bridge over and done with kay-ser-ah whatever...

On this day in 1933, 10 year old Barney Flaherty answered an advertisement for newspaper carriers. He was hired as the first carrier for the "New York Sun." That is why today is Newspaper Carrier Day.

Have you ever had a job as a kid -- Newspaper Carrier, babysitter, lawn mower, snow shoveler? Tell about your experiences. Do you think it's a good idea for kids to have money-making jobs? Why or Why not? If you didn't have a job as a child, tell us about your first job ever at any age.
