It didn't seem like there was any interest in our mileage challenge last month, so I might just skip it this month unless there are others interested. Let me know here!

Note to self: don't wait to enter mileage in SP. Once you start getting behind, it gets harder to catch up. Finally got the numbers in, but didn't make my December goal. I'll try to do better next year.

Hopefully, tomorrow I'll have time to get my recent exercise and mileage plugged into SparkPeople. I've been exercising and tracking it by hand until I get a chance to sit down and enter it.

Great! I think I was so focused on reaching my outdoor biking mileage goal this month, that I wasn't even paying attention to my monthly mileage goal! Definitely won't be making it this month, but that's ok. A new month is right around the corner!

I forgot that I had a November goal, but then started a 40-day streak on Thanksgiving so have actually made half my goal just this week! I don't remember if I ran any before this weekend, but probably did since the weather's been so mild. We'll see what I can do these next two days, but I'll be tracking better in December. Bring it on!

So, today was my last outdoor bike ride of 2017, hitting my goal of 3,000 miles for the year. It was kind of a dreary day, but the sun peeked out to say goodbye and left me with a spectacular sunset over Lake Nokomis.

Nice work, Ken! I've been meaning to get out for an outdoor run but have been too lazy since my half in October. Now with lighter mornings and darker evenings, I'll probably join Team Treadmill but still try to get some miles in. Good luck!

Thank you! I did my last training run for Saturday's half marathon in Bemidji. It's probably also my last morning run, though with daylight savings coming up, maybe I'll be encouraged to actually run when the sun's up again! Should be a good motivator to try to bike to work too -- It'll be tough to get home and run before sunset, but biking should be ok daylight-wise. Good luck!

My tip is not to ride! emoticon Hahaha! Just kidding, well, not really. I'm a total cold baby. So this weather is VERY intimidating to me. I guess one tip is that if it is at all nice out, go for a ride then (don't wait)! A really sunny day can make the colder temps a little more manageable. While this weather might be good for walking, if you are riding fast, the wind chill can be terrible. I generally ride between 15-20 mph, so that cold wind is no fun. If I'm wearing a helmet, I have a cloth/buff that I put around my head/ears. That helps me stay a little warmer and keeps the cold wind out of my ears. If I'm not wearing a helmet, I wear "ear pops" which are like ear muffs without the band (they just pop onto your ear). Actually, I think my brand might be Ear Bags, but they are the same thing. Full fingered gloves. And, if your shoes breathe, put some plastic inside around your toes to keep the wind out (cutting a Ziploc bag diagonally works). Hope this helps. I still need to get over 200 miles in to reach 3,000 miles outside this year, so somehow I need to get those in before snowfall!

Biked today on Car Free Day! The bike to work was fine...we'll see how it goes on the way home when it feels like mid-90s. I have plenty of water and hopefully the wind will push me on the way!

Glad you got a lot of skating in! Maybe September will be a good month to bike to work for you. I got a lot of biking in, but less than I had planned on due to rain. I sure hope we keep some warm weather here for September since I don't like biking in the cold.

I haven't done a great job of tracking my miles, so I may have more, but I also know that I haven't biked at all in August so I won't make my goal. I've done a lot of skating but the scale won't move. The number doesn't matter, though. What matters is that I (think I) am a better skater!

I had to bike across the river after work last Wednesday to pick up my nephew and then drive home so I forgot that the initial ride still counted as mileage! I'll adjust. But it is amazingly downhill - in a scary way, not a fun way, for the middle part of the ride and then the bluff up the hill is too steep so I have to walk the bike a bit. I felt a bit silly, but I'm happy I made it!

I won't hit my June goal because I didn't bike to work enough, but it's a good lesson in planning and goal setting going forward.

Hope everyone else is doing well and enjoying the cooler weather! I love it.

I thought of biking to my meeting in Roseville, but didn't really know the way and how long it would take me, so I decided to drive but eat dinner instead. My running buddy overslept this morning so I waited awhile and then started our loop without her, but then realized I could bike to work and if I bike to work why do I need to run 3 miles first!? So I feel super energized and exercise-y this morning after 11 miles total so far!

Thwarted by Mother Nature and my fear! I wanted to bike to work today, but it was cold and raining and I don't think I have enough reflective materials on my bike or a waterproof bright yellow jacket...so I slept in and did NOT bike to work. And now I am a little sad. Maybe I'll have time tonight to ride?

Thanks! And, yes, we were very lucky with our timing. If we had left 20 minutes earlier or later on Sunday, we would have been in really big trouble. And, Saturday would have been a LOT hotter if we would have waited. I'm so glad my early bird team mates convinced me not to sleep, haha! No shame in your colleague calling it. And, I think that's pretty awesome they are thinking of making up the miles. I had planned on doing the same thing if something unfortunate had happened. Did a 14.5 mile recovery ride tonight (after the rain, I'm not up for another rainy ride yet!).

Wow, Ken, that sounds great! That is vastly different than the report I got from one of my colleagues who left later on both days and struggled mightily. They were only at Rush City on Sunday when it was time to seek shelter and she didn't have any rain gear, so they called it from there and hopped a ride back. She thinks she made it just a bit over 100 of the 150 miles so is thinking of doing the Wyoming-White Bear stretch some weekend.

I got up early Saturday to run - I'm with you and not a morning person, but it's great motivation when the forecast is 95 degrees! I got my 60-minute run in and then got some additional exercise moving the remains of our deck yesterday afternoon into the dumpster. Don't worry - it was a planned demolition and not the result of the storm yesterday, but what an impressive storm!

I'm glad you had a successful ride!

MS 150 complete! And, AWESOME! emoticon

First, Katie, I did see a Wenck jersey (well, two, but I'm 90% sure that one was the same person in a another location). But, there were thousands of us, so it was a big crowd. Second, of the six of us on our team, two had hybrids and they did great! Four of us went ahead because we rode a little faster than the other two (but, the hybrids were part of the group of four of us that were riding faster). So, I rode alongside the hybrids the entire time. It's just your level of riding and not your bike. And, it doesn't matter your level because people were going all sorts of speeds. It's a ride, not a race. There were all sorts of bikes, people, etc. and it was awesome and everyone I met was awesome. Seriously, like the happiest large group of people I've ever seen.

We made really good time despite a lot of unplanned conditions. We averaged 14.4 mph the first day and 15.2 mph the second. And, the time just flew! I would guess the other two in our team probably averaged around 13 or so. Saturday was really windy for a lot of it (and we were riding directly into the wind, which I guess is unusual for this ride). Fortunately, the beginning was pretty wooded, so that cut some of the wind. But, when we got out into the open, it got a little tough at times (although it was probably also because it was really sunny and got pretty hot as the day progressed). We left early to beat the heat, which was definitely worth it (even though I'm not a morning person). I woke up at 4:20 on Saturday and 4:10 on Sunday. So, that that was the only really horrible part, but one we were on the trails (at 6:20 and 5:50 respectively) all was good. Sunday was really cold (even though we weren't as far north). I wore a rain jacket in the beginning due to the forecast, but we left early to avoid a lot of the rain, so I took it off and stuffed it in my jersey once I started warming up. when we got to the lunch rest stop in North Branch, there were sirens going off and they directed everyone to take shelter in various buildings. We ended up in a church basement. It was actually kind of a nice break.Once the worst of the storm blew over, we headed back out, now in the rain, with rain gear and wet bikes. There had been so much hail that it actually drifted like snow and there were people out plowing and shoveling the paths, but we still had to deal with icy conditions (which, btw, my road bike handled well). Of every worst-case scenario I thought of, icy conditions definitely wasn't one of them!!! It wasn't raining too hard, so it was fine (plus we made it over half way before we had to deal with rain, so that was good). So glad we left early to beat it! Eventually it got a little warmer and we took off our rain jackets at the last rest stop so we'd look good with our jerseys coming in to the finish (although two of us didn't even have jackets with!). Basically, after the rain, we just had to avoid the fallen branches and we were done! Honestly, it sounds perilous and others who rode it in the past said it was one of the worst weather combos they ever had, but it really wasn't that bad. Although, if you didn't leave early it probably could have been a lot worse than we had it. One person in our faster group of four had only biked 27 miles as their farthest bike ride prior to this, so it is definitely doable! And, all of us didn't really start training until a month ago (you are obviously supposed to train longer than that). But, we did Day 1 in 5 hours riding and Day 2 in about 8 minutes less even though it was more miles.

So, can I sign any of you up? We're looking for more teammates in 2018!

Have a great ride, Ken! And yes, it seems I am running out of excuses not to join you and my colleagues on the MS150! They are on our work team, so if you see brightly colored Wenck jerseys, they probably know me. Please do let me know how your teammates do on the hybrid!

This is my first week without a bike ride to work due to commitments afterwards, but I'll plan better next time. I did get 3 runs in during the week and have one scheduled for tomorrow. Dare I say I am starting to feel like a real runner again? emoticon

Thanks! I think it is totally doable on a good hybrid. I've been using a hybrid and road bike for almost a month now and generally go faster on the hybrid. The bike store people said that it is probably because it rides like the mountain bikes I'm used to and that I'm riding more cautiously on the road bike. I actually rode the MS Twin Cities ride on the hybrid because I didn't have time to train on the road bike yet. At least one person on our team is using a hybrid, so I'll let you know how it goes!

Are your coworkers on a team I would recognize? I'm riding on the Sanofi-Genzyme team (which is the biotech company that makes the MS drug that I'm on).

My coworkers were just having that discussion! "I don't mind it when it's hot." "As long as it's not too windy" "It probably will be" "Hinckley is so fun, except for all the bugs." "Katie, you should join us!?"

And I say, "for the bugs and the heat and the wind?"

I don't have a road bike and doubt I could do 150 miles on my hybrid, but I may be running out of excuses and may be out there next year! Good luck this weekend! I'll be hoping for no storms, no excessive heat, only tailwinds, and no bugs for all of you!

I'm hoping the weather is moderate this weekend for my MS 150 ride. Now there might be thunderstorms Saturday morning in Duluth, which is probably my biggest concern. I don't want it to be too hot, but I REALLY don't want it to rain/storm. *fingers crossed*

Happy National Running Day! I didn't realize it was until I got done with a 2.5. mile morning run. emoticon

For the first time in many weeks, I won't have a convenient day to ride my bike. I had thought Friday would be good, but I have to take my aunt to an appointment, so I'll just have to make it a point to bike this weekend in addition to running. So if I get up early enough to beat the heat, I can run, and if not, I can bike. I'm late with the plan but it'll still work!

I'm in Minneapolis. I get to a lot of places while biking, but don't think I've ever been to Medicine Lake. Good luck in finding a riding buddy!

I met a friend at the Lake Elmo Park Preserve yesterday and we did a 5 mile trail run, which was lovely and hilly but mostly lovely...and that was my 100th mile of the month! I biked to work today so I'll actually meet and pass my goal and keep my streak of biking to work at least once a week. Feels great!

Hope you're able to get out today! I wanted to bike, but my legs protested after a trail run and hockey game yesterday. Am hoping for later this week if the weather holds - I need my yard to dry out too! Take care.

Wow, well done! I couldn't bike today, this weather is just too cold for me to bike. Luckily, I work from home, so I didn't need to bike to work, I just took the stairs.

I did do the Bike MS: Twin Cities Ride last Saturday. It went great for my first organized bike ride. I did the 44 mile route and it was actually pretty easy. I still have a lot of training to do for the MS 150 that is coming up in 3 weeks and, unfortunately, the weather this week didn't help with that. I hope we get some nicer weather ASAP because I'm running out of time!

Be careful what I wish for - I biked to work today since it's Bike to Work Day AND it's supposed to be cloudy-but-not-rainy. But I should definitely have worn bike gloves. Chilly!

I am looking forward to the cooler weather -- I ran 3 miles at noon last Saturday and boy was that a dumb idea. I'm not a fan of heat anyway and running in full sun did not make me happy. It's going to take effort to get some miles in today and tomorrow with this weather, but I need to! Let's do it!

I'm glad to know I'm not the only one cranking out miles on a hybrid bike! At least I think it's a hybrid and not a mountain bike...my knowledge is severely lacking, so I have a safety clinic/group ride down the Gateway on my calendar now. Good luck with the road bike! I know it would make my work commute faster, but there's a fair bit of broken glass where I bike and I'm terrified of getting a flat. Keep up the good work!

47.37 mile bide ride today (my longest so far this year)! emoticon emoticon
My partner and I finally picked out new bikes yesterday, so I wanted to get in a big ride today before my Bike MS: Twin Cities Ride this Saturday. We got a hybrid/fitness bike for my partner and I got a road bike (we had both been using old heavy mountain bikes for years). I used the hybrid today and will use it on the ride this weekend. But, then I'll start training for the MS 150 (which is in June) using my road bike. The road bike is a little different, so I thought I would need more time to get familiar with it before a big ride. Hope everyone is doing well and getting their miles in!

Awesome, Katie! Well done! I biked quite a bit today, too. Was test-riding some new bikes and then a 20 mile ride after work. I really need a new bike before I do the MS 150 next month. Deciding which is the right bike is going to be tough, I've been putting it off for about 3 years now.

I hope you're sitting down, because this is very exciting: I biked to work today. I was even on time to get to work and will calibrate better to be able to start work on time after showering. But it's a beautiful day, I didn't get run over OR honked at (the former is not surprising, the latter is), and I am hyper because of the endorphins and just how happy biking made me. It's easy to say now before I even do the return trip home, but I hope I can bike to work often this summer! Also, I am actually for once on track with my mileage goal for the month. It's weird but I like it!

Thank you! I'll be jealous of your track coaching and running for another week until I test it. When I get back to running, though, I'll be more thankful for my (generally good) health and abilities!

Love the great weather, but don't love spraining/breaking a toe on Friday night before the nice weekend. I've so far discovered that cleaning up a ditch hurts the toe, running around with the nephew hurts, and hockey hurts more than I expected given the skate's protection. But taping it and icing when I can means I can't use the toe as an excuse and will need to get after it to get closer to meeting my April goal!

You got that right Ken. We had our track meet last night. Then my family and I attended the March for Science in Northfield. Hmmm...what to do, what to do tomorrow. Hope everyone had the opportunity to enjoy the sunshine today.

Monday's weather was amazing. It was our first track practice without rain - finally. Getting the 2nd and 3rd graders conditioned for the 800 (2x around the track). Our first meet is Friday and I think 1/2 of them are ready for it. It felt so good to run with them on the track. I'll have to keep this up after track season is over.

I hadn't tracked in a while, but I rode my bike and walked/ran home for a tune-up, then went on an 8-mile walk with family over Easter weekend, then ran to the shop and biked home. Feels great to get back on track!
