It looks like we didn't have much interest in the prize challenge during January. Thanks to HOLLYM48 and BITFLIPPER for participating! It looked like we had a clear winner, but since this was a random drawing (using WheelDecide.com), it was up in the air until now.

HOLLYM48 was the winner!

The prize is a hardcover copy of The Spark Solution book! Or, if you already have a copy of the book, I'll send you a special, shiny SparkGoodie. I'll send you SparkMail to confirm.

Sounds like a great day, Holly! We had fun last night (too much?), hahaha! We ended up spending the evening at The Shout House downtown and everyone had a great time. I think my weigh in tomorrow is going to suffer, but it was worth it and kind of expected with everything going on. I'm not too worried.

p.s. I just posted the February Mileage Challenge and will look into doing another type of challenge as well. Give me a day or two and I will post the results of the this challenge as well!

Yes, the sodium content is always way to high!
Great job on the spinning and I am so glad you guys are having so much time spending as much time together and having fun!
Today was a slow day to begin with, my parents came up for the afternoon so we pretty much sat around and talked and had a very healthy lunch of cabbage rolls with egg lemon sauce made by my hubby! Delicious!
Then after they left, I needed to get my steps in so I went and walked for 4 miles on the treadmill.
January is over and we are on to February and Spring will be here before we know it!
Have a great time out for drinks and music, sounds fun!

I can do it!!

Mmmm, the Ancho Salmon sounds delicious! I love that more and more restaurants are starting to become calorie-conscious. Now, if they can start looking at sodium content, it'll be awesome!
Last night's pizza dinner went great and everyone had a fun time. It's kind of strange when we get together with my partner's brother and his family since they aren't here more than once a year, but then when they are in the States, we get together a bunch. There's always a ton of stuff to talk about and the time goes by sooo fast! It just feels like there isn't enough time and it's all so scrunched together. Now, tonight we're all headed downtown (minus the children) for drinks and music. I got in some spinning and strength training earlier today. I hope that I won't get tired!

home made pizza sounds delicious Ken! I hope you all have a great time creating and eating!!
We went to Chili's tonight and they have a great new item on their light menu, Ancho Salmon.
Served with rice and broccoli for only 600 calories! My first instinct wherever we go is to always flip to the lighter options and I am so glad that so many restaurants are going that direction now!
Rest night as far as exercise goes and I can really use it tonight! Have an awesome Friday!

We're hosting dinner tonight and doing homemade "build your own" pizzas. That always helps me keep my calories and sodium where I want them. And, the kids love coming up with crazy creations!

Kudos on trying out some new stuff, Holly! And, I'm joining you (virtually) for a huge salad tonight. I eat them often. Tonight's will be topped with a bunch of steamed yellow pepper (my current favorite) and a broccoli and cheese stuffed chicken breast for protein.

Great job on tracking regardless Ken! That is not always easy to do.

I tried out the Piyo Sweat dvd tonight that a friend let me borrow to see if I want to purchase them. They are a good workout, lots of stretching and strength in there. I am going to try it a few times and decide if I want to buy the dvd's to add to my collection. I have a much harder time watching things on the computer and going along with the moves but I am trying it out with the kettle bell as well. I have always been a big fan of cardio so these other things are good additions to add in the strength.
Had a huge salad with dinner as well since I was craving that.
Hard to believe there are only 2 more days in January!
Have a great evening!

I love when you plan for a little or a light exercise routine and it automagically turns into more! emoticon
Unfortunately, I had the opposite happen to me today! emoticon
I planned for a lower calorie and higher exercise day, but ended up with the opposite. I still tracked my intake and got in a little strength training tonight. Tomorrow will be better!

Great job Ken on getting off a little early to get your spinning in. I work at 7a and leave by 315p or 330p everyday so we always have an early dinner and then off to the gym for me. My gym is in my basement which is why I go so frequently!
Today I thought it would be a slow walk but when I got on the treadmill I felt like doing intervals so I ran/walked the first 2.5 miles and then walked another 1.75. Feeling good but I can certainly feel the muscles that I used last night throwing that kettle bell around!
Have a great evening!

I spun this afternoon (I'm starting to get into the habit of checking out of work a little early to exercise when we have stuff going on in the evening). I start earlier these days anyway, so it's no big deal. And, I love getting it out of the way and still having the whole evening open.

I did the 51 minute kettle bell workout with Angie Miller tonight! Wow, that is a killer workout!

Well done on the miles, Holly! Get in Gear sounds awesome! I love that area and put on major miles over there on my bike in the spring and autumn. I looked up my friend's run. He is doing the Get Lucky in March. It's a 7K and a Half Marathon. I'm pretty sure he is doing the Half. I'll need to ask him next time we get together, I'm not positive if he had decided the last time we talked about it.

I did a little strength training today while I'm still recovering from yesterday's spin session. And, yes, I love the long sessions. I think somewhere between 55-65 minutes is when my endorphins or whatever chemicals peak. At that point, barring any physical discomfort, I feel like I could just keep on going all day! That's how I end up doing lots insanely long bike rides in the summertime. Haha!

And, thanks for the anniversary wishes! I'm right with you on the "strangle days," but luckily the awesome days way outnumber them!

It is the Get in Gear 5K/10K 1/2 marathon at Minnehaha. We did the 5K last year, it was very cold for late April but I really enjoyed the course and since I really wanted to do a 10K run this year, I figured that would be a good time. A little cool for a longer run will be good.

Great job on the long spinning session Ken! I bet that felt good! I know that when I exercise for my long run and then spend time stretching, it feels like I have accomplished so much.
Congrats on your 19 year anniversary with your partner too. What a wonderful thing to have a long term relationship! I will be celebrating 30 years with my hubby this August. Someday's you want to strangle them but I could not live without him.
Today was kind of a quiet day, took my daughters out for dinner and had my usual, a big salad.
We went to Granite City and I love their Asian Chicken salad so that was my choice.
I still needed to get some steps in to reach 10,000 today so I ran around the kitchen and hallway with my dog until I got my 5 miles in!
Tomorrow I hope to do kettlebell again!

emoticon Holly! You are going to do great in April! Which run is it? My friend (who ran a marathon for the first time last year) is running something again this spring. I think it might be a 10K, although I'm thinking it might be in March. There are always so many events and runs going on in the Twin Cities!
emoticon emoticon
No more running for me, until I figure out if there is a fix for my foot problem. emoticon
But, I got in a super-long spinning session today! emoticon

Great job getting the elliptical in early Ken!!! Brunch until 6p, wow that is one lunch brunch but sometimes when you are talking and having fun, time just flies by so glad to hear you guys had so much fun! We had driven by the course the other day and it looked awesome. Fox news was just showing what happened last evening and I watched about 20 mins of it, wow, those guys just fly. I can only imagine the crowds and the fact that there was no parking because that area is not great when it comes to that!
I got my 10K training run in today, a straight 5 miles of running and then the last 1.2 mile walking and running in about one hour and 15 mins.. I know that I will be able to do the 10K I signed up for in April with no problem, it won't be the fastest time, but I am doing it to prove a point to myself, that I can do anything I tell myself I can do!
Have a great week and let's keep on doing our best to be the best that we can be!

It was a perfect winter day for a walk, glad you got a nice one in, Holly! I'm glad I used our elliptical before going to brunch today, because we didn't leave "brunch" until after 6pm! It was a long day, but fun! We also went to downtown St. Paul this evening to check out the Red Bull Crashed Ice event at the Cathedral, as well as the ice sculptures. It was insanely busy and we actually never ended up parking. We just drove around for what seemed like hours looking for parking. At one point, we were right next to the Cathedral and could see the Crashed Ice track and participants fairly well. But, it was getting late and we just gave up due to traffic.

I'm hoping the weather stays this way for a couple weeks!

ahhh, at long last, a walk outside today! This feels like a heatwave doesn't it!!!!
3.5 miles on the walking trail around the lake today. It is quite a workout when you are walking on snowy paths instead of just plain walking paths but I enjoyed every single minute of it. I was out for 55 minutes and had a great time! Let's hope this great weather stays with us for a few more weeks and February will be almost over!!!
What a great way to spend the day!

I did strength training tonight at home and drank a ton of water today.

My partner's brother and his family arrived today and will be spending the next few weeks in town. They live in Taiwan, where he runs a school and teaches English. Their visits are always a lot of fun. We visited with them a little bit tonight and will be doing brunch with the whole family tomorrow. I have a feeling the next few weeks are going to be a little tougher than usual since they will be filled with events and outings that will most likely center around food. But, I'll track my way through it!

I took a rest day for today and went out with my daughter and her boyfriend and my husband to Chianti Grill. I had my most favorite thing on the menu, the orange salmon salad! Lots of spinach with a small filet of salmon! It is so good.
Spinning does sound like a fun thing to do Ken, especially if you are into biking during nice weather! If I ever join a gym, I will have to look into that!

In my opinion, spinning is (or at least feels) quite a bit different from stationary biking. My preferred exercise is outdoor biking and spinning feels the most like outdoor biking to me. At our gym, there are actually four different types of bikes. The spinning cycles (which are in their own room for classes), the regular stationary bikes, the recumbent stationary bikes (which are lower to the ground and you lean back more) and the hybrid bikes which are between the regular and recumbent stationary bikes.
emoticon
I actually don't do the spinning classes. I'm one of a dozen or so people at our gym that use the spinning room when the classes aren't in session. And, most of the time when I'm spinning it's just me and a couple other people in the fairly big, stadium-style classroom. The music is too loud for my taste during the classes (and not the music I'd really want to listen to either). Plus, I'm a fairly avid biker, so other than watching a few YouTube videos to give me some ideas in the beginning and to figure out how to adjust the bike properly, I pretty much know what to do and how to push myself.

I like the spin bikes because I'm in roughly the same position that I'm in when I bike in outdoors, so my back feels better after spinning than when I use any of the other bikes. Plus, I like how the resistance works and that you can alternate between sitting and standing (much like you would on a real bike if you were climbing a hill). And, yes, you can go super fast! Although, I usually have the resistance turned up quite a bit to cut the speed down.

No spinning for me today though, just an easy 20 minute trot on the elliptical. Here's to a great week!

Yes, calorie burn is really hard to determine but I guess as long as I know I am doing something and seeing a difference, then it is all good.
Great job on the spinning Ken! Is spinning different than a stationary bike? When I see it on commercials, it looks like real bikes that are connected to a pole? and people are going at crazy speeds on them. And how is a spinning class conducted? Does the instructor tell you what gear to put it in and what resistance to use? Sounds like hard work whatever it is!
Today I am feeling the burn of the workout from yesterday. I can really feel it in my buttocks from all those kicks and lifts while hefting that kettlebell around. Today I decided to go gentle so went for a slower walk for 50 minutes to get the rest of my steps and the miles in.
Have a great week!

Awesome, Holly! Well done! Sometimes I struggle to understand the "real" calorie burn of many of the exercises I do. On an outdoor bike ride, I have three different phone apps that all give me different burns (even though I've given all of them the same age, weight, sex, etc.) and then SP will give me another different number when I enter the ride here. And, when spinning, the bike gives me a number which takes into account how hard I actually worked (RPM & Resistance), but who knows what sex and weight it is taking into account to calculate that number since it doesn't prompt for weight/sex. Then, my phone app gives me different numbers when I enter my time and select a vaguely defined intensity level. And, of course, SP then gives me a very different number, but doesn't take into account how hard I actually worked. Usually I ignore all of this data, but sometimes it bothers me and I look into getting an accurate count. Unfortunately, after researching, I usually get overwhelmed, so I just let it be since I lost a ton of weight without worrying about it. Hahaha! Anyway, I went spinning for quite a long time today and feel great now. Tired, but great!

Today was a killer workout day! After browsing several different kettlebell workout videos yesterday and watching them to make sure I could do the moves, I decided on the 51 minute bootcamp by Angie Miller. What an awesome workout that was. I was able to keep up and do the majority of the moves, the one exception was the pushups with the kettlebell. I tried a couple and then decided to do something different.
After recovering from that for a couple of hours, I went to the basement to the treadmill for an hour for a nice leisurely walk to stretch out the leg muscles!
When putting in the kettle bell workout in the exercise tracker, it says I burned 1000 calories which seems way to high, but I will take credit for 1/2 of them since it says that you can burn up to 20 calories per minute depending on hard you are working.
Regardless, it was a great workout and I feel ready for the week to come!
Let's have a great week!

That is a great quote Ken! Very motivational and puts it all in perspective!
I did 5 miles on the treadmill today, just a nice paced walk. I was craving salad again so I had that for lunch. I went to an Italian restaurant for dinner and enjoyed myself and ate healthy and then on to the movie, The imitation game, great movie! I highly recommend it!
Tomorrow I hope to get in the kettle bell again and a 10K run/walk!

I can do it!!

SP Short-Term Action Step: Start where you are.

I added the above short-term action step back whenever SparkPeople added the Goal Board to the Start Page. A month or so ago, I came across the longer version of the quote: "Start where you are. Use what you have. Do what you can." and today I finally updated my Goal Board to include the whole quote. I find it very calming and motivational.

I believe she ended up have a disc replaced and two vertebrae fused together. This was for hip pain that she started having about a month or two ago, which gradually became unbearable. When we visited today, she was in good spirits and I think all of her hip pain is completely gone (although now the incision area obviously hurts). I believe she is expected to go home on Saturday, but I assume someone (probably my partner) will need to stay with her for a few days. Right after visiting her, we heading to the gym and did strength training tonight. Now, I'm going to head downstairs for a late dinner and hopefully get to bed at a decent time tonight.

I took another rest evening today because my husband and I had some arrangements to make which we finished! I did have a delicious Greek Salad for dinner and Cod to go along with it so that was very healthy! Glad to see that Friday is almost here!
I hope your partner's mother is doing well Ken, back surgery is no fun. I know, I have actually had lower back surgery several years ago. I hope that she is up and at 'em in no time!
Since I walk around a hospital all day long it was a great reminder from you to think of those that don't see it day in and day out. There is so much that modern medicine can do for us these days and it all starts with us taking good care of ourselves from the get go!

Enjoy the rest and recovery Holly! I don't think I'm a fan of French food (other than crepes, which I love). But, I agree about American restaurant portions being pretty out of control. I worked out at home tonight on the elliptical. My partner's mom was in the hospital today for emergency back surgery, so we visited her and it seems like everything went well. I always take a lot away from visiting people in the hospital. Walking the halls is such a powerful reminder of how both resilient and fragile the human body is.

Another kettle bell workout today! I am doing the warm up, the slim down and the arm strengthening of the dvd. It is the first 30 minutes followed by an hour on the treadmill. I am wiped for day, going for a nice hot shower and on to bed.
Have a great Tuesday evening and a great tomorrow!

The adjustable bell sounds cool! I didn't know they made those. I love adjustable equipment since I'm a minimalist and don't like having a lot of "stuff". I mostly work out at the gym, but the dumbbells we have at home are also adjustable. Speaking of them, I did strength training tonight and am hoping to get to bed soon. I had always been a night person, even though I mostly work during the day. But, ever since I stopped drinking diet soda late this summer, after my bike accident, I just started waking up early (and refreshed!). Now, I love it, because it gives me some "me time" in the morning before my day starts. And, it kind of makes me always feel ahead of schedule, which is a very new feeling for me!

The kettle bell was really quite fun and I got an adjustable bell that you can add and take off weights so the base is 5lbs and then the next one is 3 lbs and the last one is 4 lbs so it really does great at the beginners level for me!
I was really tired from yesterday's exercise but decided to go and walk for 30 minutes to get in my steps and I made it.
Now it is time for a hot shower and some relaxation time. My muscles were really feeling the kettle bell workout and the 10K walk/run last night so I didn't want to over do it today!
Happy Monday!
It is hard to transition to days Ken. I used to work evenings and I loved it but then we had kids and I moved to a day shift so now I am at work by 630a and every morning as I get up at 530a I think to myself, I hate getting up early. But I make the most of it and if you asked my patients, they would say, oh, she is a morning person! I can fool them!

I can do it!!

I've always been curious about kettlebells, they sound interesting! I'm going to need to let my wrist fully heal from my accident last summer before I check them out for myself. I did the elliptical and spinning today and hopefully will fall asleep in just a bit because I was up way too late last night when we had some friends over for dinner. They left at 2am, which was kind of tough since I've been transitioning into a morning person. And, I had just gotten back on track after New Year's Eve! Oops! I hope everyone has a great week!

While I was at Target today, I decided to checkout the fitness section! There was a kettlebell on sale so I decided why not get it. I have been wondering for awhile how that was for a workout. I brought it home and watched the dvd first and then decided I was ready to tackle it. I got through the first 2 workouts and about 1/2 way through the lower leg workout and then went to the cool down since I still wanted to run on the treadmill. What a great workout! I can see that really great for strength training which I am not real good about doing so this will really help.
After 30 minutes of doing the kettle bell, I was ready to head to the downstairs gym for the 10K training that I still wanted to get done. I did in fact run 3.25steady, walk/ran in 1 minute intervals for the next mile and a three quarters and then walked the last mile and .2 for a total of 1 hour and 22 minutes. Then on to stretching all those aching muscles! So now it it is time for a hot shower and relaxing before bedtime!
Happy Sunday evening, hope yours was fantastic!

Happy Saturday!
I hope everyone had a great day! Lot's of errands to run today! I needed to go to Costco because I love their produce and stocked up on many different kinds of fresh veggies!
I also do laundry on Saturday so I made 25 trips up and down stairs and danced and ran around the basement while waiting for my loads to finish. I always try to see how many flights of stairs I can get on laundry day so take stuff upstairs one or two items at a time. It drives my dog a little crazy because she can't stand when I am out of her sight.
Tomorrow I hope to get my 10K training in on the treadmill so lot's of steps for Sunday!
Have a great evening and keep on pushing to be the best that you can be!
Ken, great job on all those glasses of water, I lose track because every time my glass gets low, I put in more ice and fill it up and keep on drinking all day long!

I don't know about all of you, but I am sure glad it is Friday!!!!
I did get my 5 miles in today and the last mile of it was running back and forth in my living room tonight after we got home from eating out.
I chose as healthy as I could, I had a taco salad. I had well over 1000 calories left for the day so it should have fit ok in the calorie range for today.
I hope everyone has a great weekend, looking forward to getting a good workout in tomorrow and Sunday.
Stay warm!

I 1000% agree with you, BITFLIPPER, about change coming when you believe that you can change. And, not just regarding weight loss, this works for virtually anything. Sometimes when I try explaining that to others (who haven't experienced it themselves), it's hard to put into words just how powerful this is. It's that deep down hope/faith/belief that something is possible. And, not just possible for someone else to achieve, but possible for you. This has changed (and continues to change) my life in many more aspects than just weight loss. But, like you said, until someone reaches that point, support and encouragement is really all any of us can offer.
emoticon

Good job on the treadmill action tonight, Holly! I went to the gym and did some spinning (at a lighter resistance than usual since my foot has been bothering me). And, enjoyed a big salad of lettuce, yellow peppers and cod for dinner.

I really wanted to sit around and do nothing tonight, and then I said "Holly, get your butt moving!" So I grabbed my nook and headed for the treadmill. I did a slow 3 mile walk, but it was still 3 miles! and I was only going to do a 1/2 hour but got involved in my story so ended up doing an hour!

Ack. What will happen to me when the kids are grown and gone and we might live back in town? We have no machinery out on our little hobby farm so everything is moved by hand/back ... for now.

Still, before kids and moving to the country, my wife and I were always taking walks and hitting the biking/skating trails. Family is so valuable for help in motivation, right?

Computer programmers/geeks can take active breaks from the keyboard, right?

The change comes when you believe that you CAN make a difference. Until someone reaches this point, I just try to be encouraging, positive, and patient (and point them to SP).

Honestly, getting out of the house and office is such a habit now that I hardly even think about it except on extremely harsh days or if I'm sick. But, pre-SparkPeople, staying in became a really bad habit of mine. Thank goodness, those days are over! I was out and about all day today and ending up getting my elliptical in tonight at home (actually just a few minutes ago, ugh, I hate late night workouts!).

Ken, if I worked from home, I would not be able to go out after work! I would probably hibernate all winter long so good for you for getting out there and going to spinning class!
I have never seen a crossfit class bitflipper, but it sure looks like a good workout so good for you!
I have a little over 4 miles in for the day and I am taking care of myself by taking the night off and relaxing my muscles! That is really hard for me to do so I have to force myself to take a day off.
I did have a delicious huge salad for dinner with a nice piece of chicken to go along with it and of course, my gallon of water for the day.
Stay warm, bundle up, that wind is wicked! Only 2 months of this weather right????
Let's hope so!

Wow, Holly, you sure keep yourself moving! Well done!
BITFLIPPER, I have a relative that just had the exact same experience at his wife's Crossfit!
emoticon

I work from home, and frigid days like today make me wish I wasn't running a super long streak of getting out of the house and going somewhere every day. It would be nice to just stay in for the day, but that streak was one of the small (yet crucial) baby steps for my weight loss and I don't plan on breaking it any time soon. Instead, I went to the grocery store and to the gym for spinning tonight. Obviously, I survived.

The wind died down today and so the -17F morning seemed beautiful. By noon it was +5F and I had an urge to walk or run for lunch. (Hard to do in a shirt and tie.)

Good job on your miles. I'm jealous ... er ... I mean ... happy for you. lol

Joined wife at her Crossfit class tonight and had my ego handed to me. I can run a long way. I can lift heavy weights. I haven't however, learned to manage both at the same time so I didn't manage my energy well. No prob though. All for fitness, and I saw a lot of people from my work there. Good on them! So happy to see so many people doing AMAZING things!

Bitflipper, keep up the awesome support of your coworkers, it is amazing what your influence can do for others! Show them what healthy looks like!
I had 5 miles in from work today and worked out on the treadmill for an hour and got another 4 miles in alternating minutes with walking and running for the first 30 mins and then a fast walk for another 35 until I had 4 miles in!
Let's keep up the great work and pray for the warmer weather to get here! Only 2 months of this bitterly cold right?

emoticon Holly and BITFLIPPER!

Tonight, I braved the icy weather (and the busiest day of the year at the gym) to do my strength training. It was soooo busy, and I had to alter my workout because of it. But, it was fine and it will start to clear out in a couple weeks since most people's New Year's motivation fades, unfortunately.

Ken and Holly - Agreed about helping people to find the assets in Sparkpeople. SP was instrumental in my life changes three years ago. (I never thought I'd even run, much less enjoy it!)

I see other people in the lunchroom at work who are trying to quit sodas and without trying to be over dramatic, I voice my support.

Today's activities? Still recovering from yesterday's weightlifting so I just shoveled snow ... slowly and painfully. Ack.

Thanks for support, everyone!

I did 30 minutes on the elliptical this morning, and if time allows, I'll get my spinning in at the gym later this afternoon. Enjoy the rest of your weekend everyone!

Hi Bitflipper and great job helping your sister Ken!
I will get in my run today, hoping to do a 10k on the treadmill. 4 miles running and then 2.2 miles walking!
Have a great day everyone!
Decided I could run for 5 miles and I did! I ran less than a 12 min mile per mile and walked for the last 1.2. I think 2015 is going to be a great year~!

Switched from using flavor packets in water to using lime or lemon juice instead. (Switched from a lifetime of Diet Coke to water three years ago when I started changing my life.)

Switched from late night workouts to early morning and I find I don't need/want coffee messing up my sleep at night and I end up sleeping 5-7 hours/night instead of 3-5. (I am a computer programmer.)

Feeling better!

Today, I'm making my strength training happen even though I have a busy work day today and we have our 2nd family Christmas this evening. So, I'm taking my 30 minute home strength training routine from last week and splitting it up by doing 1 set of each exercise throughout the day. Since I work at home and have weights in our basement, I'm setting an alarm to run down there every 20 minutes, do a set and come back. By the time the day is over, I'll have my full workout complete! Plus, since I'll be going up and down 2 flights of stairs each time, I'll actually be getting even more activity in. This isn't how I normally do it, but sometimes you've got to do what you can to fit everything in.

Hi! My name is Holly and I have been with SP for 2 1/2 years. I started in June of 2012 because I wanted to lose weight and I hit maintenance in July of 2013. I have maintained my weight loss since that time by getting in plenty of exercise each and every day and eating healthy. I usually try to get in at least 10,000 steps a day which I can do at work some days as I have a busy job but I also try to get in another hour at home of either walking, running or elliptical. I have learned to love exercise and look forward to it as my "Me" time. It really helps me keep things in perspective and get rid of stress as I go about my walking or running!
I have been able to participate in 5 5K's and hope to run at least 2 or 3 again this year in addition, I would love to do a 10K. I am not sure I could run the entire thing but I know I could walk/run it.
I log into SP every single day because I look forward to seeing how all of my SP friends are doing and I like being accountable by tracking all food and exercise pretty much every day.
I am looking forward to the January challenges!

I can do it!!

Hi, my name is Ken. I originally used SparkPeople to lose a fairly massive amount of weight. I stay here to maintain my weight, improve my fitness levels and keep myself inundated with health and wellness info. The community and health information here keep me mindful of the daily choices I make. Late last summer, during the last few miles of a 100-mile bike ride, I had a pretty bad accident resulting in multiple injuries. This was definitely a bump in the road for some of my 2014 goals (no pun intended). I'm still recovering and maintaining at a slightly higher weight than I'd prefer, although I'm happy with where I'm at considering how the year played out. My goal right now is to build up my strength again and slowly lose a few pounds while my body continues to heal.

Here's another month-long challenge for January! Since this team is location-based rather than goal-based, we're a group with a lot of different goals. This challenge is designed to help us get to know each other and reach our personal goals. Who knows, we might have a lot of the same goals, too! The prize is a hardcover copy of The Spark Solution book! Or, if you already have a copy of the book, I'll send you a special, shiny SparkGoodie.

To participate, in January, post something related to your own health and wellness goal(s). You can post an action you took or are going to take to move yourself closer to your goals (this can be something as simple as a fruit or vegetable you ate or an exercise you are doing, or it can be a more detailed plan of action). You can also post something from your Goal Board Check-In on the SparkPeople Start page.

Each post gets you one entry into a random drawing (1 per day). You can post as often as you like and cheer on others, but you'll only get one entry for each day you post something related to your own goal or journey. You can include as little or much as you like, but you need at least a sentence for the post count. For this challenge, if you miss or skip a day, you can still post about something you did yesterday or a going to do tomorrow, but you will only get an entry for the day of the post.

Here are some examples:
"I tracked my food and exercise today."
"I'm going to go skiing tomorrow."
"SP Goal Motivator: Summer is coming!"
"I ran 2 miles on the treadmill last night."
"SP Short-Term Action Step: Start where you are."
"I ate an apple today."
"SparkPeople Motivator: Get Outside!"
"Long-Term Goal: Maintain my XX-lb weight loss."
"I ate a salad for lunch instead of a hamburger."

Finally, I suggest using your first post to tell us who you are and why you currently use SparkPeople. You can save the specifics for your SparkPage if you like, but include some sort of core reason/motivation for using SparkPeople. Some examples might be: lose weight, maintain weight, train for a marathon, control diabetes, improve blood pressure, learn how to cook, gain weight, learn healthy eating habits... you get the idea. This isn't required to participate, but it will count as one of your daily entries and help us all get to know each other better.

p.s. We also have our monthly mileage challenge running this month. While there isn't a prize for that one (and posts in that thread don't count for this challenge), it can help keep you motivated during these cold winter days. And, you can always mention the exercise you did to achieve your mileage in this thread which would count as your daily entry.
