First, thanks to everyone who participated in this challenge! You all did great and I'll be posting a similar, but shorter, challenge to finish off August.

Smiles_Can_Do and 03bfischer tied for the prize! Luckily, I have a few copies of The Spark Solution, so rather than having them share a book, they'll each get a copy.

Below is a list of how everyone scored. Again, the scores include 10 points for the Intro/Goal post, 0-15 points for participation in the monthly mileage challenges in June/July/August, 0-15 points for Daily Action posts, and 0-15 points for Daily Fruit/Veggie posts. For the runners-up, if you choose to participate in the next August challenge, there will be bonus points awaiting you based on where you placed:

50 MplsKen (10+15+12+13) Exempt from my own prize
43 Smiles_Can_Do (10+10+11+12) Book Winner

Even though I was short on time tonight since we had a dinner party to go to, I went to the gym anyway. My workout was shorter than I planned, but I ran a mile and did some strength training. So, going anyway was my action for the day and I'm glad I did it!

I ate steamed Broccoli with my dinner tonight.

I took the afternoon off from work and took the grandkids to the MN Zoo. What a workout I had carrying either a two year old or a four month old. They love grandma to hold them!! We had a wonderful time!

I had a nice helping of green beans for dinner tonight to help me stay on plan! It was a great day!!

This morning I had a big healthy breakfast with an added cup of fresh blueberries to get through a long work day. I also brought an apple as a snack so I won't have to forage around the office for chocolate this afternoon. Tonight I will also go to workout with some teammates, because doing hard things in a group makes them easier!

Have a great day, everyone!

This evening I took a nice long bike ride through the Minneapolis Chain of Lakes tonight and up into Robbinsdale, I swear that my long rides benefit my mind just as much as they do my legs/body!

I ate a big juicy Peach for my afternoon snack today. Normally, I prefer nectarines, but this peach was pretty good!

Just a reminder that this Challenge ends tomorrow (the 15th) at midnight. The Mileage Challenge continues the rest of the month. And, I'll be posting a similar challenge to this one for the second part of August. Stayed tuned for details!

Thank you KTLUND99! It has been a slow process.

Now that my final is done and I have three weeks before my Fall courses start, I took a moment for a little me time and read a little of a book I haven't gotten to read in 6 wks to support a healthier me.

I ate some strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, and blackberries for a snack tonight.

Today I walked my daughter to her class again today, there's no point in using a car when I just have to go across the street. To pick her up, my son came with, even though he's still sick with some kind of head cold.

I had mixed berries for breakfast this morning.

An excuse is just a challenge to figure out how to do something different.

Sorry to hear about the infection, Brigette, but congratulations on finishing the exam! That takes a lot of determination and perseverance when you're not feeling well.

My action for today is actually the same as Ken's: I do my official SP weigh-in on Wednesday's and thought I had set myself up for a loss with adding running back into my routine and eating so many fruits and veggies, and instead I thought I gained a little. I didn't have a brownie last night to try to get a better number on the scale this morning and told myself I could have it for breakfast this morning. But instead of getting depressed about the number on the scale and feeling like my good efforts weren't getting results so why not just eat the brownie, I had Kashi GoLean Crunch with blueberries instead.

So I will NOT worry about the number on the scale and will continue doing what I need to do for a healthier me. Fewer brownies, more blueberries!

This week has really gone crazy on me. First I found out I had mastoiditis (sp?) (an infection of the ear drum bone) and was put on really strong antibiotics. The antibiotics are really messing with my system and have been really weird feeling, tired, and dizzy. So work outs have been a real struggle.

Then my dog hurt his back and we had to take him to the vet for xrays last night.

And through all this I am trying to finish up a 10 question essay final exam that was due tonight. Ug, I am tired. Yesterday got away from me before I even knew what happened and I did not post :( I realize this probably wont count but I am posting it anyways :)

Monday (late submission)

Even thought I was not feeling great thanks to the antibiotics, I snuck in a little strength training here and there throughout the day to support a healthier me.

I added onions, sweet peppers (red, yellow, and orange), mushrooms, and cucumbers to my spaghetti sauce.

Tuesday (with minutes to spare)

I stayed focused on the task at hand and finished my remaining essay questions for my final exam, this relieved much stress for me to support a healthier me.

I ate asparagus with my dinner tonight.

Have a Sparktastic evening all and goodnight!!! :)

I did a short run and strength trained at the gym today. The bigger action I'm taking today (and yesterday as well) is to not overreact to my weight gain this week (I do my official SP weigh-in on Monday mornings and got back from my vacation Sunday night). It's a mental action, but an important one I've learned during maintenance. I faced a whopping 9 lb gain (actually 10 lbs since Thursday morning when we headed out of town). I know it's mostly water weight, but seeing the actual number makes me want to eat under my range and exercise more than I normally would. However, instead, I'm stepping back and treating this week just like any other: eating and exercising how I normally do for maintenance. I'm sure in a week or two I'll be right back in my normal maintenance range. I just need to keep calm and carry on.

And, I ate Strawberries today!

I was efficient at the gym last night and got my ST in before I had to leave to meet a friend for dinner.

This morning, I don't know what got in to me, but I woke up early, had a banana, and went for a 30 minute run! Then I added blueberries to my breakfast cereal. I feel like a healthier me today!

I had a great weekend! Saturday I ran for an hour, and Sunday I ran for 40 minutes to support a healthier me. I saved half my lunch and added a cup of mixed vegetables to it for dinner Saturday. Sunday, I snacked on blueberries before dinner. We barbecued and I added zucchini and onions to the grill.

This morning, I added blueberries to my cereal and packed my gym clothes to support a healthier me.

I'm back from my short vacation and had a ton of fun! I love, love, love waterparks!

Today I went for a bike ride tonight after we got home. Just a short one, but I wanted to get back into my routine.

I ate a banana during the road trip back home.

We loaded the kids into the bike trailer instead of the car to go out for dinner. Road our bikes to dinner, then road to a park, and then home to support a healthier me.

I had some fresh salsa on my salad for dinner tonight.

Today I had a lot of movement in helping a friend move, which included stairs, lifting and walking down a hallway. I also power shopped at the Mall, taking a quick mile walk around it. Today reminded me why I don't normally hit up the MOA on a weekend.

I had a fresh raspberry, blueberry and blackberry chocolate at Godiva today, at least I hit up fruit in my chocolate!

An excuse is just a challenge to figure out how to do something different.

I went for a jog after work tonight to increase my exercise and living a healthy lifestyle.

Tonight for dinner I had baked salmon with a heap of steamed broccoli. Which by-the-way, if you haven't tried Green Giant Valley Fresh Steamers broccoli flowerets, you should. You cook them in the bag, in the microwave for 5 minutes. It's the best store bought, frozen broccoli I've ever had. No blemishes on the broccoli, not too mushy and not too hard. Good for a quick veggie!!

Today I decided to walk with the kids into town to get shoes and a haircut for the kids, so that provided more walking today in addition to bringing my son up to the school for his final Lego class. Almost 4 miles when all was said and done, plus I'm already over 10,000 steps for the day and it isn't even dinner time yet!

Today I had a colorful salad full of purple beans, ringed beets, yellow tomatoes, lemon cucumbers and a variety of lettuce.

An excuse is just a challenge to figure out how to do something different.

I ate cucumbers and hummus last night with dinner to support a healthier me, and developed a workout plan for the remainder of August that will give me accountability.

This morning I added craisins to my cereal to start the day with some dried fruit and passed on the bagels at work. Bagels will NOT support a healthier me!

On vacation for extended weekend, so I may or may not be checking in the next few days.

I got in a ton of walking (and stairs at the water park) today, none of it specifically tracked for mileage though. My action/step towards my healthy living today was that I used the stairs rather than the elevator every time we went to and from our hotel room (and got the whole family to do the same). Lots of back and forth here, too!

I ate some deliciously prepared asparagus tonight!

I've been walking my son up and back from the high school all week, including today, which have been adding up to more than 2 miles round trip for the two trips. There's no point in making sure I have the car just to go across the street. I also had to do laundry, so my steps have added up to over 10,000 again! Two days in a row!

I had some prunes as a snack today.

I took out the baby carrots as a snack during a family meeting and was happy to see everybody happily munching them! I would have liked to stay longer, but left to go to hockey because more exercise means a happier and healthier me!

For a friend's surprise birthday celebration tonight at another meeting, I suggested party hats to mark the celebration instead of a lot of sugary food. That's a new one for me!

I'm leaving for our family vacation tomorrow, so today I ate the remainder of the fresh fruits and veggies from the fridge to avoid wasting them. I also went shopping tonight for some healthy snacks to bring along for the trip. It won't replace all of my vacation eating for the trip, but it will help mitigate the damage.

I had another one of my favorite salads today Caesar without the croutons and light dressing. I had some cabbage salad with my dinner- same as last night, but I needed to eat up the cabbage- two positives, finish food so it doesn't go bad and eat a healthy meal!!

I ate some Sugar Kiss Melon that my friend brought over this afternoon. I never had one before. I assume it's a type of cantaloupe since that's what it looks like, but quite a bit sweeter and juicier (almost tasted like a mix of cantaloupe and watermelon).

Today I finally got back up to the grocery store and refilled my fridge with healthy fruits and veggies. I'd been missing out on those for a couple of days. When I eat lots of fruits and veggies, I feel better.

Today I has cherries as a snack.

An excuse is just a challenge to figure out how to do something different.

emoticon Everyone!

Today I squeezed in exercise wherever I could, because I knew I wasn't going to have time to get to the gym or go for a walk/ride since I was prepping for our National Night Out block party all day. So, I used the dumbbells I have at home and would do a set of exercises here and there throughout the day. I also had a great time at our NNO event talking with neighbors about our bike trails and about SparkPeople!

I ate a bunch of grapes at tonight's National Night Out potluck/BBQ.

Today I drank 10 cups of water (before 2pm), which I do for overall health and to help maintain my weight. I drink at least 8 cups every day, but I always like when I get in the first 8 by mid-afternoon. I think and feel better when I'm well-hydrated.

I ate grilled sweetcorn today (leftovers from last night's grilling, which I mixed in with blueberries in my oatmeal for lunch).

I pulled my hair up and raced out the door to get my miles in this morning before I went off to ask a friend about a job. The miles are really helping me reduce my weight this month! Back on the losing side!

This morning started out with an apple and dinner had broccoli.

Yes, that definitely qualifies (the granola combination you are making/made today since yesterday/tomorrow stuff doesn't count for this particular challenge).

Today I did 35 minutes of strength training at the gym.

I ate of ton of fruits and veggies today, but my specific one for this post will be Kale. I made it with my scrambled eggs for breakfast.

I'm not sure if this qualifies, but I'm dabbling in getting the right combination of ingredients for home-made granola bars so I know exactly what's in my food. Last night's didn't work out as well as I'd like, but today I'm making a different combination with no oil and more fruit and nuts. Gotta love home-made, from scratch food!

Today I has raspberries for breakfast and corn on the cob for dinner.

An excuse is just a challenge to figure out how to do something different.

Wow! Glad to see the interest in this challenge and that a bunch of you joined in on the mileage challenge as well! Thanks for all of the introductions! A lot of inspiring stories!

Today we had friends over for a BBQ dinner (pizzas on the grill, yum!). For the health interest of everyone involved, we started the night off with a walk around the lake. It was a great night for it! Then, we used the watermelon grill and kebobs I made for our main appetizer. It looked like this:

Blackberries for the charcoal. Except, unlike the photo, the celery wouldn't hold it up in real life....

I ate a ton of fruit today: watermelon, pineapple, strawberries, blueberries, blackberries and kiwi fruit.

Hi I'm Annette, my goal on Sparkpeople is to lose weight for my health, and for a longer life. I am married and we have 8 children from ages 25-4yrs. I WANT to be here to enjoy all of this, I need to keep my weight under control. Since starting here in 2011 I have lost 25 lbs, 4 sizes of pants, and many many inches. I have 70 more lbs to lose, long battle ahead. I would love to have the book, I must say!

Today I ate a turkey burger with no bun, and no salt, instead of the beef burgers that the rest of the family had tonight. I had 2 walks both 2 miles or more.

WOW, everyone is doing great!!

I went out for lunch with some gals today and instead of having my favorite wrap I had a salad so I would stay on plan!! I had blueberries with my breakfast, lettuce and tomatoes with my lunch and fresh chopped tomatoes on top of my omelet for dinner. To meet my exercise goal, I met a friend to jog tonight and arrived 1/2 hour early to get some extra running in before she came.

I had mixed berries for breakfast and the leftover beets and broccolini for lunch as well as an apple as a snack.

Hi everyone! I'm a little late to the party but hope I can still join!

I joined SP a few years ago to find a new tool to help me lose weight after my doctor told me to "try" to get my BMI into the normal range. She wasn't buying my usual excuse that I've always been "big-boned" and couldn't possibly lose that much. I found the tracking and motivational tools I needed and got into the normal range. I trained for and completed two marathons. Then I got a new job, got married, bought a house and the exercise suffered and the weight came back. It's time to recommit!

I'm involved in the Biggest Loser Challenge here on Spark People, which keeps me motivated and accountable. I try to track nutrition every day, even if I have to go back a few days to catch up. I like having the history to see if I can make improvements.

Greetings all: My name is Gail and I have been a sparks member for several years. It has been an interesting journey. At the time I joined I believed the purpose was to loose weight. I was not successful until a few months ago. I suffer from depression and three years ago was diagnosed with RA. In March of this year I discovered the true reason I am part of Sparks. I have decided that I want to live and in order to do so I need to be healthy (or healthier than I was), The weight loss is a side benefit to eating healthy and exercising.

Went for two walks today. One at the office and one after work with my friend. And started my day with a berry smoothie (strawberries, raspberries, pineapple and banana)

Since March my progress has inspired my husband, my sister, one girl friend and her spouse and a second girl friend.

My name is Brenda. I joined SP for motivation and accountability! Even though I'm very sedentary at my job, I'm very active in the evening and weekends, so exercise isn't normally a problem for me. I'm on a plan and I have trouble staying on plan, so I've set goals for myself to stay on plan- 100% with no bites here and there. Yesterday was my first day of staying on plan for a week. If I make it a week, I'll set another goal to go two weeks. My daughter and family are living with us right now until they move into their new house in August, so I have trouble getting in the exercise while they're here. I participated in the July challenge hoping that would get me out more, but eventually didn't record when I knew I wasn't going to make my goal. I'll join the August challenge and lower my goal.

Thanks for the challenge!! This is going to be very motivating!!

I did get out and walk this afternoon, between running around doing chores.

I picked some new veggies out of my big garden today, then proceeded to have them for dinner. Today I had beets for the very first time and broccolini (you may also know them as broccoli raab).

I managed 6 servings of fruits and veggies throughout the day.

An excuse is just a challenge to figure out how to do something different.

Hi! I'm Danelle.
I started out on Spark a year and a half ago with a goal of 80 pounds to lose. I now need to lose the last 25. I am attempting to keep my fruit and veggie count up over 5 each day because when I do, I tend to keep on losing weight and am fuller from the ton of food you can eat when you are full of veggies and fruits. I am attempting to get some miles in this month because I'm part of a facebook group where we're adding up our miles (as a group we got over 30 just today!). I am attempting to incorporate more vegan meals into my diet because of the way corporations treat their livestock and when I do eat meat, I am trying to make sure it's local and humane (this is a recent mindset change, I would never put anyone down for their choices). I have been trying new things lately to see if I like them. You would think so late in this journey, there would be nothing left to learn, but I'm still learning new things daily.

An excuse is just a challenge to figure out how to do something different.

Hi, my name is Brigette. I lost 30+ lbs in 2011 using MyFitnessPal to complete my goal of 60+ lbs. In 2012 I began gaining my weight back and losing motivation. I found SparkPeople and joined to help me lose the 15 lbs and get motivated again. Some things in my life got very rough last Fall and I didn't end up losing, I ended up gaining, 48 lbs. In the last 15 wks I have lost 25 lbs. I love SparkPeople for all the great resources it offers, great support it offers, and all the great people I have meet. I am working to become more mindful, make better food choices, and just live a healthier life. I am not about diets, I am about lifestyle change. And as you said Ken, "The community and health information here keep me mindful of the daily choices I make." Another 23.8 lbs to go :o)

Daily for the fruit/veggie, and for an action item (not to post another reason/goal). So, for example, to match the "eat, live, act healthier" goal, you might post something like "Today I walked 2 miles" or "Today I tracked all of my food", etc. Something that you did intentionally that coincides with the purpose of why you're here. BTW, great job on your July miles; it was a good month!

Carla here.....aka minicooper452.....aka MarineMamaCoop!
Joined to eat, live, act healthier. Staying to continue and because of all of the friends I've made.

So Ken, we come back daily to add another reason why we're here? And the fruit/veggie piece?

OK, I didn't get this challenge posted two months in a row, but here it finally is! It will run from August 1-15. If it goes well, I'll do another for the second half of August.

Since this team is location-based rather than goal-based, we're a group with a lot of different goals. This challenge is designed to help us get to know each other and reach our personal goals. Who knows, we might have a lot of the same goals, too! The prize is a hardcover copy of the new Spark Solution book!

To join, make a post in this thread telling us why you currently use SparkPeople. You can save the specifics for your SparkPage if you like, but include some sort of core reason/motivation. Some examples might be: lose weight, maintain weight, train for a marathon, control diabetes, improve blood pressure, learn how to cook, gain weight, learn healthy eating habits... you get the idea. You get 10 points for this intro/goal post.

Then, every day, post an action you took to move toward your stated goal.

You get 1 point for each day you post an action. You can post as many actions as you like and cheer on others, but you only get 1 point for each day you post an action. You can include as little or much as you like, but you need at least a sentence to count. For this challenge, you also don't get points for yesterday's actions or things you think you will do tomorrow. The idea is to act today and post it.

Additionally, you can get 1 bonus point each day if you mention a specific fruit or vegetable you ate that day. This can be in a separate post or the same post as your action (although it doesn't count as your daily action). Again, you can do this as much as you like, but you only get 1 bonus point for each day you post a fruit/veggie consumed. An example would be "I ate an apple today."

Finally, if you participate in the mileage challenge, you also get bonus points (5 points for each month you participated). I'm counting June, July and August since I gave hints about this challenge in the mileage posts since June. If you missed June and July, you can still participate in August!!! Let's get moving, it will get you some bonus points and help you feel awesome, too!

I'll pop in from time to time to cheer you on!
