CAPECODBABE thanks for the suggestion. I will try the peanut butter substitution and see how it turns out. I love hummus.

I know this is an old post...

I have a recipe that says if you don't have tahini, you can substitute natural peanut butter. I did and it was good.

Somewhere I have a simple recipe for making your own tahini... but can't find it tonight.
I'll be back when I do.

I love hummus also and have been looking for a good recipe. After months of searching for Tahini I finally found it in a local health food store. So please lets us know when you put the recipe up in SparkRecipes.com.

Yeah, Tahini will last a little while. This recipe (without any preservatives) will last you 5-7 days (but don't worry you will gobble it up before then!). Depending on the price of the Tahini, it may be a little more than store-bought, but it tastes so much better and is better for you. But I hear you on having to be careful on the money front!

I love hummus and have wanted to make it, but the price of the tahini is a lot when you only use a little amount. I think I will ask my sister if she would want to go in on a jar of it. I have to watch what I spend right now.

Oops I see it is 1/4 cup, I though other recipes used tablespoons....that may make a difference. Obviously I haven't made it yet and clearly haven't looked at the recipes! LOL!!

I didn't even know about that tool until you said something--thanks. There's so many resources on this site, I am still discovering them!

(From American Cancer Society)

Ingredients:
1/4 cup tahini (sesame paste)
1 teaspoon cumin or more to taste
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 large cloves garlic, finely chopped
3 tablespoons lemon juice
3 tablespoons hot water
1 19-ounce can garbanzo beans, drained
Chopped fresh parsley

Combine tahini, cumin, salt, and garlic in a small bowl. While mixing, slowly pour in lemon juice, then hot water. Purée garbanzo beans in a blender or a food processor, or pass through a food mill. Add tahini mixture to purée and process or mix well. Season to taste. Sprinkle with chopped parsley and serve with fresh vegetables or toasted pita bread. Makes 1 1/2 cups.

NOTE: I KNOW IT'S WEIRD, BUT THEY DID NOT "FORGET" TO MENTION OLIVE OIL. THIS RECIPE REALLY DOESN'T NEED IT. I ALSO THROW IN SOME CRUSHED RED PEPPER, TONS OF PARSLEY, BLACK PEPPER, ROASTED RED PEPPER, DILL, OR WHATEVER ELSE I HAVE ON HAND THAT SOUNDS GOOD. JUST THROW IT IN THE TAHINI SAUCE BEFORE YOU ADD THE WHOLE THING TO THE BLENDER/FOOD PROCESSOR. ENJOY!
