BILLTHOMSON - I think that we ALL allow stress to enter our lives.
The difference lies in how we deal with it.
I think that you are managing it just fine !

I learned that stress reduction needs to be ongoing, not just when you are relaxed and have the time to do the techniques you have chosen. Every so often, you need to check in for a tune up. I need to continue to work on my rigid and negative thinking which contributes to and creates unnecessary stress in my life.

This challenge helped me see that I can do things to combat my stress that work for me. The journaling stress and then journaling gratitude helped to put some things in perspective. It is all a work in progress but I have some tools now.

This challenge was a reinforcement of the idea of taking baby steps. I haven't become a stress-free, Zen blob of goodness/happiness in 4 weeks, but I'm definitely handling the craziness of my life better.

I'm going to try the "lather, rinse, repeat" approach with this challenge and keep up the journaling, etc. in hopes of ever getting closer to where I'd love to be.

I have learned sometimes you have to stop, close your eyes, take a deep breath, and think "I can do this" "This too will pass" "I can't change other people's attitudes, only the way I respond to them!"

And I'm in Ohio in the snow, but we have some sunshine today so it's cheery. Stress can easily become overwhelming if it gets out of hand. Having stress relieving techniques and ways to find calm is an asset and one of those priceless commodities. It makes life more enjoyable to know that if/when stress finds you, you know what to do to relieve it or to nip it in the bud. Singing in the garden is one way, but it always helps to have more ideas in your arsenal. Good luck and keep sparking!

I enjoyed reading your post this morning (I'm in Seattle). You sound like a strong person and can conquer anything that gets in your way. Enjoy your massages - that is something I would like to do on an ongoing basis. I think that goes a long way to aid in our mobility issues as we get older.

This challenge has been very helpful for me. It has let me see how much I already did to alleviate the stress I live with and given me some very useful tools that I hadn't thought about before. My long term goal for stress management is to keep using these techniques and to periodically review the tips in the calendar in the resources section. I also want to continue to find ways to take events that I perceive as stressful and transform those events into stress relieving episodes instead.

For example, I was sitting here at my computer the other day when I noticed the sun has now slipped so low on the horizon that it peeks in the window beside me and glares into my face, making it difficult to see my monitor for several minutes each morning. This will happen for the next 6 to 8 weeks, until the sun goes up higher in the horizon and leaves me alone until next December. Normally I grouse and grumble, don a baseball cap, hold my hand like a blinder, or get up away from the computer until the sun has passed my window. This year I've found a video on youtube of sunrise at my favorite beach and when the sun starts to bother me I play that video, turn my chair towards the sun, close my eyes and enjoy a few moments of imaginary sunbathing. Perhaps by the time the sun doesn't bother me I'll just move my chair to the window on purpose. I'm really not much of a meditator (or a sunbather) but I've enjoyed my imaginary sunbathing quite a bit!

Other goals are to continue being kind to myself and continue massages, easily the most expensive thing I've ever spent on myself in my entire life but so worth it! I also want to spend more time replying to others on the message boards, they say the easiest way to feel better about yourself is to connect with others and I really think that's true. I've been spending most of my time here working on my own issues and I think that's very necessary at the moment but it won't stay that way so that's another goal for me. Thanks for reading, I've really appreciated the opportunity to participate in this challenge.

Jeanne

Your soul is rooting for you.
