Bad reading choice... The final chapters of a thriller and I ended up with the kind of dreams best avoided.

Tonight I'll go back to reviewing the day, planning for tomorrow and reading something light or funny if I need to.

Oh my goodness, so week 1 didn't really do much for me, but last night I had some hot tea before bed (Tazo:Lotus) and had the best night of sleep I've had since I can remember! Mind you, not a perfect night of sleep, but I woke up/tossed and turned a lot less! It's so hard for me to make a good bedtime, as my husband stays up till about 11:30 every night and pouts when I want to go to bed earlier.. Haha, so I pretend to fall asleep on him and drool on his shirt in rebellion. Hee hee :P

Made a priority to clear my bed and try to make it every night so that it was more inviting to sleep in. I did manage to go to be between 10:30-11:00 on workdays (except yesturday) and I went to bed not later then 11:30 on Saturday and Sunday! And I woke up no later then 9 on the weekend. Not drinking or eatting an hour before bed def helps.

I am planning to download a relaxing music/sounds for my ipod. I also want to keep pushing to go to bed at 10:30.

I'm still working on getting to bed at a decent time 3 nights a week. I'm conscious of it now so maybe that will help. Would love to be able to get up and exercise. Will attempt to do this!

I have been doing alot better at getting to bed on time but the sleep part is not working out. I have a mother that needs help throughout the night so i am getting up around midnigh and then again usually around 2:30am. But after being up for about 15 minutes each time i am right back to sleep. I am waking up tired in the morning but with the 30 minute being taken out of my nights I am getting 7.5-8 hours of sleep a night.

Week 2 seemed to go well. I had one bad night (Sat/Sun) but that was due to company staying late and from having some extra (half) glasses of wine on Saturday night which threw off my routine. Had a good night's sleep interrupted last night by my husband's loud snoring and restless legs, so I went downstairs to the futon and went right back to sleep. In the past I have tried to get him to stop snoring, or have laid awake until I pass out from exhaustion. But I'm going to leave the room rather than lose sleep. Overall, I noticed that the nights I exercised, I slept better. I also noticed that the nights when my sleep was interrupted (hubby or worries) I was tired and very cranky the next day.

Not sure what has been going on with me. I have had 10-12 hours sleep a day for over a week.

I have chosen these ideas:
1. Create the right environment.
2. Get yourself into a routine
3. Limit food and beverage intake before bed.
4. Consider a natural approach.

I did this by setting a midnight bed time, lights off time of 12:30am, 15-30 minutes reading time after I go to bed, a 9am wake up alarm,

I will have a cup of Sweet Dreams hot tea at 10pm.
No food after 9pm.
Also am trying to exercise daily again.

DH usually has the tv going, but by the time I go to bed, he is asleep, so I turn it off.

This week has actually been much better for me...I'm averaging about 7-8.5 hours of sleep a night, and I'm sleeping through the night better than I was. I think it's a combination of carefully watching my pre-bedtime snacking, putting together a nightly routine which de-stresses me, and exercising more. I still have some bad nights, but the only one in the last two weeks was the night before I had to give a big presentation...perfectly understandable why I might be a little more stressed than usual!

My second week on this challenge... well, I didn't manage to actually change anything. Between helping people move and social engagements and hockey games...

I did get on average more sleep this week than the previous, but my weekend sleeping habits are still atrocious (think Saturday when I fell asleep at 530pm only to wake up at 930pm and then stay awake until 4:30am on Sunday...)

I don't generally nap and I try to stay away from caffeine.

I'm working on exercising more. I haven't been very good lately about getting myself to the gym.

I fell asleep rather quickly last night, but yet again I was awake 2-3 times last night running to the bathroom. Ugh! Even though I stopped drinking anything a few hours before bedtime. With that when I finally did get up for the day, I didnt feel very rested. Hoping for better night tonight.

BAH! I am so frustrated. I am still putting off going to bed until the last possible second. Like a little kid testing to see just how bad I can be without it negatively effecting me.

I have started reading at bedtime which does help me fall asleep.

I have to be up for 5am during the week and I keep staying up until midnight and then I get anxiety that I will oversleep so I spend all night watching the clock.

I am hesitant about moving on to week 2. I guess I am a little afraid to fail at this because this is such an old habit and I really like staying up late.

Any suggestions?!

I have been trying to do these tasks, but it seems they don't help much. I may need to go to bed even earlier than I have anticipated. Also, trying to drink 8 cups a day does not help with sleep. In fact, it makes me sleep less, what with the constant interruptions to get to the potty. Urgh.

Nothing but good results since I've joined this challenge. Exercise, not eating after supper, no tv in bedroom, and no computer before bedtime have all helped consistently in getting much need sleep. Looking forward to week three.

I'm at the point where 6/7 days I usually fall asleep within 15 minutes of lying down, so that's a positive. The negative is sticking to a routine and getting to bed consistently at the same time. It's really hard for me as my husband works second shift and always wakes me up when he gets home if I'm sleeping. Sometimes I even wait up for him just to see him. GRRR!

so far so good... getting at least 7 hours of sleep a night, and depriving myself of anything that I enjoy doing at night, such as time with the boyfriends, movies, our favorite TV shows, and so on. One day everything will be completely in order and my ideal day will go as planned! Now to push for that 8 hour benchmark!

ok ok...it is still very difficult to go to sleep. Somehow I fight leaving the cozy recliner and crawling into bed. Once I do, I go right to sleep, the problem is getting my body to go to bed. Not sure why I fight it so much. Thats my homework for this week to set a time and leave the recliner and get into bed. That way I can put myself on a schedule.

I have been getting to bed at the same time every night now for the past week or so. I had a couple of not so good nights of sleep and I really think it had to do with the intense pain in my right knee, which is gone now thanks to the Doctor. The last couple of nights have been awesome I managed to get 6.5 hours last night. Which is really amazing I have to keep a sleep journal for my sleep Doctor and in looking back I have not got that much sleep in like 8+ years. emoticon Looking for ward to week 3 challenges. End of week 2. I did good at getting to bed on time each night although I'll need to keep an eye on this as I have been tending to stretch it out a couple of extra minutes each night. I struggled yesterday & today with getting up at the same time as I do during the workweek, but based on feeling tired at bedtime last night I need to do it no matter how much I dislike it.

On to week 3...

Original SW on 1/1/11 - 204.4 lbs.
Original GW on 9/1/11 - 134.5 lbs
Original GOAL ACHIEVED! 70 lbs. banished!

Time zone: EST

New SW on 1/1/19 - 204, back to the very beginning
New GW by 12/31/20 - 135

well, tis the end of week two and things are getting better in some ways.
I am still struggling getting to bed at the same time, but am getting up at the same time each day.
I have a glass of milk before bedtime and it helps me to sleep. Trying to stay away from the sugar and caffeine in the evenings. It is helping.
I am also starting a new exercise routine and hope I can keep it up.
Still would like to clean up the bedroom a bit to make it a more serene and calm atmosphere.
Ready to take on week three!

Well this whole sleep thing has gone a lot better than I thought it would. It's amazing how it all got started because over the winter break from college I got into the worst habits I have been in for awhile. I was staying up until 3 or 4 am and then waking up to my alarm about 7:30 am to do my workouts and get going for the day. Whoa was I exhausted all day, every day! For some reason I just could not convince myself to go to bed early every night because I really enjoyed the time alone in the house, but after moving back up to college I was so exhausted my first night after my move that I fell asleep at 10:30 pm and that's where the change all began. I am now a student teacher and I get up at 5:40 am every morning Monday-Friday to do my 30 minute workout, take my shower, get ready, eat breakfast and get to the school by 7:30 every morning. Being so busy all day wipes me out and now I never go to bed later than 10:30 and my usual time is about 10:20. My goal for now is to get down to being in bed at 10:00! Wish me luck! I hope all of you are doing well!

I just have not been doing well at this. I can't seem to go to bed at the same time every night, but I have started going to bed with my hubby instead of staying up when I'm not tired. But getting up is an issue. I'll get up early one day but sleep in the next....

I am doing well in getting up at the same time each day. I still need to find a good time to get to bed and stick with it. I have found watching what I eat in the evening helps. No caffeine or sugar is a must. A glass of milk before bed is helping me fall asleep faster. Getting close to 8 hours of sleep a night.
Now I need to start that exercise routine and get my bedroom cleaned up.

I have found a routine and been trying to stick to it as best I can. I also avoid caffeine after 5pm but drink an herbal chamomile and mint tea before bed every night. It is actually part of my routine. Hopefully it works and I can stick with it.

I didn't sleep as well as I have been, I think because I wasn't able to get out of the house to go to the gym and do my normal routine (heavy snowstorm.) I was able to go this afternoon, so I'm hoping I sleep much better tonight!

Week one went off without a hitch, but this week has been a different story. I had trouble getting to sleep at night over the weekend and then I haven't been able to get to bed before midnight like I would like to. Exercise has been a no show for me. Cannot seem to get started on it.

I started sleeping better in week 1 just by not eating after 8pm and getting to bed at the same time every night. Unfortunately, my exercise routine went by the wayside because of several crazy days (ER visit with Mom, Jury Duty, etc). The last few nights haven't been so good. I intend to restart my daily 30 minute walks and start writing in my journal again before bed. Both are great stress reducers.

This week went pretty well. Exercise definitely helps me sleep, and as long as I don't do it too close to bedtime, I don't have any problems. I would like to get up before work and exercise, rather than do it when I get home, but I am still feeling completely drained in the morning, despite getting a good 7-8 hours of sleep.

Startiing week 2...
I'm beginning to get close to 8 hours of sleep a night. My average seems to be about 7 1/2. I am getting up each day at about the same time and getting to bed before midnight. Now I would like to start working on a slightly earlier bedtime.

I am going to try and clean up my bedroom this week.
It is a mess and gives a not so calm effect when I head for bed. That will be the easy part...keeping it that way will be a challenge.
I am also going to monitor my evening snacks and stay away from the sugar and salt as they affect my sleep. A glass of milk and some toast usually does well for me.
I also need to start on a regular exercise routine as well. Not sure exactly how that is going to play out. I got sidetracked a couple of months ago.
These seem like a lot for one week, but we'll see how some slight changes will help.

I read the article on exercise. As I reflect on my past practices, when I'm vacation I have a harder time falling asleep. Partly, because I don't maintain my routines & partly because I'm not as active. I'm going to work on that!

Im managing to go to bed on time, but not always staying asleep. Im going to add "no eating after 7" and "no Napping" to my goals for this week. I think that will make a big difference. Im already noticing a difference from exercise.

Except for new years eve I managed to get my 8 hours of sleep. I feel a little bit more energetic, but I don't know why there isn't much more improvement. Guess it takes time.

Okay, I think I chose the wrong time to start this challenge. Week one went great, then week 2 hit during the week of school concerts and the height of Holiday Prep. My whole cycle has been thrown off for the past 3 weeks. So I am recomitting myself to week 2 this week. I will go to bed by 10:30 3-4 nights this week and Wake by 7 3 days. I'll get in 30-60 minutes of exercise 3 days this week and eat a healthy snack 30 minutes before bedtime.

So far I have only been to bed by 11pm since starting this challenge once. I see how I am a passive partner in my sleep process and so will now be ensuring a couple of things. No Sparking right before bed - getting it in early in the day. I get too enmeshed and the time travels! And I am setting my desired bedtime to be 11:30am - it's more realistic and I may attain some success with it thus wanting to try 11 later on.

I love the idea of progressive muscle relaxation and deep breathing so will try adding one or the other of these into my routine at bedtime.
