I'm looking forward to this challange. I figure I need to drink 12 glasses per day. Thats 372 glasses Holy Cow. I'm curious.. What about exercising? Do we then add more water on top of the regular amount we are to be drinking? I could be floating all day.

I will challenge myself to the 8 glasses a day. Yesterday I had 7. I have added lemon, cucumber, mint and ginger to my water to help me drink it better. Thank goodness I don't drink soda, I'd really have a hard go of it! emoticon

Norns3: no wonder I feel better at 12 + cups water per day! I weigh 214 pounds. That's 107 ounces divided by 8 ounce cups or 13 and 3/8 cups!

March 1= 9 cups
3/2 = 10

and way to go on your nursing partnership emoticon my daughter and I are on 28 months.

sooo...if I weigh 242 lbs, I should be drinking 484 oz of water a day? 2oz per lb?? Obviously, that is not right, what am I missing?

well, not that i want to be the fly in the ointment but it's 1/2oz [corrected] per lb of bodyweight - not by glasses - and recent research is now saying it doesn't need to be that much, going by thirst is perfectly adequate.

of course, there's other research that contradicts that, so who knows. all i know is, if i don't take in a lot of fluids throughout the day, i can't unstick my tongue from the roof of my mouth in the morning and my throat feels like i've gargled with half the sahara.

i am not in a position to drink water, however - i live in the middle of the bush and have no running water except the river out back. i bucket my water in from town and it still has to be boiled - if you dislike drinking water, trust me - boiled water is YARGH. so flat and tasteless and yucky.

so i drink tea - lots and lots of tea of many kinds.

my "teacup" is a 750ml (3 cups) novelty vase shaped like a giant coffee cup with goofy wilting and bleary-eyed on one side holding out a trembling hand for a coffeecup and on the other he's zippy-wide-eyed and raring to go. it was handmade in canada, so lead's probably not an issue. i just keep sipping at it like i used to sip at my pop bottle (more on that later) and before i know it, the cup's empty and i have to get a refill.

i go through through six or seven cups a day - black tea with milk, peppermint tea (straight), ruibos tea (which i really don't like but is very healthy), blackcurrant tea (straight), and various celestial seasonings blends. my favourite is a PMS blend called "a soothing cup of peace and quiet" which i think of as "a soothing cup of st[beep!]u" (just sayin', because believe me, if i'm drinking it, it's what others in my family are thinking i should do!).

if you have a rough time getting water down, this is a trick i learned back when i was working out hardcore (bodybuilding before i got into powerlifting before i got pregnant and ended up toxemic on strict bed rest): i noticed i couldn't choke down even a gulp of water but i had no problem downing an entire 2l bottle of pop. ergo, i started with lemon-flavoured mineral water - poplike mouthfeel, all those healthy minerals for building and maintaining strong and healthy bones, teeth, and neurons, and a nice lemony or lime-y kick.

[about caffeine: *normally* you want to keep it below 300mg a day, half that if you're pregnant or breastfeeding littles - i, however, managed to get myself well and truly hooked: when i found out i was pregnant, i was taking in 3000mg (yes, three *grams*!) a day just to keep functioning. i have cut it back because i'm still breastfeeding (she'll be 3 on the 16th) but i can't eliminate it completely because the headaches are staggering and the mood swings are not an option with a toddler around the house]


oh yeah - one other thing: it's far more effective to take in a couple ounces at a time, rather than an entire glass in one go. your body will only use what it needs at this time - the rest gets peed out. if you just keep a constant stream of sips going (using sports bottles with straws works a treat, too), then it doesn't get in the way of your routine and the bottle is empty before you know it. your body gets maximum use of water and it helps cut back on the toilet trips.

This is one of the few things that comes easily to me. I drink almost exclusively water, with an occasional unsweetened iced tea in the mix. I carry a 32 oz container around with me at work and in no time, I have met my goal. If only everything were that easy. :)

Boy, do I nees this challenge. Water is the most difficult thing for me to get in on a regular basis. I'm not drinking other things with the exception of my morning (this takes me half the day), I just forget to drink at all.

I am in. I also have trouble getting in my 8 glasses a day. I am up for the challange. I work 8+ hours a day, and if I can drink 1 bottle of water every 2 hours, I will have made it by the end of my work day. I two will see you in the bathroom.
