This my first paragraph.

Tom sat in his cell, after being captured, and remembered the affair he had. He had asked her to wait for him. He was going to ask her to marry him when he got out of the service. They were going to meet at the tower, but he never made it. He looked at her picture with him and her and wondered if he had a child.

Here's my first paragraph:

Rob Upshaw’s list of aspired-to accomplishments had never included larceny. Recovering the Romanov jewels, sure. Finding Excalibur and meeting King Arthur, definitely. Being guilted into tracking down an unknown treasure lost by his great-great-great uncle and stealing it from its current owners? Not so much.

I think I rewrote the beginning about ... nine times before being happy with it. Mostly because I didn't know where to start the story.

Yes, the beginning is important. I started out with the boy looking for his father and the father telling the story of his lost love. I think it was a lot easier 40 years ago when you could submit to all publishers with no agents. I may go the route of publishers too seeing as agents take too long. They did say if I had an offer when submitting, to let them know and they would read my submission quickly.

Yeah, I realize I'm fortunate that I can spend money on these things. It's an easy way to bypass the slushpile (if you're a finalist), but it also gets you three critiques of your beginning pages. And we all know how important those beginning pages are!

I can't see spending money to enter the contest. I have other things I need to spend money on.
When you get to my age and no money coming in anymore, there are a lot of things you can't do.

I remember, years ago, I sent money for a record to be made with an unknown singer. When I got the record the singer could not even carry a note. I learned fast.

I have been trying to find singers to send my songs too but I think I might have to find another publisher first. I do have the rights back.

Yes, you got it right. I am finding in the gen fic they just want query about you and a brief story of the novel before they ask for any pages.

Okay, I get it! Because your story has a romance storyline, you're querying agents that represent both fiction and the romance genre. Yes?

I would say general fiction.

I am sending it to agents with romance and fiction, and woman fiction. I know it is not completely romanced so I can not send it to the ones that only do romance only. I think it is fiction but not sure what kind. What do you think from my query?

Yes, I know it does not fall into the romance category. I am trying some romance and other avenues.
This is my query:

Another Lifetime is a story about a woman who fell in love with a soldier, on leave in Paris, for two weeks. He told her to wait for him. They made a date to meet at the tower in two years, but he never showed up. She didn't know he was captured. When he was released he tried to find her. He never found her until his son found him, and told him his mother was dead.

He married the secretary from his office when he gave up hope of finding his lost love. They had a daughter. The daughter who was going to school nights for her Masters, met her half brother, a professor, never knowing he was her half brother.

When Denise tells her girlfriend Jean about the handsome professor Jean wants to be fixed up with him. Jean tells Denise she likes Brad so she should fix her up with the professor. Denise talks to the professor and he takes her girlfriend Jean out. They find they have a lot in common.

Denise is falling in love with Brad, a client she is working for. Brad had a bad relationship and gave up on having another love interest. Denise has other ideas. She is falling in love with him. Through the story, Brad starts to fall for Denise.

In the story, Denise's father finds out he has a son who came looking for him. When Denise's mother died her father left home and never left her a note. She had been looking for him and never found him. She finds him when Dennis takes her apple picking and she goes to meet his father. She then recognizes under that beard and old age is her lost father and a half
brother she never knew growing up.

Your story has a romance. Based on what you've described, your story does not fit the romance genre.

Here's mine:

Wendy Marsh has to put her hotel management career on hold when she inherits half of her family’s plantation-turned Inn. Her to-do list is simple: Uphold tradition, teach her beautiful but manipulative cousin how to manage Fountenoy Hall, and then hightail it back to her structured, careful life in Atlanta. Sentimentality and romance aren’t part of the plan, after always remaining unnoticed in her cousin’s shadow – so what is it about her guest, a history professor with a sexy smile and intent eyes, that tempts her to stay?

(Goal: Teach her cousin how to run the Inn.
Motivation: So the Inn can stay within the family and Wendy can return to her job.
Conflict: Her cousin doesn't pay attention, and Wendy has the hots for a guest.)

Rob Upshaw would be enjoying his time at the Inn at Fountenoy Hall if he wasn’t covertly hunting for a treasure lost by his many-times great uncle during the Prohibition era. Only a few minor inconveniences stand in way of Rob finding it. Like his uncle’s old, cryptic journals, a vague description of what was lost, and the uptight innkeeper with a subtle sense of humor who might hold the answers to his quest. Even though Rob’s career is built on facts, he accepts he might have to lie to Wendy. But falling for her? That’s out of the question.

(Goal: Find the treasure
Motivation: To return it to his family
Conflict: he has no idea what he's looking for)

Moonshine and Magnolias, a passionate and playful single title romance, is complete at 81,000 words. This story is a 2017 Sheila (Valley Forge Romance Writers) winner for contemporary romance.

Romance is with his sister and the client she is working with. Complications arise because he had a bad relationship and his bride married his best man, so he does not want to enter into another with Denise. Denise has also had a bad relationship and tries to tell him she is willing to try if he is. When they finally get further along and he asks her to marry him she does not want to move to NY, so another conflict. But story end with her getting a transfer from her job there.

The half brother Denise fixes up with her friend and they have a relation ship. So there is romance in the story.

Usually in romance, it follows two (or three, depending on the type ;) characters through the story from their meeting, to the relationship developing and circumstances pulling them apart, to the major conflict, and then the resolution. Romance plays a major role in the story.

From what I've seen, your story, while it has a romantic element, is more literary. The boy searching for his father is not a romance, neither is his half-sister getting her Master's. Their meeting is not romantic, since they're related. Romance does not drive your story.

I had to re submit to an agent because now they are using query tracker. They will send the page to respond to. I hate that. I have been trying to send out one or two each day. Some do not list romance but contemporary or romance suspense or women fiction, so make it hard to check the one mine is. I think I am adult romance, which I saw on one of the agents but then when filling in the darn query tracker thing it doesn't say that.

Woot woot, I'm a finalist in the last contest I entered. Now my pages get sent to the agent final judge along with the other four finalists.

Out of 100, my judges gave me 90, 91, and 97. sweeeeeeeeeeeet.
Some had Ideas that didn't fit for my MS, but one of them caught extra spaces and missing words. Yay. I get to polish up the pages before sending it on.

...am I writing what from work? Being on Spark? Yes. Taking a quick break.

I have Google Alerts set for my name (Abigail Sharpe) and my book names (Who Wants to Marry a Cowboy and Who Wants to Marry a Doctor) so I get notices when they're on pirated sites. Annoying, but most of those sites will download malware onto your computer if you use them, so to that I say ha ha.

I don't think that is a good idea. Once on line who is going to buy it if they can read it free?
They could send it to their friends. I know sometimes, a friend buys a book and then passes it along to others.I did that, after I kept the book for a while someone sent me. If the book is autographed you might keep it, but it would not be worth anything till that person was a famous writer, and chances are nil. So then you just keep it as a friend.

Are you writing from work? If you are be careful you do not get caught.

On my first book I sent out copies to some friends that send copies of their books to me.
I told my friends I can't be paying for books to send to all of you, as they cost me. Sometimes, you have to know where to put your foot down. I can't understand why they wanted you to pay as I always got it free.

I just got an email from a place called new authors books, so I deleted it as I did not write to them.

There's another romance contest where the final judges are two editors from major houses and an agent. I'm like, sign me up! I think the deadline is in June.

Well, two cuts because she had to go in one week and then go back in the next week, but I consider myself lucky because they caught it at the beginning. My sil had both breasts out and others put in and so did my friend. The hospital has a survivor party for everyone in June and give us a party of sandwiches, coffee, cake, ice cream, cho fountain, samples of different things. They also have the doctors and nurses put on a show.

Good for you on the contest. Way to go.

One cut? I should be so lucky. ;) (I think my total scar count is five, including the port and reconstruction.)

I don't know if I mentioned I entered a contest recently. I got my scores back last week.
Out of 285 points, one judge gave me a 275, the next a 264, and the third a 166. Talk about subjective! The lowest score is dropped, but my other scores still weren't high enough to final. Oh, well.

Sometimes, it is hard to put it behind you when you shower and see the cut from the breast.
But, you have to get over it. It can burn your insides thinking of it coming back. I had two friends who had it, one like me and another had both breast out and put back in. I wrote about a woman who had cancer of the blood and the doc gave her 4 months to live. He told her to go home and put her life in order. Well, she fooled them, she made it and then l8 months later she got lung cancer and made it again, and died by a fall. It was a sad story to write as she explained what she went through, but a happy ending for the cancer, at least. i enjoy writing non fiction better as you come in contact with live people and their experiences.

Yeah, I don't think I can talk about my experience in 800 words. I could pick a segment, but I'm kinda done with it, you know?

I am so sorry you had it so bad. Mine was not as bad as yours. They caught it with the mammogram, not the GYN. He felt nothing. I remember the nurse calling me over into a room.
I knew then something was up. She said I needed a biopsy, there was something there that could be cancer. Well, trying to hold back water works, as you know was hard to do. After the biopsy it was confirmed, I had breast cancer. I was lucky it was just starting and it was in the duck, but I had two operations, one after another and then radiation for 32 days.

But you didn't write it as a story for Woman World? Maybe you should have. But then again, how much can you say with 800 words. I am still working on my cancer book.

Did you write about the cancer? What was the story about? Some magazines are hard to get into. They want so much. I used to write for Industry Magazine and the Skyze. I had never heard of the Skyze before. I got l50 for each page for Industry Magazine and 50.00 for Skyze and 50 for newspapers. Made a l000 a year freelancing. So it does pay.

Heh - it was based on something that happened to me. :) I wish I knew if the woman took the chance and told the guy her feelings.

To mean it sounded like they wanted things that happened to a woman in real life. I think you can write it in first person too. I might try it, but right now I haven't been writing. My hands are hurting with the arthritis.

Been there, got rejected from that. :)

Also, I want to finish my novel. So that means the novel is my main focus. Writing a complete story in 1000 isn't as easy as it sounds.
