That is what I do because sometimes, I add something in and then if I put in chapters I have to go and change them all. So, like you, I do it when editing.

I don't set up chapters, but I set up scene breaks. Then when I go back and edit, I set up the chapters at roughly 5K words.

I know the feeling. When editing I find I need to either expand the chapter or lesson it.

I try to write by chapters just for organization purposes. It helps and is easy to do in scrivener, the software I use. However, I'm not always great at telling when it needs to be a new chapter so things get moved around some in edits.

The one I sent to Avon Impluse is 80,000 or over a bit. The one I got published was 50,000.
The new one I have no idea yet as I am just in a few pages.

Do you set up your chapters as you write or when you edit? Some times, I set them up first and other times later.

Depends on the genre and age range really. Middle grade can still be around 50,000 though some of the fantasy ones are going to be more around 70k or so. An established author can also get away with stories over 120,000 while a first time one may struggle to sell that except for sometimes with epic fantasy. I read a middle grade book that was longer than some epic fantasy novels but the author had well selling series before that series came along.

I've seen some romance imprints and such allow for as short as 50,000 but a good portion of the time that will be too short, even for young adult nowadays. Many young adult are in the 70-100k range for first books with others later on going much longer depending on genre and story.

The one I plan to submit is around 70k. One I need to edit/rewrite is just under 180k and needs divided into two books because that's too long. Both are YA speculative fiction.

I think some I have seen are about 50,000, and run maybe about 300 to 400 pages. The longer ones run 500 or better.

My contract for a contemporary romance novel was 90,000.
(and literally 90K... though my agent said *around* was fine - so it could be 90,001. ;)

Book lengths

80,000 89,999: Totally cool
90,000 99,999: Generally safe
70,000 79,999: Might be too short; probably all right
100,000 109,999: Might be too long; probably all right
Below 70,000: Too short
110,000 or above Too long

There are all numbers of pages a publisher wants. Problem is you have to find a publisher that is looking for the number you wrote.

How long do you write your books? Have you written smaller ones?
