I still haven't heard anything yet? I have changed things around and sent out the second round. Must be 3 months ago, so waiting for a few to answer. Some do and some do not.
My first book started with excitement in the first chapter and it was published. So we will see.
I have also sent a query to Catholic Digest a few days ago.

Trying to find a health mag that is dealing with losing weight. Most of them are dealing with using weights.

So if the editor doesn't like stories where the hero and heroine get together in the first chapter, then all she needs is that chapter. Maybe she doesn't like the dialogue that was written. Or the sentence structure. Or word choice. Or what she sees of the plot.

This is in the first chapter.

She didn't want him to leave and asked him if he wanted to come in for a drink, which he accepted. She filled his wine glass and they continued to talk. After several drinks, they kissed and he carried her to the bedroom. He asked her if this was what she wanted. She knew he was going to be shipped out. She answered yes because she wanted him to make love to her. He spent the night and when it was morning she got up and made him breakfast.

Tell me - have you ever read a book and one chapter in, you're like - this isn't for me? Yeah, they can definitely tell with one chapter. If the good stuff happens in chapter 4, move it to chapter 1.

Sometimes it's the subject matter or the writing style, even if the story is good. If they don't LOVE a story, that's it. Subjective, subjective, subjective.

I sent it out with the Avon Impluse so will see what they say. Maybe they will not want it. Fingers crossed. Never heard from the others which only asked for one chapter. How can you tell with one chapter. I need to read more to find out if I like a book.

I took an informal poll on my Facebook page a while ago and about half the responders said they skip over prologues. I don't.

From what I've read in advice from agents, editors and published authors, most of the time a prologue is not needed. I have written a few over the years but usually they get cut out in the second draft. There are specific times when it works well to have a prologue. There are some readers, though that skip them so if it's not important to the story then might as well just not have it there. You want to hook the reader with whatever is the first pages they will read.
