The problem was the area where both USB sections on the laptop were located was the faulty section that needed replaced. I did have a hub actually, though iPod chord was not a fan of it so had to be direct to laptop. However, I got my laptop fixed so I'm back in business. Only thing I need on occasion is the mouse because Mac laptops don't do left click. hehe

I'm going to be ready for NaNoWriMo. In 2 weeks we start prepping.

Elf,
Try moving the keyboard to a different USB port. If that helps you can get a USB multi-tap or hub for $10 if you need that port for other things.

Wow, I type upwards of 50wpm. Of course, that's only beneficial if I know what I'm going to say.

To answer the question in general, it depends on the story and the draft. Some novels I can do drafts in just a month, others take years. Finished from start to edited, years but I don't work on it all that time because I'm working on other things often.

I type faster than my computer but in part because my computer needs fixed so it's slower with the connected keyboard as the usb spot is part of the problem areas that need fixed.

If I type 15 WPM I'm doing good. Last test I took it was 11. In high school my best test was -5, on a manual typewriter.

That's interesting, Sly. I type faster than I write, so my fingers often outrun my brain.

It took me five years to get Cowboy how I wanted it, but 11 months for Doctor. I learned a lot over those first five years - plus I had a deadline for Doctor, which definitely speeds up your writing process. My current WIP has taken about 1.5 years so far, but not writing every day (and then breaks for other things as well.) My next one will be faster because it's a trilogy and I'm getting to know the characters as I do the first one.

A small tape recorder is always a good thing to have in your pocket. I always used to use one. Now, I run to the typewriter as I can still type 80 words a min, but the computer sometimes can not keep up with me. LoL

Never worked on a novel before. But I cannot start on the computer. My brain outruns my fingers. If I get lost in my thoughts, I may lose my words. I pencil, scratch and scribble then rewrite & edit on PC.

Why does it come to at the oddest times of the day or night? I need something handy for notes to keep the thought or it's gone.

I do have several ideas started and still have ideas come that are just notes.

When starting a novel do the words flow on to the computer? Do you hesitate and stop for lack of words? Do you edit and edit and edit? Why does this happen? Do you ever ask yourself?

I can be sitting down and all of a sudden I have to go to the computer because a story is unwinding and I need to get it down on quick before I forget my thoughts. Does this happen to you?

Then after my thoughts are down my memory stops and I am lost as to where to go from there so I stop and wait for another day. Sometimes, nothing will happen. That is another reason why some writers have more than one story started. This way they can go look at each story and sometimes something will come to mind to add to it.

What are your thoughts on this subject?
