I decided to reread my novel and a good thing because I made some changes. Seems after you put it away and read it, you start to think as you read it and find you want to add something here or take something out there.

So who is writing, who is getting published? We would like to hear about you. Some are probably not writing anymore and have stopped, others too busy with work. At one time this board was roaring with writers and information going back and forth. Do you think it can happen again?

WIP = work in progress. I usually use my laptop, but sometimes I use the desktop. With DropBox, I don't have to save the story to anything in order to get it onto the new computer. It's already in DropBox, so I just have to sign in on the desktop.

Time stamps I didn't know about. That is good. I was thinking of finshed stories to store on line. A lot of good information for writers

Eh, I suppose they could but there isn't much worth to an unfinished, not edited or polished story that is currently online. There is always going to be a threat of someone taking or getting ahold of something, no matter what. But with the amount of stuff out there in general, the chances are pretty minimal, let alone them being able to do much with it or being able to win in the case of a copyright charge. The good part about a lot of the online options is they also have timestamps and provide ways to prove ownership of said item and when it was created.

Elf thanks for the explanation. What about hackers going in and stealing your stories?
I imagine they can go anywhere.

All that is good infromation for writers. I could have used it when I was your age and writing a lot, but now it is a hobby and I don't write as much as I did before, so I use the CDRW to save my stuff.

The computer has its own hard drive, but you can purchase a backup, also known as an external hard drive. That extra hard drive will usually connect to your computer using a USB cord. It is external, so just a backup system that can hold pretty much everything on the computer. When I got my new Mac after the old when fizzled out (after many many years) I was able to not only have all documents and such, but programs as well saved to the external hard drive so it could be added to the new computer.

You can share things with other people online with dropbox if you choose to do so (I show pictures to my friends online through it, for example), but there are specific settings and steps for such. Most of the time it is just accessible to you.

I also save some of my writing on Writing.com, which is a site I help moderate. You can decide whether to have stories visible to others for reviews or you can keep them private so only you can see them. There are quite a few options available for ensuring you don't lose your work if the computer stops working.

I am not too familiar with all the stuff you do and don't know too much about computers, but enough to get me by. So you are saying if your computer breaks down you can still get to your stuff from a new one and it does not get lost? If it is in Cyberland doesn't that mean others can obtain access to it? Never heard of DropBox or WIP. I only use the MW for my writing and put them on disc.

When you say all my stuff, what do you mean? My pictures are on the cloud and I have an external hard drive for most everything. The stuff that changes (like my WIP) is in DropBox or I email it to myself (so it waits in CyberLand if I ever need it).

Backup, backup, backup!!

Abby what happens to all your stuff if the computer goes down? I like the CDRW because I can put it away somewhere and always have it no matter what happens. Today, the computers are changing so much. I used to be able to use the floppy but now I can't use them anymore with this machine and all my floppies I can not get into, unless I can find an old machine somewhere that still has one. I don't know why they took that off. I understand they also have something like Flash, or something like that.

Darlene, the memory stick is a good idea. My laptop doesn't have a CD drive, so that's what I use.

I also email my files to myself.

There's a free program called DropBox that you can use, too. You upload your files there and can access them from any computer that also has DropBox installed.

Darlene it might have something to do with XP and windows not covering it.

Try the memory stick and see how you like it. I always use the CDRW. I get it at Staples.

Camey, I was thinking about this last night. One of my dh's friends gave me a thing called a stick or it maybe called a memory stick. I was thinking I should put the story on there.

I don't have Norton anymore. I was having so much trouble with it, it wasn't worth continuing calling Norton and having techs work on this computer. I have a free thing now and it's doing better than Norton 360 did for me. I know Norton is good so maybe there was a problem in this computer.

I appreciate all the help you gave me!!

Darlene you should always save it on a disc in case something happens to the computer.

Keep an eye on your Norton and watch the dates because you will have to renew it when the time comes, otherwise, you will have no coverage.

I'm not sure, but I think with my story on paper, I may see it differently than I do on the screen.

I also plan on using colored pencils to circle things I want to save for our kids in another place, such as the end of the story.

These "things" will be helpful things I've learned (but don't always practice).

Darlene it depends with your machine. If you have window 7 then you go to save to and then send to and dvd. Then look up above and it will say burn. When you want to look at it and putit on again you just put it on save to and dvd and it should open.

If you have XP I think you go to save to and then dvd and it should tell you what to do.

Darlene, once I write the story and edit it online, I print it out and edit it on paper. Then I have to transpose everything, but I find more things when I look at it on a different medium.

Camey, I'm writing new. That's about all that's going on in my writing world.

Thanks Camey!!! I'll look for one of those! That sounds great. I've used a lot of paper already so that would save on buying more ink, and of course the paper!

Does this CDRW disc tell you how to copy things onto it?

Darlene to save on your ink, use a CDRW disc and copy your story on it. You can insert the disc on any computer, no matter where you go. Lots of places, in hotels, have computers you can use and there are libraries everywhere. This way you can use the disc to edit your story and save on the price of ink until you are ready for the final print.

I've printed most of my story on paper and I am planning on taking it with me when we go to Arizona. I'm thinking I may be better able to edit it with it on paper. I still have many, many pages to print.
