That was what I figured but it seems some publishers don't follow the rules for them.

Right - and those sound contemporary. But not westerns.

I don't remember the publisher as it was on a list of publishers I was looking at.

I sent my novel out again and haven't heard anything yet.

I am working on one where the wife cheats and get preg. My first published book was about a town that was cheating. I have a few others started.

Geez, what publisher? That's extremely narrow-minded. :)

I'm writing one about three friends who own a bed and breakfast. In Georgia.
I'm also writing one about a group of friends that takes place in an unnamed northern location but is sort of inspired by New York.

Abby I read where contemporaries are mostly ranches and families, sort of like western stories. It was on one of the publishers list listed that way.

I write contemporaries as well.

When folks ask me what that means, I say It takes place on earth, in this time period, and without vampires. :)

I have done that too. Mostly, I write novels not about anyone just thoughts that come into my head and a lot of reading helps.

I write in the present too. I had doing research so I try to keep my novel where I am familiar with all surroundings.

Do you write in the present? If you write in the past depends on how far back you go to try and remember unless you do research. Take the events and sequence and place them on a separate page, then refer to them. I try to think of what I want to say and save it, Then I think of where it is going to be and save it. Like piece work.

I have trouble with the time/events/sequence. Any ideas or is there another thread I can read to help me with that?

I just started another story and I have just put down thoughts here and there and they are not in the right order. Later I will go back and copy and paste. Sometimes, when writing I think of another avenue then the one I had and just put it down. Then I will used the one I like best.

The Another Lifetime, I sent the query out but it took a lot of editing. I just put it aside and then read it about 3 months later and found mistakes, a word here and there left out. So easy when typing fast to skip them. Well, here is hoping they ask to read it.

Each time your redo your plot it gets better. Keep in touch with your writing. Like to know how you are doing.

Thanks! I want to check out Scrivener.

Word is fine for the finished product, but it's all the rest I'm struggling with. World building, character development; I have dozens of support docs to juggle. So far OneNote works, but I keep hearing about more specific writing tools. So I'll checking out Scrivener and a bunch of other packages.

Thanks!

I've heard that OneNote and Evernote are similar but more geared towards notes. I know some like one more than the other but I've tried neither of them.

Honestly, I use Word to make documents for submission because most take rtf or doc, but when it comes to writer I like to use Scrivener. It allows folders for organizing, has sections for character sheets and world building, and you can keep several drafts all within one saved file. I can make notes on spots for editing and is linked with the dictionary on my laptop so I can look up a word for definition or synonyms easily. There are many things it can do I don't even know about yet cause I didn't do the tutorial. I even have one for short stories written in 2014, each genre has a folder and that's much easier to find the different stories than it was in just a word document, having to scroll all the way down. I can see where the story is because it has it's own page thing, but it's still saved as a single item overall on the computer. I also got a discount on it for completing NaNoWriMo several years ago.

So, I like Scrivener but that's just my take. ;-)

I have always used microsoft word and had no problem. I can copy and paste from one page to another. When I send out my ms the publisher wants word so it makes it easier for me.
At least the ones I send to. Looking for one now that novel is finished.

Hi,

I'm wondering what software you're using for your writing.

I've been using Word and OneNote, but I'm not totally satisfied.
I like the formatting features of Word, but it doesn't transfer easily back and forth between a PC and an iPad.

I like the layers of pages in OneNote, but the formatting is limited.

Are the [novel] writing packages really worth it?

Thanks!
