Making editing progress again. I am working on chapters 1-5 and hope to have them done in the next week or so. Fixed last names, teachers and other minor things today. Next is to work on the descriptions a bit to make them show more.

Luckily it's just on minor things. As I was writing, I started off with the math teacher as female and later on in the book, the math teacher is male. It's an easy enough fix. I have the edit outlined, I just need to get started but am more focused on the other novel first draft. I'm almost to my word count goal for the month, plus I only have today off this week. Next day off is monday. Maybe on one of the days I work a little less, I can start doing some editing.

I've done that. I've assigned roles to characters and when it came time to write those roles, I gave them to *different* characters. Blech.

I found where I had said she left Paris to have her son born in USA and then in another place how he was going to school in Paris, so I corrected it. It is so hard not to do stuff like that as your mind wanders and you sometimes forget what you put on one page when doing another similar about the same person.

I've been putting together notes in preparation of the final edit. They are more what to focus on in the different sections of the novel in particular in a specific order. I divided the novel in 5 sections since there are 25 chapters. This will be different but I'm looking forward to getting to work on the final edit.

Finished the minor edit. I'll take a few days off, maybe a week, then get the last fixes done. Getting closer to having it ready for submission.

Working on the final major edit notes and it's proving interesting. This recent edit was just to fix the minor errors like typos and tense mistakes, but this final edit will be closer to a rewrite in that I have to add more descriptions and show more emotion.

I use index cards to keep track of what was in each chapter for each draft of the novel. So, I did a set of cards per each chapter that has notes on what emotions he experiences in that chapter, senses experienced (hearing, taste, etc), and on the other side of the card, the locations and what could be described a little bit as don't want to go overboard on description. It's taking some time to get the notes for all 25 chapters, but I think it will be useful in the final edit. After that, I should just need a quick skim, a query letter and then it's submission time.

Slow but steady. You'll get there.

I finished the minor edit on chapter 11. I have 10 chapters to do for the minor one. Then I'll have to do a different type of edit, but can see the end nearing in the distance.

...come to think of it, I sold it at 88K, but it boosted up to about 92K with the changes my editor had me make.

And I did check with my agent that 90K didn't mean *exactly* 90K.

My contract said 90K words for a romance novel. That's not to say they won't buy one at 80K, but you may have to add stuff to it.

I already crossed it off my list. Once I finish typing I will go over it again and see what can be cut out and not lose interest in the story. Today, another 85 day and we didn't put ac on so not too comfortable typing. Maybe tomorrow I will type some more. Figure going to take at least a month or a little more to retype.

I checked out the link you had posted on the other forum post. Yeah, no word count posted and honestly, that is a red flag to me. Just looking at the web site, I think you're better off not going with them anyways. I would never submit to them based on the appearance of the site. There are too many things that cause red flags on the different pages. I wouldn't change anything based on the one comment, as the general novel length standard is around 75,000 words, give or take. Only cut it down shorter if you think it makes the novel better.

Thanks.

Though, it depends on the publisher. Make sure to check the guidelines because there are some who don't consider 50,000 words a novel. Some consider it as a long novella, while others see that length as a novel but rather short. Also, genre will vary on word length requirements. For fantasy it'd be a little short, for example, but there are some genres that prefer shorter, so it will vary.

Elf I like your method. I have 30 thousand words. I figure with 2000 a day, in 25 days I should have it typed. Then I want to go over it and copy the whole thing on a new page. The reason is, I want to see what I can cut out, so when sending it out again, I can say, I have it in 50 words or 80 words, depending on the length they work with. I always thought they were looking for 80,000 words, but I think they are now going with the smaller word count of 50,000.

Thanks.

I'm working on notes for each chapter. I've done this for each draft so I know roughly what each chapter is about. I just use note cards. From there, I'm going to divide it up to groups and figure out the emotions and descriptions needed for each one. Sounds like a good start at least.

That's the fun of getting to a different stage in the process; trying to find a method that will work for me.

Have you ever had two strong feelings going on at the same time? You can talk about how that feels without using the word feel....such as he was very disturbed or confused because he was very angry and terribly sad at the same time.

Just a thought from someone who really doesn't know much about writing.

Except I have had more than one feeling at the same time and it's tough!!

I'm not sure cause I do that in some of the story. It's trying to find the balance and different ways to go about it so it's not all the same. And more senses need used.

maybe it's a matter of figurative language? Instead of "he felt sad," do something else like... um... the headache that started as a dull thump roared to life with the news. I dunno. But you know what I mean.

Thanks. It's amazing what some stuff does get published, I'll admit. It's great for them but some books needed another draft or two it seems before going to the public.

I also need to add a bit more of the emotion back in it. I had some but it was all told using the word "feel" or "felt" so I cut all those out in rewrite. But then the readers both said it needed to show his emotions more. I think after this minor backwards editing I'm going to divide the novel into sections and figure out where to add the emotions and senses.

Glad I'm not the only one. And it will probably increase a little more before I submit to agents but that's because I need to pick a few spots to add a little description. Not paragraphs worth, just small spots to use the senses to better show the scenes.

No. I'm not going for any specific amount. I wasn't planning on it getting any longer. It just happens to be increasing a little bit as I edit. It's a young teen novel so it's okay to be a little shorter.

Funny part is so far, even though I do delete things, my novel gets a little longer with each edit. Last time I went from 50k to 67k. I've only edited 5 chapters doing the backwards thing but the novel is now over 68k long. Not a whole lot longer but still managed to add 1,000 words by editing.

It always amazes me how often my copy editor finds that I've skipped a word in a sentence - like the, a, an.

Right, it's not plot or anything. Just spelling, grammar, tense, etc.

Though on occasion a sentence won't make sense without knowing something that came before it so I have to scan up to make sure it's right and not a typo.

Helps to go backwards cause you can look at each sentence on its own instead of already knowing the context. Helps to catch some of the minor errors that are easier to miss the regular way cause you know what is supposed to be there and your mind might read it that way and skip a typo.

Wow, backwards? I don't know if I can do that. I'd think I was forgetting something.
OH - you're not focusing on plot, are you? Just grammar and sentence structure? I might be able to handle that.

I'm just doing minor details right now, not fixing whether the scene is needed in the story or not. Checking for typos, tense mistakes and stuff like that. Have edited chapters 25-22. Just have 21 more to go, since doing it from the very end backwards sentence by sentence to the very beginning of the story. Fun times.

Hope to have it done in the next month or so.

I heard an audio message recently that helped me with editing. You may know this already but it was new to me. As I go over my writing I need to ask myself two questions. Does this show what the story is about, and the other is, does this show whose story it is.

I wouldn't say never. Folks have their own processes, and what works for you might not work for someone else. And vice versa.

Editing can be fun if you put your story away and go back to it in a month. You will enjoy reading it as it will be fresh in your mind. Putting it away for a month you will be able to find mistakes in grammar, spelling, or the way you wrote the sentence. Never keep editing while you are writing as you lose your thoughts and forget what you wanted to add. Why do you have trouble editing?

Edited a short story today. It gained a couple hundred words but overall not too bad. Since I edited it before the contest on writing.com, not too many errors to fix. Will give it another pass over before I submit it to a speculative fiction publisher later on this week. They have a fast turn out for rejection so should know a day or two after I submit.

I can see your point Abby.

I've been given a challenge and I am going to do my best to take it on! One of my problems is, once I get on the internet, I stay there much too long and than end up regretting the time spent in Facebook or in reading and answering e-mails. PLUS I get upset with myself for not writing!
The challenge is for me to stay off the internet for the first week in January. I have already made one exception. A friend of mine here on Sparks writes a daily message in a group I'm in and I've been posting the message on Facebook. It's inspirational and helpful and lots of people have "liked" it. I intend to continue posting those messages.
I hope to get some writing done with this extra time!! Lord willing, I'll be back on the 8th of January.
Thank you all for the help you've given me!! I'm sure I'll need lots more, so don't go away!! love, Darlene

Darlene, I've done that before, too. It's a good feeling, though, that you've written something and you're not cringing because of it.

Abby, I think this particular lady will be honest but I will tell her not to hold back in letting me know my mistakes.

Elf, reading what you've written backwards really makes good sense.

I have often found myself reading what I've written and that's not editing or writing!! Nothing gets done doing that!

That is very nice. :-)

I'm waiting on 3 readers still to give me feedback on my novel but right now I'm going through it backwards, looking at once sentence at a time to try and catch the small errors. Like I found a spot near the very end that has a period and it should be a question mark. This way I'm not looking at the content of the paragraph or what I know is in the chapter, just looking at it sentence by sentence, and only doing a tiny bit at a time amongst other things.

Darlene, make sure you tell your friend to be honest! So many folks don't want to hurt your feelings if they find something that doesn't make sense to them.

I found someone to help me Elf!! There's a lady at our church who has edited magazines. She told me she'd be glad to edit my story.

I can see how easy it would be to run over a misspelled word. I have many times! Reading out loud is a good idea. Knowing me, I'd edit before giving something to this lady to edit. Just like my mother said, if she ever had a cleaning lady, she'd have to clean house first. love, Darlene

Too funny that you mention this, Elf. I just finished my copy edits, and the editor flagged so many instances where I left out words or left out letters - like writing his instead of this. I can't tell you how many times I read the manuscript and never caught that. Ha!

Also, it's hard to see some of the flaws in our own work. That's why first you have to take a break from the item because you know it, you wrote it. Sometimes the mind will fill in words that aren't there are skim over misspelled items cause it will insert the right word for the sentence as we read through.

Take a break.
Read it out loud.
Read it backwards to look at it word by word.
Or find someone to help.

:-)
