Well I am glad I decided to reconstruct the novel as it sounds a lot better now than before with some stuff left out. I switched some chapters too and put them up front so the story starts with interest asap. Working on l8 hopefully today.

I should have that done before NaNoWriMo even gets here.

And technically, the one for NaNoWriMo is one I already have started. I've had the story idea longer than any of the others. And I've written just over 50k so far.

OR, Elf, instead of doing NaNo, you could finish the one you've already started! *grin*

Another one:

Also from a NaNoWriMo attempt, I have the one from 2010 which was an epic fantasy. I wrote 50,000 words on it last year in 15 days but then stalled. Part of it was I still hadn't much experience in writing and finishing drafts. Another reason had to with the larger scope and pov because I'm used to one or maybe two main characters whose pov we are in even though it's third person. While I don't want to head hop, I also need to do different points of view throughout the story, even if two elves are the main pov ones. The final issue is, world building. It's not our world as it's an epic fantasy with elves, dwarves and such. While I have some general ideas in my head, I really need to have down somewhere important bits about the world of the story as a whole.

So, before NaNoWriMo this year, when I make the second attempt at book 1 of the series, I'm going to world build. I have notebooks and will do them by hand but I'm looking forward to trying out something different.

Which I think is useful when something is stalled. Try something different.

Ah, the dreaded sagging middle.

Usually when that happens to me, I realize it's because I don't have enough conflict to sustain the story.

When I find my ms is not going anywhere, I read it over and try to find the reason why.
Sometimes, it could be too complicated with two many characters, making it hard for the reader to digest the story. Other times, it could be too much discription, which is necessary, at times, but I skip over it, still it is needed. Some writers fill up the book with it. Maybe the characters do not seem real to the reader. Maybe you have stalled on a subject too long and it gets boring. So many reasons. What do you do when your ms is not moving?

Yes, I do. SNI (as in shiny new idea) is bad... I've even done a couple blog posts about it. But also... I just don't know which novel will sell first. Since I have so many options it's hard to pick one and be like "this is the one."

Elf that was a great explanation for beginners who probably have a problem with that.
Thanks.

Guess I can answer this one too. Depends on the reason it's stalled.

A good number of stories I write scenes or get a few chapters on end up stalled but not out of disinterest or even issues with what is written. The stall comes from distraction. I have so many going but can only work on so much at once time. I'll see a shiny idea and go wondering off instead of finishing what I was working on. For that, I just find the time to continue writing where I left off.

Other times, there is a story issue and first I have to evaluate what is wrong before I can decide. On the first nanowrimo attempt it just wasn't working, so the decision came to abandon the story. It was a first attempt at going for novel length and helped me get on my way but it's never going to be written. Plus it wasn't very original to begin with so it's better off left as little scenes where I worked on my writing skills but not much else.

NaNoWriMo 2011 I wrote 99k romance that I finished. However, I also got over 25k done in a young adult novel that stalled. I like the idea but something felt off. It took me a while before all of my distractions but since then, I have figured out the problem. I tried writing the main character like the one from the mutant series: withdrawn, loner with no friends. That does not work for the story. It might have been okay for the romance, but for the bigger picture and for the character, it just wasn't right. So, I have to go back and rewrite what I have so far, changing the main character to fit more what he needs to be like and what the story needs. Think I'm going to do a blog post on re-starting in the near future too.

And another one, if I just get stuck and don't know what to put but know a little more about what comes a bit later on, then I will write a note and skip it. In the first draft of the mutant one, I knew after he got in trouble something had to happen, but had no idea what. So I just made a few notes and left it at that to fix in the rewrite.

Those are some of the things I do. :-)

If my MS has stalled, I skip over the stalled scene and continue writing. When I do my edits, I go back and evaluate the scene. Usually it gets cut.
