I haven't read many of Brandon Mull's books so far. I started reading this series as I got an advanced copy of book 1, Beyonders. It's a little different because they changed a character's name in the final revisions but since I read that book a while ago it's not all that noticeable. Though they are quite intense epic fantasy for middle grade. He has the previous successful series, which gives him more room in these and they are pretty good.

Would help if I didn't have only less than 30 minutes at a time to read. Tend to use lunch break at work as I don't eat much and the reception isn't good in the break room so can't mess around on the cell phones. At least can get a little reading done some days.

Some books I read I skip over a lot and some get too confusing with too many stories going at the same time.

I loved the Dakota Series with Debbie McComber. I like Diane Palmer too and Fran Michael.
Sometimes, I might read a James Patterson, or Kootz. I am really not a mystery fan, mostly romantic or western. I have read a book, Not without my daughter, which is a movie too, and that was a good one.

Elf thanks for bring this back. Always good to find out what someone read in case we want to read it ourselves.

I think my kids may have read those. I know they read the Fairhaven books.

I just finished a Nora Roberts standalone - The Witness. The relationship moved too fast, but other than that, it was really good.

I'm going to bump this topic up to the top. I am trying to get reading again and it's good to read if wanting to write. For fall I'm trying to read both a fiction and a nonfiction book.

Fiction book is Seeds of Rebellion, which is book 2 in a middle grade series. Nonfiction book is called Antimatter and that's the topic of it.

My gf sent me her recipe. I haven't made it yet. I bought the yeast. I think the pizza one calls for sugar, but the bread doesn't. It is a plain recipe for bread so you can add anything to it.

It takes time, which I don't have, so have to wait till I am going to be home all day to make it.
Lately, seems I have places I have to go to, or things need taken care of outside the house.
But one of these days I will get to it. Probably when school is out and my gs come to sleep over. I am teaching him to cook. I taught the gd, but need to teach her more when she comes. He cleans my windows for me and I give him something for it. He also cuts the grass but dh pays him. We don't have to but we want to. He never asks, nor her. She cleans my frig when she comes. He also vacuums for me, so if he comes once a week like he said he is then he can clean my house all summer. Now, that would be wonderful. But he does no know how to wash floors, have to show him. He did do the bathroom. Then winter comes and they go back to school. At ages l3 for him and l6 for her will not have them much longer it seems as already they have their friends and are not always available when I want them.

I think a lot of the process foods cause cancer. I guess you could include a lot of foods that have greens in them. Otherwise, not sure what type you would add in the book.

Mine is When Cancer hits. I have several articles published in the newspaper on cancer.

I have been cancer free for 3 years now and my dil was hit the same time as me. Now, this year two friends got hit with it, all breast. I am now baking instead of buying stuff as I notice a lot have soy and it has estrogen which causes cancer in women. Pitter Bread, (pocket bread) is free of it. I am going to make my own bread and pizza dough too. I have been baking cookies and will make the muffins. I think they taste better home made anyway.

So good to add what not to eat too. A lot of research for a book but I think it will sell.

Funny you should mention cancer, because I decided to publish my cancer blog in book form. But you know what I have on the cover? A well-muscled male torso. Because there are enough books out there with serious covers, right? It's titled "What's Next?" and then something like, My Life With Breast Cancer, One Blog Post at a Time.

I go by the Titles but love to see a picture.

I think if the words are powerful a person would pick it up. Like, for example, The Day I found out I had cancer. My cancer book. I would not put a picture of someone having cancer on the cover. Mostly romance is kissing on the cover or some sort of romance showing. I have no idea what Another Lifetime would be, maybe a soldier and a girl because he has an affair while in the service, but then he never finds her to marry her because he was a prisoner of war and she left Paris. So he marries another and has a son he knows nothing about until he finds him. His daughter goes to night school for her masters and her half brother is her substitute teacher for the night but she does not know it, nor he. So hard to figure a cover.

I had some marketing done but I did a lot myself as well. It was definitely a learning experience.

You *could* use words instead of a picture, but be honest - how often do you judge a book by its cover? A lot, right? Would you pick up a book that had only words on the cover?

No, you have to pay for it yourself. I never used a software before to make a book. Can you just use words instead of a cover picture? There is a girl on the 70 board I am on that has her books done with them. She sent me the site. Still, it is a on demand book. They put it on Amazon and sell but if you want books you have to pay for them. I didn't want to go that route, even though traditional give you some and others you pay for, but they do all the marketing for you. Well, they did, not sure now.

I get my insurance through work and just have the cheapest one as I can't afford much.

Back on topic: I brought a book in to work to start reading on my lunch breaks called Geist by Phillipa Ballentine. It's a supernatural type of fantasy fiction, so will be interesting.

Check out Humana. They are on the net. They even send someone to your house if you need help cleaning, grocery shopping, etc.

When I went for my back she started me out on the squart, then the high stretch and the overhead one, For the shoulders, I did mostly the pull stretches. When I did the leg ones it was the bike and a weight on foot and you pull it up and down.

Most of the trainers do try to get you to hire them, which would mean meeting with them several times and that usually costs hundreds of dollars. But what you get with full on training sessions is way different than what they do for free at the gym. The free sessions are more of an introduction to the gym, show you around, give a couple pointers and help with form on lifting or show how machines work if only interested in cardio. This helps limit the number of people who get hurt in their facility.

Personal sessions, however, include workout programs created by the trainer for the individual. It will vary based on their clients personal needs, include some extras to help with any weaker areas that may be noticed, and be very specific. He showed me the bench press and how to squat, for example, but he couldn't tell me which exercise to do in what order because that's part of the point in paid training sessions. The specifics and details that go in individualized programming. Some will also work on food and work towards specific goals like lowering body fat percentage by a certain amount in the weeks they train a person. So, it's a bit different for what an actual train session involves and just checking and suggesting how to do a lift with better form.

I need to look into insurance stuff some day. I know some people have insurance that helps give them a decent price for gyms and they can use many different ones, so they have lots of options. Doubt mine has that but maybe one day.

The gym provides a free session with the trainer when you first join. But the second time was a female trainer and she did a free session too because I needed help learning form on deadlift and the initial trainer hadn't gotten to that one. They don't want people doing lifts at random and hurting themselves so she was nice enough to help me. If I need to learn something knew, or just need my form checked for a short time, I could probably ask one for a little help.

I read New Rules of Lifting for Women. It's different, since it's focused on trying to dispel the notion that women shouldn't lift heavy weights or they might get too big. However, coming to it from already knowing those factors was a little different, so some of the humor and comments didn't really catch me. It has a good section showing how to do different types of moves, so that will be useful.

Finished reading the middle grade book. The ending was way weird and not quite what I thought the story about trying to save a pet baboon would lead to but it was okay overall.

Now I'm reading Hex Hall on my nook.

I used to hoard my books, but now I have so many that I regularly get rid of them. It's nice to pass them on to someone you know will appreciate them.

I'm reading Life By Life by Kate Atkinson. It's so freaky weird - it's like Groundhog Day, only she's unaware of what's happening, and it resets to different points in her life, not the same day over and over.

I am reading Nora Roberts Angels Fall and I can't put it down. This girl was a cook in a Boston restaurant and someone came into the restaurant and killed everyone and she was also short and just laid there and left for dead. When the police found her and took her to the hospital she lived but ended up in mental care for a while. Then once she was better she decided to leave Boston and ended up in a town where she was a short order cook, but she was well experienced in cooking as she learned in Paris. She became friends with the owner.
She decided to take a hike on her day off and she witnessed a man killing a woman but it was too far away for her to recognize the people involved. She tells the law but even tho they go out to investigate they think because of what happened to her in Boston she is imagining it all in her head.

I need to get back into reading. I stared reading a middle grade book about a girl in ancient Egypt who will have to go on an adventure to save her pet baboon. I'm not very far but need to read it so I can return the book to the library.

1000 calories worked for me, but now I just watch what I eat. Seeing as I can no longer do wights with my arms and shoulders, with spurs and arthritis, and only once in a while bike because of spasms, I have to watch my food more closely.

Well, I think that depends on a few things because some people don't necessarily eat a lot and you don't want to eat too little. There are many factors that go into play. Some of the book rambles about topics already heard in other places, like what calories are and such, but I'm more interested in how they take familiar recipes and change them to be healthier.

Good luck with it. I never worked with mysteries or puzzel stories. Mostly romance or children, poetry, songs. Maybe someday, as a fill in, might try it.

I'm working on a mystery in which the detective operates, unwillingly, between two eras: the mid-1950's and the present. When he stumbles into the present he has all the technology at his fingertips, but, he doesn't understand how to use it, so he has to learn quickly before he finds himself back in his familiar world of the 50's without the technology. He has to solve a problem/crime in his present with what he learned in our present.
At least that's the WIP idea.

If you are looking for some sites on writing check back on some of the later posts on the writing section. From time to time, I have put sites there for writers.

I was reading a series where there was a cop in all of them. I don't remember the name of the series.

'The Blue Girl (a short story of Scotland Yard) by Grecian
'Creating Short Fiction' by Knight

I'm about half-way through both books. I like the premise of Grecian's book; a rookie Bobby who just wants to keep his job, minimal ambition, finds himself the only person who can investigate a murder. Throw in a few eccentric minor characters, and so far an entertaining story.
Knight's book is the classic, I see it often referred to as the 'bible', of how to write short fiction. I found it referenced in three of my other how-to books on short story writing. Knight is strictly a no nonsense, bare bones how to book. If you need all the glib, sophomoric buzz words, and 'modern' writing formulas, Knight's book is not for you.

Finished reading Chosen. It ended on a cliff hanger for the sequel but I won't be reading it. While it got actiony near the end, I struggled to care from the beginning, so it was a story that just wasn't for me.

Finished Forever Friends, which was strange. The book was all about letters they wrote to each others, telling the story.

Now reading With Hope, which is about a girl who's mother had sex with all the men in the county and her husband, who did not believe in divorce, stayed married. She sent her children to him to take care of. When he died her half sister came and was a lot of trouble as she started chasing after a cousin l0 years older and he was accomodating her. He half brother straightened out and stayed with her. Somewhere, in the story, someone will try to take her farm away from her. It is good. Dorothy Garlock author she is good.

Still reading the same books. I'm almost done with Chosen but I don't care for it much. The idea has potential but I can't connect with the characters enough and just struggle to keep reading. Haven't gotten very far on the android book. Spent less time trying to read this month compared to the last couple.

Slowly reading the 2 books. The android one is a bit weird, not sure how I feel yet as the first chapter doesn't quite make me care what goes on but the premise is a little interesting. Chosen is a bit odd cause the guy is kinda a jerk so far and makes it hard cause his point of view is half of the time. But I'll keep reading and see what happens.

I've had the book for a while but haven't read it yet. Never saw the movie.

I started reading a book on my Nook last night called Chosen by Denise Swank. It's different. So far a lot of action going on and the one guy is questionable. He'll have to redeem himself later in the story, I can tell.

I've decided not to read "and Falling, Fly" because it just doesn't interest me. It was hard to get through the first 44 pages and I don't have the desire to read any more.

Instead, think I will start reading Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep. It's a classic sci-fi book.

Finished reading Black Wood. It was definitely middle grade (though people list it as young adult on goodreads). I like the idea but overall, the book wasn't the best written. It stumbled through the plot with random decisions and mess ups that complicate things for the main character. It seemed to me it needed more developed. And it ended on a cliffhanger, so didn't really feel completed. I don't think I'll be looking for the sequel.

Now to get back to the angel/vampire story I am already not interested in and have almost 300 pages left to read.

Just finished The Monuments Men. Really interesting. And now I want to go to Austria and visit the salt mines.

There was a really nice circle to the story as one of the Monuments Men at the end of the war had just been Bar Mitvahed in Germany before the war started. I won't spoil his ending in case anyone reads it.
