I had to make a lot of changes in my first novel that was published and it hurt. I felt like my story was not mine anymore.

My editor stressed that she suggests changes, but whether I make them is up to me. However, her suggestions were spot on. Plus I learned a lot with what she said.

I do not like the rewrites but that comes with the novels when you get published. I never understand why they do not print it just how you wrote it then it is not your book anymore.

Oh well, I guess they seem to think it will sell better with their advice. After dh is better I will start another novel but take my time, or maybe go back to the dog one. I am working on sending out children one now.

that may be true, but since I want to write novels, doing freelance articles would take away from my novel-writing time. Balance and priorities! :)

I finished the chapter. One more chapter to go and then it's time to present new stuff to the group. I also started judging a contest entry (30 pgs of an unpubbed MS). It's... all over the place.

Today I'm gonna finish reading the critiques of my chapter. Unless I don't.

I'm still trying to decide how to read my story again. I think maybe on my Kindle, but with my laptop open so I can immediate fix any mistakes. It will be annoying, but I think it will be for the best.

Elf I have written a lot of poems. I might put them in a book I wrote songs and that is too which are a lot like some poems.

Abby, I had that happen to me when I sent it to Wings. Then I had to read it all over again.

I haven't sent it out again yet as been sick with some virus and was home for Easter but sent DH and he came home with pastry. Said all the food was gone when the woman went to pack me some.

I don't think I've ever willingly wrote a poem. :)

Manie, thankfully I haven't read through this story in a while. The editor was confused by one of the storylines, which I probably changed halfway through the story, forgot, changed it again, forgot about it, blah blah blah. The reread shouldn't be too bad.

Darn, hate it when that happens. After a while, you get tired of editing the same story. I had to edit mine so many times and still, it comes back so not sure what I am doing wrong. Writing articles is so much easier to get published.

...I didn't see it - I thought you might know since you submitted your book to them.

I'm prepping my 30-ish pages for a contest entry, then working on edits from the first novel in the trilogy. I have someone ready to beta read it in April so I have to finish it before then.

I'm thinking of entering a contest where the final judge is a random house editor. I've started the dive into self publishing, but I'd rather have a print contract. We'll see what happens.

Kissing scene is done. He dissed her (with good reason) at the end, so now I have to figure out what she does next.

I checked out what Elf said about showing where something ends and that is not the case.
I did notice the paper is the same way on top of the page before any writing so it might be the paper they use.

I sent out the novel to Littery Wanderlust and got notification they received so now I wait.

Been trying to find others in the romance field.

I've always seen the space in chapters to mark scene changes and on occasion a point of view change. Helps so the reader knows something is going on instead of just jumping around. In fact, wish some writers would have used a space at times in books I have read. I try to use them when need to change scenes and such, not for cutting anything out.

After closely looking at it I find it could be the kind of paper they are using because it shows up when there is no print on it on a lot of pages.

If you notice sometimes in some paperback books you will notice a white space between a paragraph. It is whiteout used to take something out you do not want there. I figure they were too lazy to do it over when the copywriter makes a mistake.

I think they are pretty so I did use them. I saw them in some books I read too. I also saw where the printer used white ink to erase a sentence. Have you noticed any of that? Also mistakes too in spelling. My GF told me the other day she found some too. Those copywriters do not watch what they are doing all the time and edit it. I had it happen to me in the newspaper and it has the spelling wrong. I called but they would not do it again.

Abby, that is what I mean. I used a space instead of stars. Should I use stars?'

The changing to another character is what I mean. When I had two in the chapter I used a space instead of stars so maybe I should use the stars.

I only have two POV characters and put the third on another chapter. I am editing again and find I still have mistakes. But not many and I am correcting them before sending out again.

I also moved the man finding his father from chapter 2 to Chapter 7 so it would not be too close to the top.

I have about 85,000 words and sometimes I keep adding to the story in some places to make it sound better. Funny when you read it again more than once you get more ideas to add and make it more interesting.

I'm not sure what you mean with a space.
I usually designate section breaks with ***

My chapters are about 5,000 words and have two distinct sections. Sometimes they are the same POV character. Sometimes the POV changes to another character.

If you have a short chapter can you put something else in that chapter with a space?
For example if a character is talking to someone and then ends the conversation can that character he was talking to before come in after a space and maybe talking about her going to work or doing something at home?

Well, there is a reason the contest was called The Weekly Quickie. Now the word count is 869 but when it first started, it was 669. I got mine to exactly 869 but you can only take so long to write flash fiction especially with a deadline to enter.

Yesterday I wrote a quick story for the week challenge. It is rough and more like a scene but got it done. Have started a story for the month too that will probably go for this week's story too as I have days to finish it. Will see how it goes during the week with work and all.

I was all ready to submit to a publisher when I read they want the book for 5 years. I don't know where I will be in 5 years, even if I will be here. Then they said you need to copyright the book. I thought they did. So I am still looking.

I have been going through a list from a to z on publisher but find when I look at the books they publish they are not romance, so no sense sending them my novel. I guess I have to just keep looking.

... I may have misspoke. Records of sales are available to you online from the different distribution sites. When you publish a book on a site like Smashwords or Amazon, you set up an account.

You don't need an ASIN but it's helpful to have.

One said they would give you l0 books free and royalties Another said the books were 20 dollars and they would give you 25 percent off, which was 4.00.

I know the book is copywritten when you write it but I also read you can send it to yourself and not open the envelope. I have done that too.

I didn't know they sent you records of sales. I remember years ago when writing for the mag and newspapers they sent me the W2 forms. And after 400 dollars I had to file.

On my first book the publisher put the Asin number in for me, but I thought if you self published you had to get one yourself.

I found a list of publishers and I am going through them but they are not romance so when I see the books and they are not what I think mine would fall into I disregard them.

Manie, I have to buy my own books from my publisher at 50 percent off cover price.

Your book is copyrighted the minute you've written it. However, registering that copyright is a good idea (but not necessary). And the sites that sell your book will send you records of sales, like a publisher does.

The number you're thinking of is an ASIN. Most places that distribute your book will assign a number to you and list themselves as publisher. If you want to give a name for a publisher, then you have to buy your own number. I haven't researched the pros and cons of owning your own number yet.

I find they charge you for books you want for yourself. One said they take 25 percent off of a 20 dollar book. So you would end up paying l6.00 and try to make up the difference when you sell it yourself.

Self-publishing you have to copyright book and get a number forgot what they call them so you can publish it yourself. Then you have to keep records of what you sell for income tax whereas publishers send you that end of the year. When I was writing for magazines and newspapers it was 400 free and after that, you had to pay taxes.

When I wrote here I was still editing. Finished now and been on computer looking for publishers. So hard to find some with books most digital.

I got as far as chapter 3 which I hope to edit today and then continue to add later when I come to the place I want to add something else. The mind sometimes works when I get to a certain spot.
