I always stall when I get to the ending. I have 2 novels right now I need to write the ends for to finish the first draft.

Oh, yeah. A happy ending is a MUST for a romance. Readers dive into them to escape.

Publishers like to see a happy ending in romance. If you feel you do not want to end it happy then it is better to do a sequel of the novel, with continuation. Endings in a mystery do not always end happy and sometimes you can leave it hanging. What type of endings to you like to write?

Endings for me. But now I try to do a full circle thing with them. It could be a romance thing.

It can be, especially in nanowrimo cause at the start of the month you were at word one, but to be at the end in such a short time, it can be difficult. And the ending has to a lot. It has to answer all of the questions (or at least some if it's a series) and it has to fulfill the promises the book made to the reader. Lots of pressure, just like the beginning, to do it well.

Abby, I have so many books now and no place for news ones. My gf keeps sending them to me and I have to keep sending out packages to her, when I finish, or else they pile up.
Then my gf from NY brings down a bunch when she comes to visit.

I am using my Barnes and Nobel for the new Writers' Market, but haven't had time to go get it yet.

Hehe, a little bit but with the increasing amount of sequels/series, it's almost necessary now because there has to be room for plot in the future.

Some genres are more open to any type of ending compared to others. Most "typical" romance publishers want Happy Ever After, or at least Happy For Now endings because that is what the reader expects from the books they publish.

In general, it helps to have some kind of resolution to the conflict of the story. The readers need something to feel complete as that is something the writer basically promises them from the beginning of the novel.

Sometimes, I never know how I am going to end it. I might like the story so much I don't want to end it. LOL Endings can make you cry, or laugh, or even get you upset, depending on the story. No editor or publisher I wrote to every told me I had to have a happy ending, so sometimes, they are happy and sometimes, even happy, can make you cry

For example, you might find one getting divorced, or a husband cheating, then at the end you find then coming together again. I have seen a lot of books like that. I don't know if I would write one where she left him and even tho he cried to come back she did not take him, but fell in love with some else.

Ooh, unless I go in knowing it's a series. But, again, in romance, you expect your Happily Ever After.

Anyone else read The Dresden Files? The one before Ghost Story - Jim Butcher insisted it wasn't a cliffhanger. RIIIIIIIIIIIIIGHT.

I read a middle grade book by an established author, Brandon Mull. It was so frustrating because not only did it have a cliffhanger ending but I had an advanced reader copy, so the sequel's title hadn't even been announced yet. I had to wait over a year just for the next book. It was frustrating cause he's been in this strange world trying to find a way to save the people and defeat the villain and book 1 ends with him being sent back to his own world. The girl and the others are left behind, and it just kind of ends. I get that it's to lead to a sequel but yeah, that tactic can be very annoying. I need a little closure at the end of a book at least.

I don't know the rules for TV :)

I once read a book and while it had its HEA, a child got kidnapped or ran away or something in the last chapter. It was supposed to lead in to the second book but I was so annoyed by the obvious device that I never read that author again.

Yes, at the end of a series you have to have it end happy. I watched sweet land the other day on tv and it started with an old lady telling her story, went into the story and ended back with her. It was romance and her husband died but it didn't show what she was going to do after his death, just left her burying him.

Indeed it's hard to have a real cliffhanger because it only works for some books and the rest it just ends up annoying. I don't remember the title but there was a book I read in like junior high or high school that ended with a cliffhanger. Had no idea if the main character and the pregnant girl he found while lost in the arctic lives or dies. So annoying. Still bugs me. But when it comes to books like The Giver, the ending where he sleds down no idea knowing what he finds if anything with the child he saved, that is a perfect ending for that book.

Romance books are particular. Has to have the happy ever after in order to work for the romance genre. Anti-romance are books that have romance themes but don't end happy. A series can have some underlying issues that keep going but the main conflict of the book has to be resolved because the novel beginning is a promise and the end is what fulfills the promise. Don't want to disappoint the reader.

In my adult mutant novel, it is a series, but I have the main conflict in the first book end but the main character points out that things are okay for now. I do leave some hints of things that will be what creates the starting conflict in book two.

Of course there are always exceptions, but usually HEA is the rule. Sometimes you can do a Happily For Now. But there usually has to be a resolution.

Another lifetime is 80,000 but Wandering Hearts is 50,000. i know romance wants happy endings, but if you do a series I wonder if you have to leave a happy ending if you are going to continue the story.

In my genre, it's usually frowned upon to not end the story with a Happily Ever After. You can leave secondary characters hanging, though.

Usually I struggle with endings, but the ending to my latest story hit me the other day, Yay!! Too bad I'm only at 20,000 words right now (aiming for at least 80,000).

His is fantasy. He had a publisher request the full manuscript to read but I'm betting as a new author if they accepted the book they would ask him to either cut down or split it into two books.

Indeed, from the research I've done for most genres they want 70,000-90,000. Even young adult (which used to want 50,000) is going more for the 80,000 average. Though still not many want over 120,000 and I know someone who is trying to sell a 200,000 word story.

Some romances can still pull off the 50,000 depending on the type.

I haven't written an ending in a while, but I've been focusing on other things than my novels at the moment. Still need to work on editing the one.

It depends on the type of novel, whether it's a series or not, and the type of ending but I try to make sure the reader will be satisfied. While there are times where a cliffhanger ending works, that is not a common incident. There have been a couple of novels that had cliffhangers and the endings just annoyed me. I like to feel something was complete by the end of the story even if it's in the beginning or middle of a series.

I'm still working on endings. I've written so many beginnings but it's rarer that I make it to the end of the novel draft since I get distracted with other novels. I will keep working on them till they are great.

Well, for the trilogy, the first two end in such a way that they point to there being more, and the third is an "it all worked out" but in a bittersweet sort of way.

I have another that I'm having trouble ending because it's a "happily ever after" sort of ending and I don't like it and am not sure how to fix it yet.

The current mess is no where near ending because the beginning keeps changing the middle. *LOL*

You need an ending that will make the reader remember the story and think about it after it was read. Sometimes, the ending could be wisdon of some sort. If a writer has a problem finding a good ending then it could be because he/she did not stay focused in the story.

How do you do your endings?
