Abby I really never gave it much thought as I haven't been writing a lot lately, like before.
Not even sure if I could tell you. Sometimes, it could get emotional, sometimes sad, sometimes angry, sometimes, pay back, depends on what I am writing and what is happening in the story.

Sometimes, I tend to write about cheating mates, other times romance but not strickly romance as it has other things in it no pertaining to it. Mostly, I write non-fiction, poetry and songs, plus children stories. You can catch my articles on www.authorsden.com/visit/viewArticle

I think it would be fun, Camey, to compare our writing styles. :)

Elf, I love dialogue! Well, I love the fun, flirty, upbeat dialogue. The heart-wrenching emotional stuff is way harder for me.

There is definitely a balance that really helps move a story. On one side, it's possible to have too much description, exposition, etc. However, on the other side of things, it is possible to have too much dialogue. Can be hard to get into a story and see the characters when all they do is talk. But I do like writing dialogue.

I how you have to show your reader and not tell them but what I am trying to converse is having the characters come alive in the story and a lot of time you can also do it by dialogue.
You could have the character talking about something that happened and then mention how the other character reacted when she saw her swollen eyes, trying to hide her tears.

I respectfully and completely disagree that the only way to show emotion is to talk about it. :)

I have this line (or something like it) in my current MS, from the hero's point of view:

The woman was pretty, even with her watery smile and red-rimmed eyes.

Now, granted, we don't really know what's going on, but you can guess she's upset and has been crying.

And another line, same MS, same POV, different scene:
Guilt coiled in his gut.

Now, I LOVE dialogue. In fact, my first drafts are usually 75 percent dialogue, 15 percent cliched emotion, and 10 percent action. But there's a difference between telling your reader something and showing it.

When writing a novel it is important to get your characters to talk to each other. Just writing the story is not going to cut any ice, you need communication. A reader wants to feel the character's pain, or joy and the only way to show the emotion is to have them talk about it.

How do you get your characters to interact with each other?

Hello All,

I am going to be trying to manage my time better after I have this surgery. I am going to write down a plan that I will have to follow on a daily basis.

Like I want to be able to do my exercises first thing in the morning before I even turn my computer on. Then I want to be able to see if I can write something new for my story. I will give myself at least an hour or so for that.

Then I will do whatever cleaning I can do in the house. After all that I will come on the computer and do some posting. If there is too much I will break it up into two separate times. I want to do all that before the 6:00 pm news comes on. If I don't get it all done in one day I will have to carry it over into the next day.

Hope everyone stays safe, healthy, and warm.

Best wishes to all!

Hello All,

I try to be very descriptive when I write. I don't want to over do it though. I think that there must be a fine line on how much you describe a scene or character. I will see what I can do with it.

I actually haven't got to do too much writing lately. I will be getting back to it now that I am feeling better.

Hope everyone stays safe, healthy, and warm.

Best wishes to all!

Sometimes, when you are thinking about a story, your mind starts to talk to you, that is when you need to get to the computer or paper and write it all down. Once characters start to talk they usually don't keep quiet and you need to catch that moment when it comes.

Hello All,

Thank you so much Elf. I really do appreciate all the help with this problem. I will give your ideas a chance to see if it is that indeed. I like the thought about talking to myself, but I could use a hand held tape recorder that would keep my conversation so I could work with it later. I like that idea. I do also have a tape recorder. I would like to get one that only comes on when you start to talk and stops when you do. Maybe I will put it on a Birthday list.

I like all the answers to the my problem. They are all good ways for me to find the right one. I have choices to make. Thank you all again.

Hope everyone stays safe, healthy, and warm.

Hope you feel better soon imagingpro.

I'm probably not much help with this. If my characters won't cooperate and talk then I put the novel aside. I have too many ideas that are great, so no sense wasting time on a novel that isn't going anywhere. Sometimes I have to force a start. I can always edit it later, so I just write whatever I can and soon it starts to flow.

However, there are some options. 1. Are you in the right character's point of view. Maybe the one you are using right now isn't the one the story needs to come from. I've heard both published and unplublished writers talk about this. 2. Skip that scene for now. 3. Try a different method. Write it on paper, type it or even say it out loud. If talking out loud then maybe do it in private cause people look at you weird if you are talking out loud to yourself, especially if holding a full conversation that way.

Hello All,

Thank you so much for the advice.

Sorry I haven't been on for a couple of days. My stomach hasn't been feeling very good. I don't know what is causing it to feel this way. I have been trying to stay quiet so it would go away but as of yet it hasn't. Even food doesn't taste all that good. I am hoping to feel better real soon. I will try to catch back up when I am feeling better.

Hope everyone stays safe, healthy, and warm.

Dialogue is one of the most difficult elements of fiction writing. On the surface, it appears easy to execute - we all speak, don't we? - but real life speech is not nearly as compelling and as pointed as fictional dialogue.

1) When you write dialogue, be mindful of both pace and natural progression. If you are relatively new to writing, read your dialogue aloud to get a better grasp of how you write. Your dialogue should never appeared to be forced into a certain direction, nor should it go on and on with meaningless exchanges.

2) Dialogue is an integral part of your characters. Dialogue should distinguish your fictional characters as much as their actions do. Their personalities should reflect the way they talk. For example, an impatient person might speak in fragments, and a chatty one in run on sentences. A scientist might use a technical vocabulary while a night club owner might spout cutting-edge idioms. Avoid stereotypical and cliché talk unless this is your point.

3) Avoid mundane exchanges. A writer does not have to include everything characters might say to each other. As a general rule, avoid writing empty pleasantries such as "How are you?" and "I'm fine. And you?" While people enter into conversations in real life this way, your job is not to document reality but to create a compelling illusion of reality. To do this, your dialogue must get immediately to the point and do its job in as few words as possible. As you read, note how authors frame their dialogue with summary, how each exchange advances the plot, characterizations, and theme, and how the dialogue is compacted.

4) Dialogue does not always need to be linear in its progression. If you listen to how people talk, you'll see we often digress, or avoid answering a question directly, or are temporarily distracted by the environment or random thoughts. As a writer, you cannot let your dialogue meander in this way, but you may allow information and tension to arise out of conversational lapses. Of course, your readers must understand the logic behind such elliptical dialogue, either by your inserting the distraction itself into the text, or by preparing the reader through previous characterization and plot events. This sounds easier than it is. Study other writers to see how this can be accomplished.

5) Frame your dialogue with narrative descriptions and character gestures. At appropriate times, when you want to create a pause in the conversation or when you want to show a non-verbal reaction, describe what is happening. Let your characters interact with the environment. Although too much description will slow the flow of the conversation, too little can put the speakers in a literary vacuum. Find the balance.

6) Start over if necessary. If you discover you cannot get your characters to make the points you want them to, you may have to begin the exchange anew. Perhaps you began the dialogue on the wrong note, or had introduced emotions contrary to your aim, or have placed your characters at a location not conducive to the type of conversation they are having.

7) Dialogue is not real conversation. As an exercise, record a conversation - with the participants' knowledge, of course - and then type up a transcript, word for word. You'll find the result boring to read. Now edit the transcript to a few pithy lines. Most conversation is filled with extraneous words and exchanges while good dialogue is not. Dialogue only appears to reflect how people speak; it is the edited version of reality.

I am having a hard time with my story. I can't think of how to get my characters to talk to one another. I am writing the story but just telling it like a narrator. I want to make my people talk.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Best wishes to all!
