I had to retire at 60 too early for social security because the company went bankrup and dh was out of work on disability for his back and never could return, so it was hard but we managed. I grew up poor and knew how to save. I remember thinking Sundays were holidays because that was when we had meat.

Yes! My last job was doing taxes. I started off working for one family ran company that had several employees along with the family working. But they could only keep me working for several months each yr during the busy part of the season. The first yr I was going to school part time too, so it was okay. The second yr I got another part time job in it with an older woman that was doing it all on her own. And so that yr I got to work full time for several months and when the one job ended, I got to stay on part time with the 2nd job that I took up in it, and was still going to school some too. Then the second job became more like a full time job. But then the economy tanked and she had to cut my hrs back more and more. And a lot of her long time clients were losing their jobs, businesses and homes. So they were having problems paying her and she started doing more and more freebies trying to help out her long time clients that were like family to her. Finally she couldn't afford to keep me any more and laid me off. The place I worked at first was struggling too had had to lay off lots of their workers a long with me, and had to move into a smaller and cheaper ofc. It was sad hearing all these clients come in with their sad stories, and now I am just like them.

Today, everyone is out for the buck. Electric rates are going up 26 dollars. With my oil company yu have to give 2000 up front for your oil. It is getting that pretty soon people that could afford things will not be able to.

Yeah 1.5 yrs ago when I started I was at 170, and I was doing a lot of running to get ready for my first 5 K. And I was dropping the weight fast and lost about 30 lbs. I ran the 5 K about 3 months after starting. And then after that I seemed to have had one health issue after another. And I found out that I was born with scoliosis and that the running and any jarring exercise was bothering my spine and core muscles. So I switched back to just walking, yoga and stuff like that. And the weight loss slowed way down and started bouncing up and down. I might have even hit a Plato? I can't afford to go to a gym, so I just do what I can in my home or walking around the neighborhood. I have some hand weights that are 1 lb and 3 lbs. I had 10 lb dumb bells too but I think I gave them away or they are stashed out in the garage from my last move and I haven't found them. I also have some exercise bands that I can use.

Yes, dogs can be really expensive, lol. I had to pay $1200 per month rent in my last place, $1200 deposit for me, and another $1200 deposit for my dog too. I was lucky then that I had a lot of savings at that time, as I really wasn't making that much money. But in the long run the place was just to expensive for me to live in by myself. As I was working 2 part time jobs and lost one of them. And then I picked up more hrs at the 2nd one, and then later they had to keep cutting my hrs back more and more because of the economy until I just ended up getting laid off a couple yrs ago.

My bf was paying about the same for a place for him and his son that only lived with him half the time. So he decided to buy a place that we could all move into, and instead of paying strangers rent, we are putting that same money towards the mortgage. So there was no more big deposits for me or the dog. My dog passed away earlier this month. The dog I am walking now is one the bf bought for his son whom is only with us half the week. She is just going on 2 yrs old and misses my dog, misses the boy whom is with his mom right now, and misses the bf whom is out of the country right now. So she is my motivation right now, she loves to go for walks and car rides.

But if I was living on my own again, I doubt that I would be able to afford to have a dog again, as all the apts, condos and such like to charge big deposits for them.

Janette, Leader of the Wii Fit Plus Team.

Ah. Yeah, I can see how it works well at some stages of the journey but not for all parts. I've only been really focused on this since the beginning of September, so for right now with the calorie deficit and exercising, both scale and measurements are changing for me. Course 20+ lbs lost should equal a little bit lost in measurements too. Will be different when I'm only losing a couple lbs a month or less.

I started walking in September and did so in October. Now I'm going to the gym since I have a membership and use the treadmills but also am starting to lift weights. I'm going to try a heavy weight lifting program as soon as I learn the lifts needed. Some are easy, like bench press, but I've never done 2 of them so I'm slowly getting familiar with the moves at very low weights. Then I'll progress from there. But I also don't have any pets, I don't like the idea of having a dog in an apartment and I can't afford the extra pet rent (yeah they do that here) along with the food and stuff since I can barely afford myself. Some day I'll have a pet but probably a cat cause I love cats.

I was measuring once a month when I started 1.5 yrs ago. And at first that was where I was seeing the changes first not the scale. Then it seemed back and forth as which was going to show the loss. I have gotten lazy in the measuring lately though. I still try to weigh myself daily, not because I really care what it shows, but because I am doing a streak with weighing myself on our Wii Fit Plus. Measuring has slowed down to every 2-3 months. I got discouraged with it. Just before last Christmas my stomach was looking a lot flatter, and then I started to have IBS problems coming and going for a while. And ever since I have just looked and felt bloated in the stomach even though I am still losing lbs. So I haven't measured as much as before. And the ibs has settled way down, but I still feel and look bloated. I think I need to work more on the strength exercises and such and not just tons of walking? But I just don't get motivated easily to to that. As much as having a dog giving me the sad eyes wanting a walk, lol.

Food measuring aside...

I'm curious, does anyone take body measurements? I don't know how much it will change if you only have 10-15 lbs to lose, but if exercising and such, I know many suggest measuring along with the scale cause sometimes your body will change when the scale doesn't.

I measure once a month, on the 15th.

Most of my life I lived with other people that did the cooking. There was a few years before my parents passed way that my sister and I both lived with them. My sister and I took care of my parents and we took turns cooking. And I was married for about 3 yrs and did all the cooking too. Then I had a few yrs on my own where I either did all the cooking, or got microwavable food, or take out. When I met my bf about 5 yrs ago he really liked to cook and by that time I had grown tired of cooking. And he was so much better at it too. So it just made sense to us for him to cook and me to clean when we decided to move in together a few yrs ago.

He had to go out of the country for a few weeks for work last Sunday, so I am back to my doing microwave stuff, or easy to cook stuff, or getting take out while he is gone.

I wish I had someone to make food for me. I'm single and not even a roommate or family member (all my family live in a different state than me). So, a scale to learn exact grams and such wouldn't be too much of a hassle for me. But even without, I think I'll manage just fine.

Yeah, I was tracking really good at the beginning too, and I also am on MFP! But after doing this for like 1.5 yrs I do think I am pretty good at judging stuff now. And I didn't ask for a food scale because the bf would just find it more of a pain to him with making my dinners. He already acts some times like it is an inconvenience to him to try to make sure that I don't have too much greasy, fatty, fried foods, processed or fast foods, or sodium as it is. And doesn't seem to like the idea of spending money whether it is his money or my own on a bunch of fruits and veggies that only I want to eat either. So I am in this life style change all on my own. He and his son always has tons of cookies, candy, chips and other junk food in the house. My hard one to pass up some times is chocolate and chips. Some times I have great will power, but give me a stressed out day like when my dog died, or when the truck died and I was all alone, and that will power can easily fly out the window some times. Luckily I did good those days. But last night after I had already logged what I thought I was going to eat for the day. Plans got changed and I ate some junk food with the kid while he was here, and then didn't eat what I had planned for my dinner either, and ended up eating cheese, crackers and pepperoni as a late dinner. So not so healthy as I had planned, but something fast to eat at the last minute. It tasted great too, but I ended up with heartburn for the first time in several yrs. So I think I learned my lesson there.

I don't have a food scale either, though people over on myfitnesspal in the forums always post about how you need one to know how many calories you are getting and such. I did put it on my wish list for christmas, but if I don't get one I won't care either. I do okay with the general stuff on the web site and guessing my portion sizes for now. Maybe when I only have 10-20 lbs to lose it will be more important to tighten the calorie counts, but with over 50 to lose it's not hard to have a calorie deficit even with guessing. I'm keeping track of calories for now, but hopefully I'll be comfortable enough after a year or so that I can ease off on the tracking and know in general when I'm eating enough per day.

Yeah, I don't weigh my food. And the bf serves me at dinner and doesn't weigh or measure my stuff at all either. If I am making for myself I will measure it though. But we don't have a scale for food, and I don't want to spend the money on one. So my stuff usually just gets eye balled and guessed at a lot. And a lot of the take out food I just have to guess at what to put for it as I can't get calorie info for a lot of the restaurants that he goes to. So I know that helps mine go up more with more of the restaurant food. And goes down more when I can better track what I am really eating. But then some times I just want to eat what the rest of the family is eating too and not have to thing so much about all the calories and such.

emoticon I hope to get the scales moving in the right direction asap. It's been difficult since I was injured in a car accident just over 3 months ago. I had my second procedure performed by a loving Hospital staff. Inactivity meds and eating what I'm served is pushing the pounds on. My decision to bend my elbow though.. Soon I hope to be allowed to do PT, chair exercises emoticon and emoticon , at least.

Della.

We can drive about an hour or so and get to mountains with snow, or get to the desert. There is lakes close by, the closest just a few mins away and others about 20 mins or so. And the Ocean is about 30 mins away. So we can get to it all, but right where we are is really mild weather. And the worse we probably get is some frost on the ground or some hail during the winter time, Or in Oct we can get really bad Santa Anna winds that some times can cause really bad problems with fires around us. And rarely we get earth quakes that we can feel, but we don't really get much damage from them like they get down in Mexico or up in northern CA, like in Los Angeles and San Francisco.

I have lost about 30 lbs since I joined over a yr ago. Eating more whole foods, less processed and fast foods, watching my servings and getting more exercise. Like I walked over 3.5 miles with the pup in our neighborhood this morning.

The board is for losing weight. The board is for helping people to lose weight? The board is for questions on why you are not losing weight? Some are losing and not letting us know.
Come on and encourage others. Losing weight is not an easy task. But, with support you can do it. Take our hand and we will walk you through it. What is holding you back? What are you doing wrong? Lets talk about it.
