If you are active on the site, you have probably read through Sparkpeople's many articles. I have learned a cool trick to feeling full without extra calories. Load vegetables onto half of your plate before you serve yourself protein and starch. This is called the half plate rule. Today, I want every meal to be served up alongside half of a plate of veggies. Or fruit. Produce is your best friend!

I know that we all plan for our cardio and/or strength training. Have you ever considered that you can fit in some of that during your "down times"?

Think about it..do you sit in traffic? Wait for copies at the copier? Wait for the kids to get out of school? Wait for the coffee to finish brewing? Wait for your e-mail server to give you your messages? Wait for commercials to get over so you can watch your favorite show?

During these "down times", try a little something new.

*While waiting for your coffee to brew or the copier to finish copying, do some squats, leg/heel lifts
*While waiting in traffic, do some buttocks squeezes
*While at the computer RIGHT NOW, do some sitting tummy crunches
*Park your car farther in the parking lot for grocery shopping, picking up the kids, etc.
*Take the stairs
*Walk that message that you would usually e-mail to a co-worker to them personally
*When commercials come on, jog in place or do sit-ups

You get the idea..fit in some "unplanned and unexpected" exercise into your day. Every little bit helps and counts!

My challenge to you today is two-fold:

First, name something that you are proud of doing for YOU since putting your health first.

Second, when the scale doesn't budge, what can YOU do to motivate yourself?

I think that we all hit "rough times" in our weight loss journey. This weight didn't come on overnight and it will take time and a few "rough roads" to get it off.

I am hoping that this challenge/discussion will help folks that are on the "rough road" right now. Personally, I am hoping to get a few ideas and a little inspiration. We can ALL use that from time to time.

We can do this everyone! We are making ourselves into healthier, happier individuals. I am VERY PROUD of each and every one of you.

Here is one of my all-time favorite challenges - Beautify Day. What does that mean? Today is the day to beautify something. It could be:

1) Beautify Your Environment - Clean or straighten something. Plant flowers, etc.

2) Beautify Your Mind - Read something inspirational, meditate, watch a movie that moves you.

3) Beautify Your Body - TAKE CARE OF YOU! Give yourself a manicure, body scrub, hair coloring, hair cut, pedicure.

4) Beautify Mankind - Do something nice for someone you don't know. Go out of your way to help others.

I hope that everyone enjoys this challenge as much as I always do. Take care of yourself and..

Don't go hungry ..... Stock your car and purse with easy, grab'n'go snacks. Some ideas include popcorn, trail mix, granola bars, or sliced veggies. I remember I use to worry about my calories being to high if I didn't eat on schedule, but if I let myself get hungry instead, then I'd overeat later. Make sure that you always, not just today, are prepared to combat hunger!

I want you to perform some sort of cardio during ALL TV commercials. Whether you watch TV during the day or in the evenings. Get up and march on the spot, do jumping jacks, maybe a few crunches. Even if you are sitting in a chair do some tummy cruches (tuck in that tummy and hold to the count of 5 and then repeat until the commercial is over)

Valentine's day is of course associated with boxes of chocolates and rich, decadent dinners out. I am all for relaxing eating rules for special celebrations such as this. However, if you do this, then you should treat V-day like any other day in terms of exercise. Perhaps go for a nice quiet walk after dinner with your significant other, Whatever you decide to do have a very HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY my friends. emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

How many pounds have you lost? 1? 10? 20? 50? For EVERY pound that you have lost thus far, take out a paperclip. Chain them together. Carry this paperclip chain with you as a visual reminder of the commitment to YOU.

Haven't lost a pound yet? Here is a suggestion. Go to the dairy section of your local grocery store. Pick up a one pound box of butter. What is that? A bunch of unwanted calories and fat, right? Think about how heavy that is. Are you worth losing a pound? Isn't keeping track of your food and exercise worth it? YOU CAN DO THIS!!!

When you might feel like: "Geez, I have ONLY lost 3 pounds...", pick up that much in butter (or a sack of potatoes, etc.). I find that actually seeing/feeling helps to motivate.

So...get those paperclips out!

Portion control day!

Have you been eye-balling that bowl of cereal in the morning? Guessing that the creamer in your coffee is only a teaspoon? Well, today is a great day to MEASURE EVERYTHING you eat/drink.

A fellow Sparker recommended eating off of a sandwich plate for meals instead of the usual dinner plate. This is a trick on your eye, but it just might work.

I know you all have a favorite recipe (or easy/quick snack) that you enjoy. Share one with the group!!

Here's a recipe I can share with you..... emoticon emoticon emoticon



Stuffed Strawberry Cheesecakes
Strawberries 24
Light Cream Cheese 4 oz
Confectioner's sugar (although I used Splenda for baking) 2 tblsp
Vanilla Extract 1/2 tsp

wash the strawberries and cut off the stems. Cut a hole in each using the tip of a paring knife. Combine other ingredients in a small bowl; mix well. Using a spoon or small knife (I used my little crudite knife) spoon mixture into each strawberry, leaving some to dollop on top. Garnish with fresh mint, if you want.
Serving size: 4 stuffed strawberries
71 calories, 3 grams fat, 9 g carbs, 2 g protein, 1 g fiber (Shape's numbers)

Remember when you were new to Spark and wondering how the people and program would help you? Did you have some folks encourage you and help you when you needed to hear it?

Today is the day to go to the Introduce Yourself boards and encourage 3 new folks. Tell them a little about yourself. Direct them about the nutrition and/or fitness area. Help make a new Sparker feel that they have taken the first step to a happier, healthier person. You will be glad you did!

PROCRASTINATION ELIMINATION DAY!

Have you been putting something off and "really" need to get it done? Clean your garage, put away laundry, sort out your closet, pull weeds, do your mending, clean the refrigerator, pay those bills, phone a friend, run those errands.....

Today is the day to GET IT DONE!

Start an "Instead of Eating Jar"...

Okay, I have to say that this is not my idea but it is one of my personal favorites. I read this in a magazine or something a few years back and LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the idea.

Here is how it works:

1)Get a jar/canister or something to put pieces of paper in.

2)On little pieces of paper, write down something that you can do RIGHT NOW instead of putting that bite of food in your mouth.

3)Put all of the ideas in your jar and put them close to or in an area where you are tempted to eat (at work on your desk, in your pantry, by your nightstand while watching television, etc.)

After you have done this, throw out an idea or two that you have come up with and share it with the group. I did this challenge a few months ago and got some great responses for my own jar. Here is a sample:

*Go for a walk
*Paint my nails
*Brush my teeth
*Play a game with the kids
*Write a letter
*Read a poem or bible verse
*Clean the bathtub
*Organize my shoes in closet

You get the idea...
I KNOW that you are all amazingly creative folks. Share some of your ideas!!

Went out today for a walk, then headed around the city for some errands before coming back and going for another walk!

Good Thursday to you my sparking friends....


I know that our members come from all over the world. Many of us are freezing in the US and Canada right now because it is winter. Some of us are enjoying warm weather and sunshine because we are in summer. Wherever you are, I want you to GO OUTSIDE FOR SOME FRESH AIR TODAY.

Your challenge is to do an activity OUTSIDE. Some suggestions are:

*Shovel snow
*Snow shoe, ski, snowmobile ride
*Ice skate
*Bike, jog, hike, or walk
*Garden
*Rake leaves
*Play a game with the kiddos (i.e. soccer, basketball, kickball, etc.)
*Jump on the trampoline

Here I go! =)

Breakfast: 1 cup of activia breakfast blend of vanilla yogurt, 1/2 cup of organic vanilla and almond crunch, 1 cup of diced strawberries & sliced bananas

Snack: 1 cup of activia banana bread yogurt with sliced banana

Lunch: 1 cup dole spring mix, 1 cup dole baby spinach, 1/2 cup brown rice, 1 cup of steamed veggies, 4 oz. ground turkey with garlic, onion, salt & pepper.

Snack: banana ice cream [made of frozen bananas in blender]

Dinner: 1 cup dole spring mix, 1 cup dole baby spinach, 1/2 cup brown rice, 2 cups steamed veggies, 1 can of tuna drained with 1 egg, garlic & onion [mixed together to make tuna patties]

Here is my plan for the day....

Breakfast....spinach quiche with green peppers and onion (no pastry) and half a banana and 1 cup of V- Go (vegetable juice)

Snack....celery stick (with moza cheese)

Lunch....Lettuce salad, with ( chicken breast, carrot, celery, radishes, cherry tomatoes and green onions)

Afternoon snack....yogurt with strawberries

Supper....coleslaw made with,( carrots, radishes, celery, onion and yogurt with raspberries)
