Day 15 Theme: Decision Making

David enquired of the Lord yet again– 1 Samuel 23:4a

Nine times in the Scripture we find this statement -- “David enquired” of the Lord, or of God. Every one of these instances was after David had become a great leader. And yet David shows us that great leadership results from being a great follower of God. Even in the most practical or mundane of matters.

Many times, when we are faced with challenging situations, our first inclination, especially if there are others waiting upon or relying on our answer, is to make a hasty decision based on the best understanding we have at the moment. But we should develop the habit, like David, of asking the Lord for direction first.

Perhaps you have already sought the Lord’s guidance, though, in a particular situation — a relationship, or a promotion, or a relocation, or another life-changing decision. Or maybe you received clear direction for your last decision, but a fresh challenge has presented itself.

Then inquire of the Lord yet again. There is no such thing as being too dependent upon God. He never wearies of our questions, and we never out-grow our inadequacy without Him.

The great encouragement is that when David went to the Lord yet again, then “the Lord answered him” (23:4b). He always answers those who inquire of Him, and so He will answer you when you call upon Him and inquire of Him, dear believer.

JUNE 13
MORNING

Abide in me, and I in you.

I am crucified with Christ; nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.

I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not. O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death? I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. -- If Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin, but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. -- If ye continue in the faith grounded and settled, and be not moved away from the hope of the gospel, which ye have heard.

Little children, abide in him; that, when he shall appear, we may have confidence, and not be ashamed before him at his coming. -- He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.

JOHN 15:4. Gal. 2:20. Rom. 7:18,24,25. ‑Rom. 8:10. ‑Col. 1:23. I John 2:28. ‑I John 2:6.

Rejoicing in God's Mercy

We all are familiar with the story of the Prodigal Son. After he had wasted his inheritance, he came to his senses and returned home, hoping he could just be a servant to his father.

His father wouldn't even consider it. He put the best robe on him, put a ring on his finger, sandals on his feet, and then had the fatted calf killed for a party. The father delighted in showing mercy to his son!

But what about the older brother? He stood outside the party and wouldn't come in to celebrate. He was so angry! He had never messed up and yet his father had never thrown him a party!

Sometimes, if we are not careful, we can have the attitude of that older son. We can look at the lives of others and think, "That is not fair. I know he's been messing up, and God is blessing him. What's up with that? I haven't been as bad as him!"

We need to remember that God delights in showing mercy to the guilty when, from a sincere heart, they seek that mercy. He delights when you and I ask for His mercy when we have blown it.

Micah 6:7-8 says,

Will the LORD be pleased with thousands of rams, ten thousand rivers of oil? Shall I give my firstborn for my transgression, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul? He has shown you, O man, what is good; and what does the LORD require of you but to do justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?

God delights in showing mercy. So be a person of mercy, and rejoice when God shows mercy to someone who needs it.

1 Peter 1:8
Whom having not seen, ye love; in whom, though now ye see him not, yet believing, ye rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory.

When it's all over, we can hardly believe we struggled so much. The reward of losing weight is so great that it wipes out all the bad memories along the way. We experience such a sense of triumph and joy, accomplishment and goodwill. We feel a power from within that helps us believe that anything is possible to us, if we will only have patience, courage, and commitment. God has made us conquerors, and He empowers us to do those things which we set our minds and hearts too. When we live life in hope of glories to come and pursue those glories with everything we have, the Lord will reward us and bless us richly.

Today's thought: I may not see it yet, but a new me is right around the corner!

Matthew 9:28
And when he was come into the house, the blind men came to him: and Jesus saith unto them, 'Believe ye that I am able to do this?' They said unto him, 'Yea, Lord.'

Doubt is a killer. It kills our enthusiasm, our faith, our hope, our initiative, and our dedication. When we begin to doubt that we can succeed in our diet attempts, we lose the most vital ingredient for success. You have to believe. In Scripture, Jesus often asked people if they believed He could do miracles. When they said yes, fantastic things happened, but when they said no, nothing happened. We need to say yes to God and believe He will bless all of our attempts to lose weight. With God on our side, there is absolutely no reason for doubt to affect us at all.

Today's thought: I'll try to believe, so more pounds will leave.

1 John 3:3
And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.

One of the best side effects of dieting is the purging our bodies receive. Interestingly, our bodies function best when we eat less. We don't overload our systems, and therefore they work better. Our bodies get cleaned out, and we feel better. It is easy to forget that we are helping our bodies operate at peak efficiency, and that our dieting cleans our entire system. Few people would mind feeling great, and God wishes for all of us a healthy, happy life. He created our systems to maintain themselves, but they can only do so if we will respect them and care for them properly.

Today's thought: My body's in need of a good spring cleaning!

Luke 5:12
And it came to pass, when he was in a certain city, behold a man full of leprosy: who seeing Jesus fell on his face, and besought him, saying, 'Lord, if thou wilt, thou canst make me clean.'

Being overweight can sometimes feel like having leprosy. Fatness sets us apart from others and makes us feel different. We feel like outcasts, rejected by our 'thin is in' society. Our greatest hope comes to us through the power of the Lord, who is willing to help us in every way possible in our attempts to lose weight. Like the man full of leprosy, all we need do is stretch out our hands to Jesus, and He will make us clean. We do not have to live as outcasts, but are full members of the glorious family of our Lord, and He is waiting to welcome us.

Today's thought: Fitness, as well as cleanliness, is next to godliness.

Psalm 71:5
For thou art my hope, O Lord God: thou art my trust from my youth.

A friend of mine slipped into a well when he was a child, and all he remembers of the experience was praying to God and awaiting rescue. He recounts how he felt no fear because he knew God would get him out of his trouble. He placed his hope in the Lord, and he was not disappointed. Being overweight can sometimes feel like being in the bottom of a deep, dark well, with no way out. But we do have a way out. The Lord is a lifeline and a Savior indeed. If we will place our trust in Him, He will be faithful to lift us out of the dark places and set us fully in the light.

Today's thought: Lift me from my well of obesity!

SPEAK GOD'S WORDS, NOT YOURS

GOD'S PLAN FOR YOUR LIFE IS EVEN BIGGER THAN YOUR PLAN.
HOWEVER, TO ENTER INTO HIS PLAN, YOU MUST BELIEVE IN
AND AFFIRM IT BY WHAT YOU SAY. JESUS' LIFE WAS SUCCESSFUL
BECAUSE HE DIDN'T SPEAK HIS OWN WORDS; HE SPOKE HIS
GOD'S WORDS.

THE SECRET TO LIVING A VICTORIOUS LIFE IN FAITH. IT WAS A
MAJOR KEY TO JESUS' POWER ON EARTH. JESUS DIDN'T INVENT
WORDS TO SAY. HE WAS ALWAYS PRAYING TO GOD WHAT GOD HAD
SAID. HE KNEW WHO HE WAS, WHAT HE BELIEVED, AND WHAT TO
SAY. THE SAME CAN BE TRUE FOR US IF WE FOLLOW HIS EXAMPLE.

SCRIPTURE READING: JOHN 12:49-50; JOHN 14:10,24 emoticon

PRAYER FATHER, TEACH ME HOW TO SPEAK AND PRAY
YOUR WORD, SO THAT MY WORDS ARE YOUR WORDS,
AND MY WORKS ARE YOUR WORKS. emoticon

THOUGHT: SPEAKING THE FATHER'S WORDS WAS THE
PRIMARY SECRET OF JESUS' POWER.

But Will He Conquer My "Death"?
Glynnis Whitwer

"Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead." 1 Peter 1:3 (NIV)

Devotion:
It was Easter, but I didn't want to celebrate. My head knew the truth of new life, but my heart felt like I was living in a valley of death.

Every Easter we had sung songs about Jesus conquering death and rejoiced at His resurrection. Normally it was a glorious celebration, but not that year.

An outsider might have scoffed. I wasn't dealing with real death, thankfully. Instead, an avalanche of daily deaths was burying me. My heart was breaking over the end of a ministry at church I loved.

We thanked God for our adopted daughters, but their severe needs forever ended my family the way it was. And because of those needs, I was having to close doors of opportunity that brought me great joy. One "death" after another faced me.

As I stood that Easter Sunday, arms raised in pleading more than praise, with tears streaming down my face, I begged God, "I know You raised Jesus from the dead. But will You conquer my death? Will You redeem what feels like death here and now?"

The power of my emotions poured out in waves of grief.

Before then, I had not admitted to myself that what I faced felt like death. But there it was. Putting a name to it helped. The song ended, I dried my tears, and the service continued. No lightning bolt flashed, but my heart felt a little lighter.

In the coming weeks I allowed myself to feel the grief of loss. When sadness swept over my heart, I returned to my same questions: God, I know You can, but will You conquer my death?

I prayed for new life to come into my areas of "death."

Interestingly, a month later I went to a conference where God opened floodgates of inspiration and ideas. I left more excited about the future than I'd been in years. One day that summer, I realized God had eased my heart over the loss of the ministry I had loved.

In late summer, God handed me an incredible gift of another ministry job that I could manage in my crazy schedule. In early fall we found a therapist who could help our family with one of our daughters. Within months of my pleading prayer, it became obvious God was resurrecting what seemed dead.

While my circumstances weren't changed in every situation, my heart was comforted. My hope was resurrected.

Jesus showed me He is the Conqueror of all death: here in this world and forever. God answered my question and prayer with a resounding "Yes!" Yes, He can and will conquer my death. I don't have to wait for eternal life to experience my own resurrection of the heart. And neither do you.

Dear Lord, I praise You today for Your power over all death both physical and emotional here on earth and for eternity. Thank You for caring about the loss in my life, and bringing Your resurrection power into my everyday problems. I give You my grief and pain, and ask for Your healing touch to bring new life. In Jesus' Name, Amen.

Are you facing the death of something you love in your life? If so, take time to acknowledge it, and allow yourself to grieve.

Is it difficult to acknowledge the depth of loss? If so, why is that?

Romans 6:4 (see below) speaks of the promise of "new life." What does that mean for a follower of Jesus?

Power Verses:
1 Corinthians 15:54, "When the perishable has been clothed with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality, then the saying that is written will come true: 'Death has been swallowed up in victory.'" (NIV, 2011)

Romans 6:4-5, "We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life. For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we will certainly also be united with him in a resurrection like his." (NIV, 2011)

OPEN TO WORSHIP

WORSHIP BEGINS WITH TRUST. TRUST MEANS PRESENTING
OUR HEARTS TO GOD AND SAYING, "LORD HERE I AM. I CANNOT
SEE YOU CLEARLY, FOR THE DUST IN THIS LIFE HAS SETTLED ON
THE GLASS OF MY HEART AND I SEE YOU ONLY FAINTLY. WOULD
YOU PLEASE TAKE ME TO YOURSELF AND WIPE OFF THE DUST
SO THAT I MIGHT SEE YOU AND KNOW YOU A LITTLE BETTER?
WORSHIP II TRUSTING GOD ENOUGH TO LET GOD TAKE YOUR
HEART AND CLEANSE IT- FREE IT- OF ANYTHING THAT SEPARATES
YOU FOR HIM." BY DENNIS JERNIGAN emoticon

ASCRIBE TO THE LORD THE GLORY DUE HIS NAME;
WORSHIP THE LORD IN THE SPLENDOR OF HIS
HOLINESS. PS 29:2 emoticon

As always, thank you for a great reminder. We all have times when we fail to remember that God takes care of his children, and he is definitely the best one to do the job. You hit it right on the mark today. Wonderful! Thank you so much. emoticon

I was just saying the same thing and it is good to hear it from someone else! Thank you Jesus!! I love You Lord!!

Romans 8:1
There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.

May God richly bless you!

In Jesus Name
Amen

GOD OPEN'S DOORS

THERE ARE TIMES WHEN WE ARE FACED WITH SITUATIONS OR
DOORS THAT STAY CLOSE. AND TRY AS WE OFTEN DO TO
OPEN THE DOORS THEY REMAIN CLOSE. THIS IS A JOB FOR JESUS!
STEP BACK AND LET GOD DO IT. HE HAS PROMISED US THAT HE WILL
MAKE A WAY OF ESCAPE THAT WE MAY BE ABLE TO BEAR IT.

THOUGHT FOR TODAY: YOU CAN BE CONFIDENT THAT REGARDLESS OF
WHAT YOU ARE FACING OR HOW YOU HAVE FAILED, GOD WILL HELP
YOU IF YOU TRUST IN HIM. emoticon
