I can understand that, if my son got sick or anyone in my family, I would not eat there again. My father got food poising and was really sick. they was traveling across country.

I think I have a warped sense of the eat all you can places - possibly because my son ate at one and was violently ill afterwards!!! (probably ate TOO much)

But I know some nasty tricks that are pulled in certain places here locally so I think I will stay with the stuff I have here and drop it on the floor for the cats to eat!!

Me too. It's not like I eat at buffets every week either. But I've been doing this for 16+ months and will probably do so for the rest of my life. As long as you're smart, you can eat just as healthfully at a Hometown Buffet or whatever as you can at any other restaurant. There are plenty of healthy choices.

My husband is an executive chef at an upscale restaurant and we had a pretty successful restaurant ourselves. In addition, when I was growing up my mother supported us as a waitress, so I'm pretty comfortable with restaurants and know the reality.

just because I might eat at those places doesn't mean I am not changing my ways... I stay away from most fried foods there and limit what I do eat there and try to eat more veggies and fruits.

I think in the 10 years that this foodie goodie was in the mall, thew family only went twice... for birthday parties... because it was the kids' restaurant of choice... I prefer Swiss Chalet for chicken!... Ray

That's my aim - all you can eat places are not part of a healthy way of living, and if you look at this site nad you look at your card you promised to change to a healthier way of living - thus not eating at all you can eat places!!

back to topic - I hope by now I have put some of you if not ALL of you OFF EATING ALL YOU CAN EAT PLACES - just remember if you are snooty, don't leave a tip, or are in anyway seen to be annoying (which EVERY customer is!!) they will - YES WILL spit, rub your meat on the floor etc with your food before they bring it to your table! So be nice to them, or better stil DON'T GO!!! THINK OF ALL THAT FAT!!!!!!!

I also have to get 2 new tyres in the next week or 2 - that will only just be under £100 ($200) - gasp - yeh!!! it's expensive here! a loaf of good healthy bread will set you back ooh £1.20 that for you is $2.40 - are you ready for that?

I haven't paid for breakfast like that - but I have had one - where it was paid for by the then bf...
In London at 4am, smoked salmon with freshly made scrambled eggs, champagne, coffee, and I think there was a danish or croissants as well..... I don't think he paid under £50!!! (those WERE the days!!LOL) so thats $100 .... beat that!!!

And just to scare you all a bit more - I filled up my car with petrol yesterday - the stuff you call gas.. we are now paying £1.09 PER LITRE.... it took 50 BRITISH GALLONS (it's only a Ford Focus!) and cost me just over £51 - that is $102 to fill the tank of a medium sized car.... all I could think was OUCH!

geez...i live in NY..admittedly rural no where near the city (like 8 hours away from it) but if you want a HUGE breakfast of 3 pancakes, 3 strips of bacon, 2 sausage patties and 2 eggs and home fries with endless coffee or tea its about $4.50 or $5. And seeing as there are alot of Maple syrup producers here they even serve REAL maple syrup with it, not the fake corn syrup stuff!!
I absolutely would NOT spend $40 for breakfast. During the summer i got a King cut (16 oz or 1 lb) prime rib with a loaded baked potato and all you can eat salad/soup/bread bar for $19.95. I dont drink so including the tip i walked out for under $25 and thought that was a HUGE price to pay for a meal!!!
Guess you are right..its where you live. and what you will tolerate....

Night - that's only £20 - and in London you would have to pay that and some for a good breakfast! It all depends on where you live - I live the opposite side of the country from London - and things are still expensive as I am in the Cotswolds! Breakfast at the local hotel would not be much under $40 / £20 per person..... It's what I spend in a week on food - I was asked to go for lunch at a pub nearby - and that was £15.50 - = $31 JUST FOR ONE MEAL!! I said I couldn;t afford it as that was the equivialent to my weeks food in 1 go....

So it all depends on where you are and what kind of meal you are looking at!

Thanks for all the great ideas. I guess if I'm eating to enjoy quality food, then the buffet is NOT the place to go. Unless, of course, I'm at a fancy hotel buffet. But, I usually avoid places that are $40+ for breakfast. Even I can't eat enough to feel that those are a good deal. I know part of it is this shoppers mind-set that says we should always be looking for bargains and deals. I think that's drummed into everyone in our consumer society from a very young age. Maybe I what would work for me is changing my mindset from feeding me and my family cheaply to investing in high quality foods for our health.

just always do a double take - how well was it prepared? How many hours has it been sitting there? is it actually hot enough to kill germs or is it at the temp to GROW MORE!

Just think of all the worst things that could have happened to that food before it got to you - and in a short time you will not be eating them!!!

you have to talk to yourself and start looking in cold reality at the food - take McDonaldsa- you neversee they way they process the food or cook it - but I know that lots of things go on the floor and the back on the grill and out to the customer.... yuck

Anything you cannot see being made and put in front of you assume the worst things that have happened to it - someone coughed over your pizza, someone sneezed all over those appitisers - your fizzy drink - how clean are the pipes and when they refilled are you sure no one peed in the filler?

I know it sounds really disgusting, but friends of my daughter have worked in places like the above and the things that they say they have seen (and then quit) is awful - so next time you think about getting all you can eat - just stop and think why are they giving away SO MUCH FOOD??? WHAT IS WRONG WITH IT?????? HOW WAS IT PREPARED?

It might just stop you going...

Wow! You hit me where I live! I used to be offended to go to a place where you only got 1 plate of food. My sisters and I would laugh that we weren't getting our monies worth. Thank God that thinking is fading and fading fast! Stinkin' thinkin' no more!

What usually works for me is I tell myself "It's not worth it. I worked too hard to ruin it with one meal." That usually does it for me. Just avoiding those places is the main thing though. I love Chinese buffets so I just try to avoid them.

The way I broke myself of this thinnking is ... I just don't go to any buffets any more. If we go out to eat, we make sure it is a place where we can order off the menu and we try to pick a place that has heart healthy food. I'm like an addict or alcholic ... if I get off the wagon just once I think I will be off for good. So I just don't tempt myself. And besides I tell myself, "my stomach has shrunk that there is no possible way that I could eat the amount of food that I paid for"!! (LOL)

Good luck to all of us.

It's REALLY REALLY hard to break this type of thinking. I kind of talked myself out of it by thinking that if there was a really excellent sale on poop, I probably wouldn't rush out and buy a bunch. OK, that's weird, but whatever.

The point is, I had to learn to waste some food (throwing away 3/4 of a bag of chips that I realized I had no control over). I had to learn that if I didn't waste that food, then the other option was for it to go on my body and I didn't need that either.

That aside, buffets and potlucks and, heaven help me, open bars, are tricky. I finally had to realize that the first bite of something is the best. So if I have a wide array of "all you can eat" foods, I first don't bother to put stuff on my plate that I can get anytime - french fries, lousy pizza, etc.

Second, anything that is special, I put 1 tsp worth on my plate. I might have 10 bites on my plate at the end, give or take. If something is truly amazing, I might go back for a few more bites.

And if I take a little nibble of something and it's not truly fabulous, I don't even finish that bite. Those calories have got to be worth it.

It's such a mental game.

What is the deal with this twisted thinking I have? I think that I need to get the maximum amount of value for my money. So, if I pay one price to eat at a buffet, I want to eat not just enough to get my money's worth, but MORE than my money's worth. If I have coupons for fast food, I'm much more likely to go and buy food I don't need to be eating.

I'm trying to figure out what's really behind this. Even knowing I have this problem, when I hear "all you can eat," I get really excited - like a little kid at Christmas.

Can anyone relate? I know I need to really change this thinking so I don't get the emotional reaction to "free" food that drags me down.
