Haven't been here because it's been like talking to myself, but I probably ought to put a wrap-up on this thread. I ran a PR at the Rochester Half, 1:30:18 net time. Got the 4th piece of the medal. Bling for the series:

I probably won't bother putting other running stuff into this group, because apparently no one is interested.

The MVP Rochester Half (and full) Marathon is coming up next Sunday. That will be the final leg of the Four Seasons Challenge, and I'll get the last piece of the 4-part medal. My recovering ankle is nearly 100%, and I'm confident I'll be able to run this one as a race. A PR might or might not happen. The weather is supposed to be good, but the course is different from courses I've run before. I don't know how the initial 5 miles of downhill followed by 5 miles of mostly uphill then 3 miles of down and up will affect my total time. The tentative plan is to take that first 5 miles fast, and accept being slower on the rest of the course.

When I signed up for it, the Four Seasons Challenge looked like a major goal. Right now, running that last half marathon looks a bit like a footnote. Along the way, my running buddies pushed me into running the Buffalo Marathon. I did well at Buffalo. As a result, this week much of my attention has been focused on registration for the 2016 Boston Marathon. I'm in, so now it's time to come back to earth and take care of business like running the MVP Rochester Half and completing the Four Seasons Challenge.

Ran SummerFest 12K yesterday, a traditional tune-up for the Rochester Half. This was something of a test of my left ankle, which is recovering from a sprain. The ankle allowed me to run the 12K as a race, though I didn't push as hard as I would for a major goal race.

Ran the Shoreline Half last Saturday, in miserable humidity. Was disappointed with my time of 1:36:27, until I saw how badly others were affected by the weather. Finished 22nd overall out of 828 finishers, and 2nd in my age group behind a better runner; but ahead of everyone older than me.

Saturday's blog written before I fully appreciated how bad the running conditions really were:

3 of the 4 half marathons for the Four Seasons Challenge are now in the books. I asked, and there will be no official calculation of total series overall or age group ranking. That's a minor disappointment, because I think the people in my age group who finished ahead of me at Spring Forward and Shoreline aren't doing the full series.

Race day today. Up early, it's 34 with a forecast of 38 at gun time. I'm as ready as I'm going to be, and I'll see how the half goes.

Started taper week toward Sunday's Flower City Half by cutting back to 15 miles Saturday, then only 5 miles Sunday. The serious part of the taper started yesterday evening, with an easy 4 miles. Two more runs of an easy 4 miles, then the race.

Taper is going to drive me nuts, just like always. Those short easy runs feel like I'm not doing much. But it works. By Sunday, I should be ready to run hard for a half.

Winter Warrior Half is today. I'm psyched. The online site shows 1156 people registered, and I don't know how many more will sign up at the site today.

10 days to the Winter Warrior Half, the first of the four.

Tomorrow will be my last speed workout, in the form of the 7.5 mile Resolution Run at Mendon Ponds. If anyone else is interested, online registration has closed but you can register on site tomorrow between 8:15 and 9:30 or so. Gun time is 10:00, with an early start of 9:45 offered for people who think they're slow.

Next week will be taper toward Winter Warrior. I'm thinking an easy 4 miles on Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday. It will drive me nuts.

I'm running with a pace group out of Fleet Feet on Saturdays through early January, instead of taking the full training program. My pace group is small because I run at 8:00 to 8:30 for my slow runs; most times it has been just me and the pace leader. We're kind of lax about the precise pace when it's just us, but stick closer to 8:30 when we have others. Last week it was just me, as my pace leader was off in Florida doing an iron man tri.

I'm contemplating the Fleet Feet store to store run on Sunday 11/23. There probably won't be pace leaders, but there should be a nice crowd to mingle with before and after.

As long as I can avoid further injury, I'm not worried about the distance for Winter Warrior. The open question is how competitive I can be, and how I manage myself into an evening race instead of a morning race. I'll figure it out by January 10.

Your training and patience as your fracture healed, will be paying off. Good luck on the Winter Warrier race and have you tried any of the Rochester running meetups? They're quite active and very social too.

Four half marathons, one in each season. I know the running community in Rochester and the Spark community don't have much overlap, but I thought I'd start a thread here anyway.

I signed up for this one on September 25. Along about now, I'm beginning to believe I'll be ready to treat the Winter Warrior half as a race, as opposed to viewing it as a training exercise.
