I picked up one of the Quick Reads (impulse display) books at the library--the newest novel by Jill Shalvis, Almost Just Friends. Character-driven family drama/romance, it's completely pulled me in; I just can't stop reading!

I gave up on my last book--boring!--so I was hoping my next book would be better . . . and it's amazing! A juvenile fiction book--that I consider more YA, with a 13-year-old protagonist: a black girl living in Mississippi in 1955. The conditions are heartbreaking, but she is so matter-of-fact about it. I'm just a little ways into it, but extremely compelling! Oh, the title is Midnight Without a Moon, by Linda Williams Jackson. It's a glorious debut novel!

Finished my bus and work book, Ice Dogs, by Terry Lynn Johnson. Really good, about a young teen girl musher in Alaska who finds an injured city boy while out with her dog team, and they get lost and have many hair-raising adventures trying to get home. Very intense and exciting!

I absolutely LOVED The Unteachables by Gordon Korman! It's not only about a group of misfit students, but also a burnt out teacher trying to skate out the year until early retirement who gets assigned to them. I almost missed my bus stop yesterday afternoon, because I was at a very tense section. Two mornings in a row, it had me laughing so loud, I may have disturbed coworkers. And I had to wipe away the tears when I finished it this morning just before my shift started. I *highly* recommend this one!

I love storytelling that creates characters you care deeply about and enjoy watching them grow, struggle, evolve, and triumph. I've discussed Nora's latest trilogy and what I love about Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, which I just finished, in the chat thread. And now I've returned to the last 3 books by Faith Hunter. In Dark Queen, Jane Yellowrock has met her brother, another skinwalker who was born on the Trail of Tears after she was forced to change into a bobcat and left in the snow to escape the soldiers--as a child of 5.

I love reading, but, unfortunately, my disability makes my eyes tire more quickly, so I work on the computer all day and then just depend on tv for my entertainment, because I don't have to focus as much and can listen with my eyes closed if I need a rest (but, I can't listen to audio books because they just put me to sleep lol).

Anyway, I saw all the memes for years about The Walking Dead, and finally realized it was on Netflix, so I just finished watching all 9 seasons available there.
My next watch will probably be Fear The Walking Dead.

Before that, I watched The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.
And After Life with Ricky Gervais.
The Mandalorian and Duck Tales (original and new) with my sons.
Before that, Star Trek: Discovery and Stargate: Atlantis

Being unemployed most of the past 18 months and being sick and broke, means I've watched A TON of tv. Catching up on years worth of movies and tv shows.

Just barely began another library impulse display, which will be my bus and work book this week: The Curious Heart of Ailsa Rae by Stephanie Butland, about a young woman who gets a heart transplant. I only read a few pages while in line at the store today, and I think I'm going to really enjoy it. More to come . . .

I've restarted my Harry Potters, about 3/4 through #1, The Sorcerer's Stone. Such fun! emoticon

Started a new book on the bus today: Get A Life, Chloe Brown by Talia Hibbert, who has written interracial romances prior to this chick lit book. It is absolutely delightful, I giggled through most of my bus ride home. emoticon Helen Hwang, who wrote The Kiss Quotient and The Bride Test has a testimonial quote on the front cover, which is unfortunately covered up by the library barcode. I highly recommend it.

Just wanted to share a quote I enjoyed from Circle of the Moon, the newest Soulwood novel by Faith Hunter, set in the Jane Yellowrock universe. It's a conversation between the main character Nell (a twenty-something magical being with plant and earth affinities, who escaped a polygamous cult at age 12) to her younger sister Mindy (12 or 13, same magical potential, still in the cult), of whom Nell is seeking custody.
"That's very Machiavellian of you, sister mine."
"That sounds like a dirty word, but if'n I get a greenhouse outta that, then I'm okay with it."

Nora Roberts' next book, The Rise of Magicks, comes out on November 26--Tuesday. I finished rereading the first book in the trilogy, Year One (very reminiscent of Stephen King's The Stand) this morning, and began the second book, Blood and Bone. Hoping to finish it Monday night, then I will pick up the brand new one Tuesday after work. This is not a romance series, but a moving tale of people, magical and "muggles," who struggle to rebuild after a plague, fighting both magical and non-magical forces of evil. Strong stuff, strong characters--excellent reading!

I've been enjoying reading one book or series at home, then a different one at work and on the bus. A recent cute one from my library impulse display ('Choice Reads') was Love at First Like. Featured a twenty-something in New York who built her business largely through social media, so it was a culture I'm not familiar with, but it was light and fun. Oh, the author was Hannah Orenstein.

I finished the final Soulwood novel last night--there was so much I had forgotten! I read all the Jane Yellowrock short stories and novels, and I'm still #23 in line, though they just got their 2nd order in and processed. They had first order 6 or 8, but when they got over 30 requests, they added the other number for a total of 14, but the second group hadn't arrived. So it could be a while yet.

I checked on the release of the 3rd Nora Roberts novel in her Chronicles of the One series, her first anthology released in hardcover, and it's coming out 11/26. So I'll start book #1, Year One, tonight. They came out a full year apart, not usual for her series, so I definitely want to remember all that happened before reading the new--and I think final--one in the series.

I started a new book today by Abbi Waxman, The Garden of Small Beginnings, and I love it. I was laughing out loud on the first page, and several times at work and on the bus, had a hard time stopping the giggles, where it got hard to read the words through the tears. Highly recommended!

I absolutely adored this book, and just requested her earlier 2 novels. I'm lucky I found this on the Choice Reads display, since the regular copies are all spoken for! There were copies available for the other two--The Garden of Small Beginnings and Other People's Houses, but a waiting list for the new one, The Bookish Life of Nina Hill: 128 people in line for 47 copies!

[Oops, forgot to post this on the SAssies yesterday] I'm giggling my way through the absolutely charming The Bookish Life of Nina Hill by Abbi Waxman. An unusual, social awkward, very intelligent heroine. I'm enjoying it immensely!

I finished Sharon Draper's Fire from the Rock, a fictional novel taking place in Little Rock in 1957 when Central High School was integrated by federal law, adamantly protested by the governor of Arkansas and white racists. The historical details were so rich, and the human stories so heartbreaking. An excellent book!

I really enjoyed California Girls by Susan Mallery. It was funny in places, and the sisters face many challenges that change them. Here are some of my favorite quotes:

"Starting over isn't easy, even when it's the right thing to do."
"That's true, but if you don't start over, you stay stuck where you are. Sometimes that's worse."

"Your feelings are the ones that matter. As long as you're a victim, you're losing."

"Honest to God, she had no idea what she would do, but she was determined to be stronger than she had been. ... Because she was so tired of feeling broken."

"Being the injured party is an easy trap. If you spend too much time feeling sorry for yourself, you never act."

"Most people avoided the difficult and painful until it was forced upon them."

"She'd been forced t grow as a person. The process had sucked, but she hoped she was better than she had been."

And on a lighter note:

"He liked her the way people liked cucumbers. They were acceptable and innocuous. She was like a cucumber."

[texts between one of the sisters and her mom] "You're killing me, Zennie. Right now, I'm lying here dead.
"Night, Mom.
"Dead people can't text."

I'm well into the sequel to A Discovery of Witches, Shadow of Night. This one has the witch and vampire couple time traveling back to 1590 where they interact with all sorts of historical figures in England and Prague. A little slow to start, but very intriguing.

I've been watching episodes of Elementary season 6. I enjoy the intelligent scripts and the platonic professional and personal relationship between Sherlock and Joan (Watson). Do you watch the show? There was a dark story arc with a creepy serial killer, but the last episode with Joan thinking of adopting a child was sort of sweet. Funny to think about the possibility of a misanthropic "Uncle" Sherlock, but because he likes her more than anyone else in his life, his support for her is quite touching.

I just finished the latest book in the series (released this past Tuesday) Wild Country, and have already begun to reread it. Another emoticon installment in a fantastic series! I frequently laughed out loud while reading, and teared up a couple of times, too. I truly am in awe of Anne Bishop's writing.

It turns out that was Kelly's debut children's book. It was good. I'm reading another juvenile fiction chapter book with illustrations that I'm loving: A Whole New Ballgame, by Phil Bildner. It's in a series named after the 2 protagonists, friends who have just started 5th grade, Rip and Red. The guy next to me on the bus home asked what I was reading, since I kept laughing out loud. While funny, it also has some depth. Red is high level autistic (I thought he was just OCD), and Rip is not happy he's been paired with a sourpuss girl in a wheelchair for an extended assignment. I found this on the impulse display, and just now requested the next 3 books in the series. It's a fast read, and fun!

I really enjoyed An Easy Death (it's what gunnies wish each other on parting), hope the next installment comes out in less than a year! I think this had a 2018 release, not sure which month.

Speaking of release dates, Ann Bishop and Patricia Briggs are finally not coming out on the same day! Wild Country, the upcoming novel about The Others (out in the Western town of Bennett which is being resettled after the humans were eliminated by the Elders in answer to the massacre of the Wolves), is still being released on the first Tuesday in March as usual, but the new Mercy Thompson book isn't coming out until early May. I can understand that after losing her husband suddenly, Patty probably took longer to return to the next manuscript.

I'm now reading a juvenile fiction book by the author of The Girl Who Drank the Moon, Kelly Barnhill. That was pure fantasy, while this is also magical, but about real places, a kid who's uprooted from San Francisco and sent to relatives in Iowa; it's The Mostly True Story of Jack.

Blessed Be, Amanda

The new Charlaine Harris series is Gunnie Rose, set in an alternate history where the US fell apart after FDR was assassinated & the Depression hit. Canada & Mexico each claimed territory and the Indian tribes took back land; what was left broke into smaller nations. Lizbeth Rose is a gunnie, a gunslinger who gets hired to provide protection. It's vastly entertaining & readable. I'll finish it tonight or tomorrow.

I'm getting near the end of The All You Can Dream Buffet, and absolutely loving it. The only downside to these stand alone novels by Barbara O'Neal is that I wish she'd write more about these engaging characters. I come to care about them, and want to know what else happens in their lives, and just hang out with them!

Took a break yesterday from my shapeshifter urban fantasy series and the murder mysteries set in Quebec and read two excellent juvenile fiction books about the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II.

"Sylvia & Aki" by Winifred Conkling alternates between the stories of real life girls--Aki Munemitsu who is "relocated" to Arizona with her family, and Sylvia Mendez whose family leased their farm during the war. When Sylvia and her brothers are told they can't attend the nearby school, but must go to the "Mexican" school further away, her father ends up suing the school board in Orange County, California. The case drew the attention of Thurgood Marshall and others who took the school segregation issue nationwide in Brown vs. the Board of Education in 1954. A fascinating intersection of two large social issues of the time.

"The Fences Between Us" is a fictional diary of a young teen "PK" (preacher's kid) whose older brother joins the navy a little before Pearl Harbor & whose father ministers to the large Japanese community in Seattle, who are all sent to a camp in Idaho--where he eventually follows, towing his unhappy daughter. There are so many rich details of the time, with both heartbreak and humor. I loved it! (And hope my 'niece' will too when it arrives.)

Oh, and I liked the closing lines in the final short story in the Jane Yellowrock collection, Blood in Her Veins, from "Bound No More" which focuses on her precocious and powerful witch goddaughter, Angelina: "But for now we were all safe and alive, and tomorrow had come with a golden dawn and a chance for a future for all of us. There wasn't much more I could ask of life."

Just finished book #7 in the JY series, and found a couple more great quotes:

"The gift of wisdom can be found, if one wishes to search for it, and is willing to be altered by it. It is not a gift given without cost or transformation" (by Aggie One Feather, Jane's sometime Cherokee shaman mentor).

And Jane reflecting on a long buried horrible memory from childhood, "I've let it run my thoughts, my plans, my whole life. But the experience doesn't own me. I own it. What I do with it is up to me."

Those were from Black Arts. Then came the short story "Off the Grid." I'm glad she has her story anthology, Blood in her Veins, arranged chronologically with some notes on when they take place in the timeline of the novels. This one introduced a character who has her own series that debuted in 2016: Nell is part human, part magical being of some kind, who was raised and abused on a cult compound, who has been living as a recluse. Jane get intel from her to free a hostage vamp, and allows law enforcement to liberate 138 abused children. Jane also plants the seed that maybe she can use her gifts in powerful ways to make a difference. I'll be intrigued to check those 2 or 3 out soon.

Just finished book #6, Blood Trade. More Biblical vamp origin stuff, more Native American shamanistic magic. Jane gets help from an unlikely fellow--a rather traditional preacher, who blesses hundreds of gallons of baptismal water for fighting super-vamps. She wasn't sure he'd agree to help save witches, including a friend, but he surprises her with this quote:
"I have a daughter who is a lesbian and married to her witch partner for the last fifteen years. My wife and I lost her years ago through misunderstanding and judgmental attitudes and sheer, blind stupidity. I am no longer so foolish to think God sees her lifestyle with greater ire than he does my judgments."

Aside from the thrilling action, there's a lot of relationship challenges and character evolution, moral struggles, as well as humor. I really do recommend them.

Lake Silence was fantastic! I read it twice this weekend, since picking it up after work Friday evening. It was odd to read a story set in the same universe as the first 5 books by Anne Bishop about the Others and the blood prophets, but not set in the Lakeside Courtyard. There are mentions of a few characters in Lakeside who are known to characters in the new book, but you meet completely new human and Other (shifter, vampire, Elder, Elemental) characters who are fascinating and real & you want to know more about.

It sounds, from her website, like the next Bishop book will be set in Bennet, a frontier town with links to the Lakeside Courtyard, which will be fun. And I now want to know what happens next for not just the Lakeside folks, but for all the characters around Lake Silence, the Jumble & the town of Sproing. I cannot recommend these books strongly enough! They are truly emoticon emoticon

Yesterday I finished Debbie Macomber's Any Dream Will Do--it was nice. Today I picked up her holiday novel for 2017 from the library. I'm enjoying it very much, and just may finish it tonight!

I got a huge surprise when I checked my email today, and saw a reply to a question I posted on author Anne Bishop's website about geographical correspondences in her The Others series--from Anne herself! Since I had asked back in October, I really hadn't expected an answer. She wrote: Not all the towns/cities have a corresponding place in our world, but
the ones that do would be:

Toland -- New York City
Lakeside -- Buffalo
Great Island -- Grand Island
Talulah Falls -- Niagara Falls
Tinseltown -- LA

I already had figured out Toland, Talulah Falls and Tinseltown, but kept wondering about Lakeside, where most of the action takes place. I had considered Chicago, given how cold it is described, and being on one of the Great Lakes, but then mention was made of Shikago, so I thought 'Nope, must be somewhere else.'

Actually her next novel, coming out in early March won't be set in Lakeside, and may not feature any of the characters I've come to love, though it will be set in the same universe. The one after that is planned to be set in Bennet, out west, where we've met a few characters. I can't wait to read the new ones, and have been thinking about rereading her present 5, because they are just so wonderful.

I finished the DVD of A Christmas Carol: The Concert. I highly recommend it. Very faithful, with plenty of quoting from the original story. And the musical numbers are varied and engrossing, from the tender ballads--Belle bidding a young Ebeneezer farewell in the past, and Bob remembering the late Tiny Tim in the future--to the rousing gospel finale that had the audience on their feet. A few very talented actor/singers, especially the fellow who played all four ghosts.

I just picked up Elementary Season 5 from the library this evening. I love the storytelling and the intelligence of this series.

I picked up a few kids holiday books at the library. My favorite was "Here Comes Santa Cat" by Deborah Underwood. Funny story and pictures--I especially loved the Naughty/Nice pie chart! Ah, math humor! emoticon It's a picture book, so a very fast read, and recommended to make you laugh.

I also found in my library system and reserved A Christmas Carol, The Concert on DVD. It's a dramatic reading with songs, and very enjoyable so far. I especially liked the (bluesy?) lament by Marley's ghost, "I wear these chains." Only downside, there's no subtitles or closed captioning, and the background chorus providing musical exposition is difficult to make out. But the main characters and the narrator are miked project very well.

I regularly take time to read, often breaking it into timed sessions between other tasks and chores. But this weekend I checked the most recent season of Call the Midwife again, and have been watching beautifully told stories that touch my heart. I adore spending time with some of my favorite characters on television.

Since I don't know where my Nook is--I've never really figured out how to use it--I was reading that ebook on my laptop. So I was thrilled when an ILL (InterLibrary Loan) book came in--so much easier to handle! Finished the 2 books in between, but found the next to last chronologically in the series (in book form) had mysteriously disappeared from the collection in the few weeks since I last read it! I put in another ILL request, but just checked out the ebook of The Serpent on the Crown. I already have the very last one, The Tomb of the Golden Bird, waiting for me. That one takes place in 1923 (the series began in the late 1800s) w/ the discovery of King Tut's tomb. The posthumously published The Painted Queen (which came out this year) went back to before WWI with the discovery of the bust of Nefertiti. (Her publishing out of story chronological order got quite confusing until I discovered that site that lists books in order--both publishing and chronological.)

In the meantime, I've been reading in a fun Debbie Macomber book, Choir of Angels, with 3 Christmas tales of those Christmas angels of hers, Shirley, Goodness, and Mercy. Sometimes silly, but sweet.

I finished The Christmas Room, a new romance by Catherine Anderson--very sweet. And I was surprised to have the ebook of the next Amelia Peabody book come in. So I don't need to borrow my sister's pad on which she downloaded her library's ebook for me. (Thanks again, Mary!) So I'm 2 pages into Lord of the Silent (and fading fast!)

Oh, and I'm watching a few of the bonus features on the Nanny McPhee DVD.

I finished He Shall Thunder in the Sky by Elizabeth Peters, and now have to take a break since I want to read them in chronological (not published) order, and my system has no book copies of the next one, Lord of the Silent. I've requested the ebook, but don't know when it will be available. I've also requested an Inter-Library Loan and a purchase, since it's not good to be missing a single title out of a 20-book series! My sister is also checking her system to see if they have a copy available.

Tonight I'm watching Nanny McPhee--rather odd; not sure how much I like it. It's strange to see Emma Thompson looking so unattractive. True, she was quite homely as Professor Trelawney in the Harry Potter movies, but the warts and buck tooth are rather over-the-top. Though the blemishes are disappearing as the children learn their lessons and transform.

for Amelia's page, and the site www.bookseriesinorder.com/ Hope these work!

I'm really glad the Amelia Peabody page not only listed the books in order of publishing, but the chronological order also. Not sure why she started jumping around over more than a decade to the war years, before the war, after the war, before the war. Rather disconcerting. I was planning to leave the newest book until after finishing the last several she published, but found out there are 6 books that take place in later years. So I'll read that soon (plus I read some not so great reviews; evidently the writer who worked from her notes has a much different style). Then I'll read the various titles (some read years ago, some never yet) up to the last chronological one which takes place in 1923--evidently the year King Tut's tomb was discovered. I guess it was a huge find to discover an intact tomb which had not been raided in antiquity.

The Amelia Peabody books are cozy mysteries featuring a female archeologist/Egyptologist, which start in the late 1800s and eventually move into the 1900s, including WWI and the rise of Egyptian nationalism. They are entertaining. I'm not sure who wrote the just-released one, since the original author died a few years ago. As relationships change substantially, it definitely helps to read them in order. I believe the first is The Crocodile on the Sandbank.

Actually here is a link to the series. Are you familiar with the site Books Series in Order? Pretty cool! www.bookseriesinorder.com/am

On the page it talks about the characters and her style, and mentions she was working on the new book when she passed away in 2013.

I just finished the 5th and most recent novel in the Others series by Anne Bishop--tense, disturbing, but ultimately sweet and joyful. Her next one comes out in early March, and is set in the same universe (alternate history), but a different location and characters. Can't wait to return, but I will miss my favorite Wolves, Crows, Bear & Coyote, humans, blood prophets, Intuits, Elementals & Sanguinati.

Next I'll be rereading (or reading for the first time) the last few Amelia Peabody books by Elizabeth Peters before her death. A new one has been released, and I have it on order at the library; may come in soon. It's been some years since I read any of them, so want to get reacquainted.

It's worth getting the Hidden Figures DVD from your library for the extra features on the real Katherine Johnson--who is still alive at 97, who received a Presidential award from Barack Obama, and who was honored by having the center where she worked for NASA named for her. I've started rewatching with the commentary by director and lead actress, who are interesting to listen to so far.

Finished it last night--it was great! And I'm really pleased this DVD has special features. (I was disappointed when Arrival finally came in to check out of the library, with no features at all; it was a fascinating story & I would have enjoyed learning more about the creation of it.) Saw the first, which really delved into the hidden history of these black women and their contributions to the early space race. Looking forward to the other 2, and to checking out the audio commentary to see it one more time before returning it.

Blessed Be, Amanda

Watching Hidden Figures, which finally came in (after starting over 2000th in line), and really enjoying it!

I stayed up late finishing Others book #3, Visions in Silver last night. I think I'll go ahead and reread #4 & 5 before starting back in on the last few Amelia Peabody Egyptian mysteries written before author's death, in preparation for the newly released book in the Elizabeth Peters series, which I've requested from the library. I'm not sure who wrote this one, or if there will be more.

Read Naomi Novik's short story collection set in the Temeraire universe. My favorite was Dragons and Decorum, featuring Captain Elizabeth Bennet & the cast of characters from Pride and Prejudice.

Almost finished with Uprooted which I began today, a fantasy novel by Naomi Novik in a completely different universe, and if anything, even better written (at least not in the early nineteenth century style, and therefore more accessible). I don't know if it will truly end, or if it is the beginning of a new series. Highest recommendation!

I think I'll have to stay up & finish League of Dragons, book #9 tonight. It is so exciting & tense, I'm loving it, but I'll be sad to finish the series. I care so very much for the characters, and will miss them greatly.

Each of the Temeraire novels is divided into three parts. I'm on Part III of book #8. It's so addictive. I care about the human and dragon characters so much and can't wait to learn what happens to them all next!

I finally got one of my DVDs from the library--Passengers, for which I had seen previews at the theater. Not sure how far I am into the movie, but it's rather boring. It set things up pretty quickly, but then his angsty "I'm all alone on this ship for the next 90 years" became rather uninteresting, and now they are dragging out "Should I wake her up or not? Yes. No. Yes. No." Sorry but I'm starting not to care. Not sure if I'll finish it or not. Think I'll go back to my book over dinner.

On Facebook, I found a link listing different books set in medieval times. I saved it to look at later since I enjoy reading such historical fiction books sometimes. Sounds like you’ve enjoyed reading those two books set in that period of time. I finished reading The dark horse by Craig Johnson, a great book set in modern age Wyoming and another book by Elaine Viets. She writes cozy mysteries.

Well, Book #6, which I borrowed from Mary through her county's library system yesterday is already finished. (I think it was a little shorter than the others. Now I'm on to Book #7, Crucible of Gold. I wonder if author Naomi Novik set out originally to take human Lawrence and dragon Temeraire all over the world? The first book is set at sea and in Britain, #2 is mostly in China, #3 has them traveling overland from China to Europe, including spending time in Turkey, #4 takes them to Africa, #5 is back to Europe and Britain, with Napoleon invading England, #6 is in Australia, and now #7 has them going to South America!

Here's the marvelous Wikipedia article on the series: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Temera
ire_(serie
s)
I guess it's time to request #9; I already have #8 waiting!

I just finished Book #5, Victory of Eagles, both funnier at the beginning and more harrowing by the end with a huge battle between the English and French Forces. I'm curious about the real history of the time, and the exploits and ends of the real Bonaparte, Nelson & Wellington. The story ends on a somewhat sad, yet wide open note for the next book.

I read Dan Brown's DaVinci Code and Angels and Demons, and love the movies too. I love those kinds of thrillers for sure and also cozy mysteries. I haven't gotten into fantasy lately but if I get recommendations, I may read some fantasy stories. Right now I am reading eight books at once (I know, I know) and having fun. Reading is an escape for me and watching good movies.

I haven't tried Preston and Child, though have considered them. Do you read James Rollins? I thoroughly enjoyed Dan Brown's DaVinci Code and Angels and Demons. Rollins does similar work--intelligent political thrillers that draw from history and cutting edge science, though his characters have more depth (or as I like to say, he writes like a woman--in terms of character development and relationships) and he always has a supernatural element involved.

I just started a new series based on a 6-Pack recommendation: His Majesty's Dragon by Naomi Novik. It's the first in a series of alternate history fantasy novels in which the Napoleonic War is fought with each side having an aerial corps of dragons and riders. I'm not quite halfway and absolutely loving it!

Hi Amanda! The first in the series is called "The Cold Dish". There is a spiritual undertone to the series that's based on Native American culture. I really enjoy that. This is my second time through the series.

I am now reading 8 books at the same time. emoticon Can't help myself. My mind is always racing and I get bored easily. Going from book to book is like watching different shows at the same time. Keeps my mind sharp too since I have to keep track of all the characters. emoticon

I have read a couple from Debbie Macomber and have finished books whose ending was the pits. I can't remember if I went on reading books from that author or not. Another author that's tricky for me is Preston & Child. Some of their books blew me away and some I couldn't finish. So.... I just keep trying.

Finished book 3 today--very satisfying! Not sure what I want to read next. I picked up the newest No. ! Ladies Detective Agency book, but missed the one before that, and am waiting for it to come in. May breeze through another NR trilogy in the meantime while I wait.

I finished Debbie Macomber's If Not for You--which was very enjoyable until the end, when it just sort of bumbled to a stop. It's rare that I read a book and have the reaction of "That's it? Seriously?" at its conclusion.

Decided to reread the Boonsboro Inn trilogy by Nora Roberts; am about halfway through the first book with Beckett and Claire. Lizzie the ghost has barely made a cameo so far.

I may try him. Is it important to start with the first book? If so, what's the title that begins the series?

I finished all the Patty Briggs books, though I read the final one twice. I had forgotten the twist at the end, and wanted to go back to review the foreshadowing of the reveal. Now enjoying Debbie Macomber's newest novel--light and fun.

Wow, Amanda! That's some kind of story! emoticon My mood changes and I read according to my mood. Right now I am into cozy mysteries and regular mysteries, and enjoying those. I love the author Craig Johnson who writes stories set in modern day western USA (Wyoming). The stories are wonderful and Netflix has a series called Longmire set from the books.

I'm deep in my Patricia Briggs, now on the most recent Alpha and Omega novel, where they go down to Arizona to buy Anna a horse, to discover a family member near death after an attack by the fae, and Charles Changes her to werewolf so that she might live. I enjoy having Leslie of the FBI show up to help. The characters Briggs creates are so wonderfully multi-dimensional, which adds such depth to the stories.
emoticon (pretend that's a wolf) emoticon (Chelsea, the woman changed is witchborn, which is why the pack Alpha considers killing her, since the Navajo tend to think of all witches as evil--thank goodness for Anna's Omega "superpowers"!)

I sometimes read young people's books too. I have a collection of children's books that I keep with me. My last two were "Freddy the Frogcaster and the Huge Hurricane" by Janice Dean. I was interested because we get big storms in Florida and I was wondering how she wrote the book for children about it. It is very good even though I would have written it a little bit different. The other is entitled "The Night of the Hurricane's Fury" by Candice Ransom and it is a little bit more realistic.

I just finished a book of Bruce Coville's that was completely new to me--Fortune's Journey, a young adult novel (everything else of his that I've read has been aimed at children). It centers on a young woman leading a troupe of actors as they journey to California on a wagon train. The idea for the story came out of Bruce's involvement with youth theater! It was a very good story, which I read in less than a day, around all my job hunt activities.

And despite having read it several times, it still brought tears of joy in a couple of sections.

It was tears of sorrow shed numerous times as I watched the final episode of Call the Midwife Season 5, in preparation for picking up Season 6 from the library today. The episode twined 2 main stories of the loss of a character who had been there for 5 seasons, and the discovery of a connection between a drug given widely for anxiety, sleeplessness and morning sickness and a number of births of deformed babies, often without limbs, and in one case without even identifiable gender. The horrible struggle with guilt by one of the mothers and by local physician who had prescribed the drug was heart wrenching. I know I've recommended this series often, and I just hope you can find it through your local library.

I went by the library after work to return several items including one due today. And I picked up the 4 books in Coville's Alien Adventure series: Aliens Ate My Homework, I Left My Sneakers in Dimension X, The Search for Snout, and Aliens Stole My Body, as well as a new to me book of his, Fortune's Journey, about a young woman traveling West on a wagon train in the 1800s.

But right now I'm thoroughly enjoying Autumn's Thorns about a spirit shaman who's just returned to her hometown in rural Washington (northern & coastal, I think).

Read the other book (not a sequel, all new characters) in Bruce Coville's Enchanted Files series, Hatched, about a griffin. It started rather slowly for me, but ended up being quite enjoyable. A third book in the series comes out sometime this year, Trolled. I've requested the 4 books in Bruce's Alien Adventures series from the 90s. Once the first book arrives, Aliens Ate My Homework, I begin rereading them. I read them aloud to my first class of 5th graders, some of whom really enjoyed them.

Starting a cozy mystery by Yasmine Galenorn writing as India Ink. I've also requested the new live action Beauty and the Beast, starring Emma Watson, who played Hermione in the Harry Potter movies. I'm #1916 in line for 129 copies. In other Potter movie news, when I looked up the cast of Call the Midwife on IMDb, I discovered to my amazement that Sister Evangelina, the tough-as-nails nun, is played by the actress who played Aunt Marge in HP #3, whom Harry inadvertently blew up (like a balloon--in fact she floated off into the sky).

Just found a new post-apocalyptic drama called "The 100".
Already halfway through season 2 and need to know what happens next.

Read a delightfully funny kid's book, Cursed, by Bruce Coville, about a (magical) Brownie who comes to these shores and brings an old country curse with him. The concluding Author Notes were a real hoot, with alternating snipes from "Angus" (the Scottish Brownie) and "the Coville" (who helped him edit and publish his journal).

Just finished watching Season 5 of Call the Midwife; waiting for Season 6 to come in. Read on IMDb that "Call The Midwife has recently been voted the Best Drama of the 21st Century in the BFI and Radio Times Festival Audience Poll." Wow! I know I absolutely *love* it!

Gave up on the Galenorn book The Changeling--just didn't like the characters enough to want to keep reading about them. Halfway through the second season of Call the Midwife. I was tearing up a short time ago over a very poignant scene. You come to care deeply about the characters and their challenges and triumphs.

Interesting: I gave up on this DB Frank novel as well. The characters, again, were quite wealthy, and I just didn't relate to them or care much about their lives. So I've begun a YA paranormal/ urban fantasy by Yasmine Galenorn, who wrote a mystery series I quite enjoyed featuring a witch.

I also picked up Season 1 of Call the Midwife, based on the memoirs of Jennifer Worth. I haven't read them, but might give them a try. Her words are voiced by Vanessa Redgrave, looking back to that time in the 1950s in the East End of London amid poverty, at a time when there was no popular birth control, and the nuns and midwives attended 80-100 births *every month* in their community! They also held prenatal clinics, home visits and other medical services as part of the National Health Service. Endearing characters, moving stories, laughter and tears. Another example of glorious storytelling which I cannot recommend highly enough.

I finished The Last Chance Olive Ranch. It alternated between action with China on the olive ranch, and her husband, McQuaid, who has a violent prison escapee gunning for him. Definitely exciting, with lots of luscious recipes at the end.

I'm planning to pick up the newest Dorothea Benton Frank novel, which finally arrived. I didn't finish the last one, because I was rather bored by it, whereas I've thoroughly enjoyed most of hers that I've read.

At some point, I'll read the newest James Rollins Sigma Force novel that I picked up at Costco a few months ago. I may try rereading that series, as I've pretty well forgotten where we are with some of the characters. He always has heart-stopping action, fascinating science & history, and usually with a bit of supernatural twist.

I finished rereading the amazing series of urban fantasy novels by Anne Bishop, beginning with Written in Red. It's hard to believe how good they are, how compelling the alternate reality she's created, and the characters who inhabit it.

I'm now reading the newest China Bayles mystery by Susan Wittig Albert, The Last Chance Olive Ranch.

I really hoped the new book would feature the same characters, as I really cared about them, and want to know what happens next in their lives. But the new novel, 'Forever, Again' deals with completely different folks and reincarnation. Not as compelling (as in "I just can't stop reading!") for me, but quite intriguing.
