My bedtime routine is normally lay out clothes for the next day, brush teeth, take meds, make & drink my magnesium/calcium mix to help with insomnia, check that the house is locked up & secure, then lotion up my feet and use mindfulness technique for a few minutes. Say goodnight to my hubby (if he isn't already asleep) then watch TV until I fall asleep.

It's funny that this challenge should come just now, as I'm away from home right now, caring for a sick relative, and have been very mindful of establishing new rituals to feel ordered and to take care of myself.

So my new bed-time routine, as of this week is to spend the last 30 minutes of my day as "me-time." I do my ablutions, then go to my room to listen to some mellow music, sniff some lavender or light a candle, rub yummy smelling lotion into my legs and feet, then read for pleasure for a few minutes. I've been sleeping much better than normal here, probably because I'm more exhausted than normal!

I'm Sue, and I won't let fear hold me back.

My personal bedtime routine starts typically around 9pm. I put on my PJ's, take my medication for night, have a snack because the one pill requires I do eat with it. I play on the computer either on Sparkpeple or Facebook, depending on the mood. When I start to get sleepy, between 10-11pm, I clean my teeth, wash my face and hands, go pee so I'm not up through the night if possible, read my Bible devotions and Psalms..if I'm still awake by this time :) and then I cuddle my teddy bear, say goodnight to my 3 stuffed kittens that represent the 3 cats I've had in the past and usually before I get this far I'm snoring away :)
If I cannot sleep by this time, I get out my Mindfulness Guided Meditations and they will, FOR SURE, put me to sleep.
Sometimes I journal before I head to clean my teeth if it has been a particularly stressful or busy day. Getting it out, relaxes me so the rest of my routine can go on as planned.

This works for me for now, but don't be surprised if down the road you may need to adjust your routine. As our bodies change, so do our needs in all ways.

Great hearing from you, please keep your bedtime routines coming! We can all learn from what you have to say! :)

JGMK55, what you have posted is right for you. There is no such thing as a WRONG bedtime routine. If what you wrote works for you, then that is your bedtime routine. It sounds like a good one and it is obviously working for you and THAT is all that matters. Thank you for sharing with us!

Leslie, I too wake up very early. If you have not talked with your doctor about it yet, perhaps you could ask about spending a night at a sleep study clinic. In case you don't know what it is, it's where you go, spend one night wired in all ways so that what happens during the hours you sleep can be recorded and suggestions made. I've had this test done 3 times now. When my mom had her test done, she not only found out she had Restless Leg Syndrome but Sleep Apnea. Since using the C-Pap machine, she sleeps much better and her legs have more good nights than bad nights.
So I understand fully waking up early. Have you tried to do something that would make you sleeping, such as doing a word search, flipping through a catalog or magazine? For me, I read the Psalms as they are relaxing to me.
Maybe it would be helpful to join the Official Sleep Challenge Team to see if you could find some ideas there.

Best wishes and your routine sounds like a great one! emoticon

I shut down my computer, and on Mondays watch 'House' which goes to 9 PM.
Then I take all my night time meds and make sure the cat has enough food and fresh water.
I get myself ready for bed, turning down my sheet and blanket before I brush my teeth etc.
I put my dirty clothes in the basket and know what I'm going to wear the next day.
I open my bedroom window, at least a crack, climb into bed and turn out the light.
I cuddle with my cat for 5-10 minutes and by then I'm usually asleep. I usually go to bed any time between 8 and 9, because I wake up early in the morning. (Sometimes I wake up much TOO early!)

I don't know if I do it "right" but after I wash my face, brush my teeth and get my night clothes on I spend about ten or fifteen minutes reading my Bible or devotional. I usually have glass of water next to my bed and try to get a few last sips in before I turn off the lights. My bedroom has no heat in it so is usually quite cool when I go to bed...which is good for me to sleep. If I can't fall asleep, I get up for a bit then go back to bed when I feel more drowsy. My bedtime is between 9:30 and 10:00 and I try to keep within that range.

One of the major components of staying stress free or of having less stress in our lives, is to have a regular bedtime routine. This thread is for you to post YOUR OWN bedtime routine and perhaps inspire somebody else with your ideas. If you do not have a bedtime routine, now is your chance to make one and put it to work so you have less stress each day. So, without further ado, what is your bedtime routine, OR what is your bedtime routine going to bed?
