When I started decluttering, I established a spot by the door to put items I would be tossing. As the kids came to visit they all learned if it was there and they wanted it, take it. Then every time I went shopping I would pack up what was there and drop it off. I no longer had to ask about things, and it worked great at the time, because they would all come by at least once a week to use the washer/dryer.

I'll stop too ..... maybe my son needs some plasticware. He's already said, "No thanks!" to a few things. It looks as Vinnies are going to be the winners .... or is that the losers?

I'm amused, Sandy - My mother scolds me for having such a cluttered house, and mails me magazine articles and newspaper clippings about how to clean, and puts them in a big box filled with leftovers of her house, stuff that I don't want! Since she met Flylady, though, she has stopped doing that, and I feel much more comfortable with her, praise God!

Ok, so I'm going to change the name of this thread so we keep using it to post our decluttering, and we'll start a new challenge.

I'm with you Jari and I think it is a good idea to keep the thread going so that when we do throw something on or out we can post.
My daughter said, "Mum, stop decluttering your house, you're cluttering mine."
And I thought I was helping.

I like having a place where I can post what I've decluttered, but I don't like feeling like I Have to declutter something every day and if I don't I'm bad/naughty. SO although I have enjoyed this this week, I don't want to continue having it as a challenge. I do want to keep a place where we can post decluttered things, though. Thanks! emoticon

Yesterday, my son dropped off our metals at a different recycling site, and I tossed old medications so that DH wouldn't pop the wrong pill while he was "UNDER THE INFLUENCE", lol.

Our week of decluttering is coming to an end, but I see yoou so motivated and enjoying it so much that I am wondering whether we should do it for another week.
Just let me know what you prefer!

It sounds as if we are all in the same boat. That's very comforting, don't you think. There is definitely a good side to doing it a little at a time because it, hopefully, will become a habit and we will just learn to do it all the time.

I live in hope!!

That's my feeling, too, Katty. I'm not concerned that I'm not tossing out bunches every day, and getting the whole place neat and clean and kept decluttered overnight. It didn't get this way overnight and I won't undo it overnight, either! Thanks for the encouragement!

Mrs Clutter gets in our homes in silent baby steps. Why wouldn't we get her out in baby steps too? BABY STEPS !
Well, in the past two days I tossed sevral bottles of different products from my bathroom and some more bags and rags and other stuff. I discovered things I had forgotten I had! And then I tossed half my medicine cabinet content!
Yesterday it was pieces of paper(brochures, etc), fridge magnets(I had about 10) and ,from my fridge, a BBQ sauce which had expired one year ago! I can't say this without emoticon

I forgot - I cleaned up in the back yard, and gathered a pile to put out front next week for the curbside pick-up. The yard looks a bit better, now!

Thanks, Cynthia - You reminded me that I need to get an appt for my daughter to get her wisdom teeth taken out. I'll have to do that tomorrow.

I didn't get much cleaning done today, as I was busy with unlocking my car (Please see my blog, thank you for the comments!) I did get rid of one item through Freecycle - the lady picked it up today, and I mailed two books for Paperbackswap SO I'm getting rid of the little things but not clearing off shelves like ya'll are. Babysteps, babysteps!

Well, my attempt today was unsuccessful. DH had a dentist appt., and we took our metals to be recycled, but the place was closed. They are now only open on Monday's and Tuesday's. So we did the appt., then the shopping, then packaged all the meats to freeze, (another big meat sale today, I'll be stocked for a few months now) then picked up his prescriptions, paid a couple of bills, got him a hair cut, and took care of a few other things he wanted to do before his surgery tomorrow. I'm glad I threw that chicken in the crockpot before we left. Now I'm tired, and I guess I'll just have to throw out 2 things tomorrow, lol. He gets his wisdom teeth out tomorrow, so his decluttering will be done for him, lol.

Managed to do another shelf in the pantry and now I have a pile of empty containers. I didn't realize how many coffee jars I was keeping. They have vacuum seals and I think I'll hand them on to my son for his new house.

I'm trying to keep quiet about it, even though I'm still trying to fly. Too often things from long ago get brought up here in this family, instead of forgotten. Sigh. I guess I had better be the first one to forget so others will copy me!

I mentioned flylady once when I first started, and got that raised eyebrow look from DH, so never mentioned it again until about 4 months into it, when my son mentioned something about his house and I told him to go visit her site. He gave me that raised eyebrow look too, and made a snide comment at which point my DH replied, "Don't open your mouth until you try it. If that's what she's using to get this done its well worth it." I never thought I'd here him say anything close to that, lol. Maybe you're just mentioning it more right now, and they just need a break.

I think my husband and family are kind of tired of Flylady, although he did use the rubba-scrubba to clean the vehicle, and they require that I get the calendar, and they Do say the house is looking better, so why be fed up with her?! I did get rid of an audio book today, and played with my kids, so I think I got rid of some bad feeling, some lonely feelings today :-)

That counts too, of course! Flylady says if you bring something home, one other things has to leave. So,that's exactly what you're doing!

We are having just too much fun with this decluttering.
I do have a confession. I bought a pair of shoes yesterday - so - I'm going to throw an old pair out today. Does that count? Since tidying the wardrobe there's a bit more room.
I think I've lost the plot!!!
Back to the pantry today. It's the liquor shelf today so I might have to go on to the next shelf as I don't think there will be much liquor to throw out!
Now the cake tins, well, that's another story.

LOL! Okay guys, the only reason I throw out more, is because my home has a revolving door, lol. DH emoticon brings it in, and I emoticon bring it out. We pass each other on the way. I'm just trying to learn to be FASTER emoticon than him, lol.

Today all I had time for was to cut the upc's from the 4 coffee bags, and 2 ziploc boxes that the school saves for redemption and put them in their place for me to send when school starts next month. And then of course I threw the bags and boxes in the trash. emoticon emoticon

Hi Fani!
The problem with trying hard is that it is too difficult!. LOL. That's why we set this challenge. We have Hurricane Cynthia (BANTAMOM)here who has motivated us to do a lot! I'm starting to think she's the team's power engine! But the challenge is to JUST TAKE ONE THING out of your house each day. Yesterday the one thing I could toss was an old pair of socks.
The beauty of the challenge is, generally, once you toss that first thing, you get a high- LOL- and want to do more!
Best of luck to your tossing today!

I've just realised we have a TRYINGHARD in our team, But Sandy is not difficult at all!

My son and his girlfriend stopped by for Dinner and to use my washer/dryer tonight, lol, and the conversation centered around decluttering. Just as my DH came inside, we were talking about the yard and hurricane season about to be in full swing. I had to laugh, because my ever faithful DH changed the subject to "What happened to the 5 ladders I had hanging on the fence?" This is the problem with too much stuff, you don't remember what you did with it. I couldn't answer him, because I just don't know. He loans them out, and then they are never there when we need them. I could account for the one we left at my mom's after boarding up her house last hurricane season, so that my son could stop by and take the boards down. I really don't care were they are as long as they are not here. Now that I think about it, they were probably put into the shed we can't get into last hurricane season.

I almost forgot, I did get in a little decluttering today, but I only had a few minutes so it barely shows. I did get to throw away 2 old blankets and collected some of my daughters things she left here on her last visit, so that she could remember to take them home when she comes tomorrow.

I'm trying so hard to declutter. My husband has learned to go through the trash!!! Most things are given away....and I find I don't miss anything. Once in awhile when I'm looking for something, I do wonder if I've given it away or lost it to re-organization! emoticon

Oh Cynthia! You have it harder than me. My husband does like to save things, but he also throws things out - usually mine! Our storage shed is filled, and we are actually renting a storage unit "for just 3 or 4 months" beginning about 3 years ago. I want to go through it and get rid of much. Alot in it though, belong to the children, who are all still at home and don't have places for the furniture and stuff their relatives have given them for their future new places. These are family heirlooms, like great grandmother's desk, and grandfather's desk, so I don't want to toss them. But bunches of the other things, like my daughters clothes from when she was in grade 5 - she's now 23! Everyone in my family complains about how much stuff "I" have, and why don't I get rid of it. Meanwhile, they are using my things all the time, and people on lists and all that I use to get rid of things say that they don't know how I could have anything left to pass on, as I'm always giving stuff away! I posted a breadbox that I really like to freecycle today, as the family refuses to use it, as well as some other items. We'll see if I get a thank you from anyone, besides myself :-)
Today I have been watching on YouTube the television show "How Clean is Your House?" These two ladies go into the house and they show the piles and dirt and trash, etc, and then they and their crew clean it. They give hints about safe and economical cleaners, and so on. They then show the clean house afterwards. It's giving me incentive to clean more, even though my house isn't close to the ones I've seen today! Instead, my house is cluttered. I need to get through bunches of this paper, these things to file, etc. I hope you manage to succeed with yours, also.

what a struggle!
I was a packrat too because I was brought up by a packrat. But after my first Flylady decluttering I saw the beauty and peace of getting rid of all those things you'll probably never use. I wasn't sure when I started, but I am most convinced now because I don't remember most of what I gave away and have not needed anything of what I remember was in those boxes. I also learnt that many times we don't even know we have something because we have not seen it in years and end up buying the same thing! So, why keep? Another thing I learnt from Flylady is that the things we have and never use belong to somebody else. That's the most beautiful thought and it helps me let go of stuff that is too good to end in the trash. If I know what I give away is what someone needs, I don't feel I am making poor use of what I have.
I guess I am a little packmouse now. LOL!

Wow Cynthia I thought my hubby was bad but yours is a real challenge. Mine likes to hoard magazines. When I laid the law down and said he could keep one years worth of his train magazines, he started hiding them. Now I find stacks of them under his bed, in cupboards I don't visit often and anywhere he thinks I won't find them. It's become a bit of a joke with us and since it's so important to him I let it go.
Today I have cleaned out all the old bottles of vitamins that the use by date had long gone on. No old medicines because we have a big campaign on finishing prescribed medicines here or we just make the bugs harder to kill the next time.
That's another shelf done and that means that since I did the other shelf yesterday that is one whole side of the pantry done, another two sides to go.

Most unfortuate for us - all three at home are packrats! A lot is sentimental stuff we ended up with from his folks who've passed on. Mine seems to be yarn, fabric and craft books and books of any type. DD is also packing stuff in-at least so far she is able to contain it in her room LOL. DH excuse for not taking care of the stuff in the office "Well I think its something you might want to help me decide on".

I guess I have outside (although in my house) influences keeping me from Just Doing. My husband is a packrat. As I clear space, he moves more stuff in. He saves EVERYTHING. Last year I threw away 8 tubes of caulking that had hardened, just to have him bring home 3 more the very next day for IN CASE. I got rid of a computer desk that was inadequate for our needs just to have him bring home an x-tra large office desk, that we had to take the legs off to get through the door. It's as big as a twin bed, and the biggest room in my home is the 12x14 livingroom. So we crammed it into the 12x12 bedroom, since it now has only 1 twin bed in it. I had to move a dresser and the other desk that was in there to fit it in. Now that 3 of the kids have their own homes, he has a room of his own, to junk up as much as he likes. It's only 8x8, so he can't wait for the next one to move out, because he thinks he'll get that room too, lol. As it is there is a single 2 ft. wide, 3.5 ft. long path from the door of his room to his chair, and thats it. Everything else is packed from floor to ceiling with junk. But we do have an agreement that if it overflows from his room to the rest of the house, it is free game, and I can throw it away, but I'm not allowed into HIS room, not even to clean. That's how the office got turned into office/storage/junk room. He snuck in behind my back and started storing stuff in there that he knew I wouldn't throw away. The tents, sleeping bags, folding chairs, etc. Then when it was getting really packed and I couldn't take using it as an office anymore, he started filling it with whatever. I can already hear the complaints when I go through the sleeping bags and throw away the ones that have a rip, or are just too stained. We have 10 sleeping bags. There are only 4 of us left here, with one most of the way out the door. We do not need 10 sleeping bags. So I plan to remind him that the deal was if it overflows his room its fair game, and I'll stay out of his room. If there is one thing he is the best about it is keeping his word. We also have an 8x10 shed outside that is overflowing to the point that it has become hard to cut grass. He now owns 4, yes I said 4, tree stands for hunting. He aquired 2 just last week as a trade for doing some electrical work for a friend. I've given him till the first hurricane to get them stored away somewhere. They are presently in the yard in front of the shed, can't fit them inside. I guess the weirdest thing I have managed to declutter was 3 dock lights he brought home from the chemical plant he works at. They replaced them with newer more efficient models, and DH just couldn't take the fact that they were going to throw them away. They sat in my shed for 7 years, until I tried to clean out the shed last year. I managed to give those away to a friend that lives on a river and has a small dock. You should have seen my husband pacing as they were loaded up to go, lol. Since I've decluttered most of the house, he spends more time outside of HIS room, which gives me the hope that eventually he will see the wisdom of "less is more". I'm keeping the office clean up a secret until I'm ready to do the minor remodeling to make it a closet, that way I won't have to tackle new junk. Yes, I can be a die-hard optimist at times, lol.

Cynthia - that sounds like me! When I met Marla at a Women's Expo in Tulsa a few years ago (I don't remember exactly, it was when Body Clutter went on Amazon) she said to me "be like the Nike commercial and 'Just Do It' " I still don't have that in practice! So for my challenge -I got rid of some trash this morning on my dining table. There are still some put away things that have relocated nearby LOL but an improvement at least. Guess today when I get home I need to get back into the office for at least 15 min. The nice thing is DHdid a bunch yesterday and cleared some stuff from the hallway-not out just put in a new home. It helps!

Well, let me tell you, I set a goal of decluttering 15 minutes a day, 5 days a week, 3 weeks ago, and have not reached it yet. I am determined to do it this week, because I am accountable to someone besides myself. But, it matters not, it will get done this week. I won't finish the task of remaking my office/storage/junk room into a walk-in closet in one week, but at least it will put me on the right path. My master bedroom is 10'x10', with no closets, so you see I have been wanting this since before that room became an office/storage/junk room, lol. If it wouldn't be for you guys, it would take me much longer to "commit" to what I want to do. I'm a terrible procrastinator.

that is great! Unfortunately, there are not places to go with our things to recycle in my country. They tried to start with bins for plastic bottles and for batteries but it only lasted a year even if people was using the service.

Ok, cynthia inspired me so I no longer have in my home:
21 magazines (went to somebody who is going to appreciate them)
10 diskettes
7 catalogs
1 jacket (there are people who go house to house asking for things to be given away. There's a woman that comes to my home regularly whom I give all our clothes)
3 large bags full of bags!!! There must be about 50 bags in there! The space they were taking up look so good now!

emoticon Thank you, Katty!

I've been trying to be Green since way before it was a fad. To me, it's a way of life. It frustrates my husband sometimes, but he accepts it and I try to tone it down a bit then.

I sent it a bunch of empty printer cartridges in March, and today I received a check for them! Yippee! Now I can say that I've been paid to recycle! emoticon

wow team! I'm impressed! Cynthia with that amazing load she took away! Jari with that green knowledge she does put to practice (I appreciate the fact that you are educating us in that respect. I am green too, but not nearly as much as you are! Chapeau!) And all the rest, because of your motivation with this challenge!

About tossing medicines: They should not be flushed down the toilet, as they get into the water system and can't really be cleaned as well as needed. Instead, put them with your hazardous wastes, or return them to the pharmacy if they will take them. My daughter had some medical powder that needed disposal, and I was told to mix it with kitty litter or coffee grounds, used, and then bag it securely and put it with the trash. As I don't drink coffee, I went to a local coffee house where they give away grounds for composting. They gave me some, and I followed directions, and have a empty space on my countertop!

Well done ladies, not sure about the kids - they do have a habit of boomeranging. Today I'm on my third shelf which is the meds shelf - what a mess. I have a feeling I'll be throwing a lot of bottles out just by looking at the Use by date.

Wow, Cynthia! emoticon That's great!

About all I've gotten rid of today is a basket of papers that I dropped off at a the accountant and will be getting back, so I don't think it counts. I did send off three children yesterday, and they won't be coming back today, so do they count? emoticon I see that I have to stop pampering myself and go do my Master Bedroom. Sigh. You ladies are too hard on me. emoticon

I got rid of an old box of easter egg dye, a stash of plastic grocery bags, saved for some long forgotten reason, several empty boxes from computer parts, saved because the warranty requires you to mail the part back in the box if you have problems, An old zip drive, 5 old mice, and an old keyboard. I stacked 2 old tv's, 1 vcr, 2 dvd players, and a monitor on top of my organ, to deliver all to my brother-in-law this weekend. He has a repair shop and can use parts from some of these. The organ he is repairing for me. All that in just 15 minutes, lol. Of course I was in the Office/storage/junk room. I can now see a 3x3 square foot of floor that I couldn't before.

I'll have to see what I can get rid of when I get home- not much here at work other than the usual bag of trash I empty from the break room every day.

In the process of doing the next pantry shelf, I've thrown out three year old canary seed, have put aside; balloons, canary perches and party hats to take around to my daughter who now has the canary and young children who love balloons which are not three years old. LOL

I gave away some rabbit meat, and some recipes I had printed, that are now in my cooking software, so they were no longer needed, but would have never been thrown away, lol. I hope that counts.

I gave away a cute dress that is too small for my daughter, emoticon and two trash cans emoticon and kind of one compost bin, already today. I gained one compost bin, though, so that cancels out the one I gave away, except if I hadn't given it away, I would have two of the same big compost bins!

Let's find ONE THING to GET RID of EACH DAY. If you find more than one item to give away or send to the trash, much better! But you can give yourself a golden star if you take one thing out of your home each day.

you may choose ONE ROOM to work in the whole week- the bedroom, the garage, the mudroom...

you may choose ONE PLACE to work in the whole week- say, your closet, or the pantry, your work area in your office, your saved files in your computer

you may choose to DO IT AT RANDOM- you're putting the clothes in place and see if there's something in your closet to get rid of; the next day you do some yard work and notice you have too many plants and decide to give some to a dear friend, or maybe you have too many pots; the third day you can't find a disc you were looking for and realise you have too many you have never used, so why keep them?.

The whole idea is to become aware of what is taking up too much space in our lives which could be used for things we love, or just to give us a little more walking space! LOL

Make room for the best to come to your life!
