Ok, new here but need to do something drastically with my 'spare' room. Not very spare any more, cos its filled with everything that doesn't belong anywhere else. Got my day planned out today - if I don't take my handmower to the grass/weeds the dogs and possibly the mower and I will get lost in it, so that's it for today. Lots of grass jungle to clear with only 'me' power, but great exercise anyway.

Tomorrow onwards, I am going to spend 30 minutes each day sorting the stuff out in there, getting rid of what isn't necessary, specially all the stuff I 'might need some day', and getting it to the point where I can leave the door open and not be ashamed of what's thrown in there cos I was too lazy to put it in its rightful place! This may take a while, folks...

Can't believe how many catalogs I've been saving that I got rid of last night. My recycle bin is going to be extra-heavy this week.

Still working in THE ROOM! Had sort of a break-through for me yesterday, because I have trouble getting rid of things. I had been saving lots of glossy ads from newspapers to make magazine bowls, which I have not done yet. I've cut a folded a few pieces, but the project is definitely not finished. Well, I recycled lots -- pounds and pounds!-- of the newspapers I had been saving. There will always be more when I get around to doing the project.

I'm heading in to start decluttering my arts & crafts room -- a total mess! Will take my cell phone in with me for protection in case I fall over something and can't get up!

Managed to declutter by helping a friend in need. Got rid of some linens, a bathroom set, old draperies, two chairs and a bathroom curtain. It feels good!

I still have two boxes in my kitchen that need to be taken out. I decluttered a lot through the summer but clutter seems to reproduce when left unattended!

I do lots of crafts and with all my moves, I have accumulated lots of contaniners with "stuff" inside. Lots of buttons and beads and sequins and misc. With this move, I have found lots of little containers of stuff. I imagine that they started out holding small parts for a project and then got other small pieces stuffed in with it. So for the last few days I have been emptying these "small parts" and putting them in their proper containers. I now have lots of empty containers. Also been going through papers and books and stuff. Working on my third bag of trash in three days.

Well, I would sorely miss my friends in FLYbabies, but I still would love to delete "later". Okay, office declutter list: (I'm so happy emoticon )

THROW/GIVE AWAY
another bag of paper trash
3 old army duffel bags
a box of junk toys (you know the mc donald's type stuff)
some unused clothing (with tags still on them)
cat toys (no more indoor cats)

PUT AWAY- will be culled later
office supplies
school supplies
clothing I kept (with tags still on them, lol)
tents
camping chairs
sleeping bags
stray papers to file
sewing machines, yes that plural
one small shelf toys for grandkids to use + 2 riding toys
extra monitors, computer, extra hard drives, etc.
Hung one shelf on wall and assembled one of 2 clothing organizers

Well, declutter attack on DH's collection of silicone caulking. (we were looking for a good tube, lol) Out went 27 tubes of hardened caulking. And of course he still bought 2 extra tubes "in case" we need them later. "later" needs to be deleted from the dictionary as it never comes......

Oh my, you sure did have a lot of emails! Woot for clearing out 'puter space.

Last night - Halloween I was able to declutter:
A Halloween Board book (from when son was little)
3 Matchbox cars (son's again)
A magnetic 'Dress the skeleton' set (when daughter was little)
A light up mummy head (from a few years ago. I put in new batteries)
4 squishy skeletons (we had just gotten in our 'Ghost' bag, but what was I to do with them?)
A McDonald's Transformer toy
3 unused body lotions (from a trial set from last xmas)
3 unsharpened pencils
2 bouncy balls (were son's)
A plastic Halloween tumbler (cup)
2 leftover unused glow-sticks
and 6 (!!) large bags of candy (lol we had about 80 kids show up)

I had a lot of fun finding and giving away goodies.
The girls that got the body lotion said ours "was the best house." The family that got the dress up skeleton and a matchbox car thought "they were so cool." The mom of the little girl who got the board book said, "What a neat idea." And the funniest was the 2 little boys (both about 3 years old) who got the other 2 matchbox cars - both wouldn't let the mom put them in their bags.

Well, yesterday I bought a new lotion for my face so I tossed one I loved so much I didn't use so it would last more! Guess what? It expired with half the content never touched!

Great job Cynthia! Although it was cluttered again since your first decluttering in July, it didn't take you long to fling stuff to add another foot to the open space!
Katty, you make me laugh out loud!~ Isn't it funny how we keep things that don't really make us happy? I think it is our thrify nature, as long as it works, why get rid of it. But, the pan wasn't about to give up ~ no matter how much you used it! Funny.

I have lots of homework to do this week, so I think decluttering will have to wait until the weekend ~ unless I can't sleep some night.

Okay, I'm back to decluttering the office/storage/junk room again. You would not believe it, but since July when I first started decluttering this room, my 3x3 space I had made was taken over by clutter again. So yesterday, my brother-in-law called and said he was in the neighborhood, and did I have anything else he needed to pick up while he was out here. LOL, if he only knew.......... Of course I said yes, and happily handed him 2 more vcr's, 3 dvd players, 3 small tv's, a wireless keyboard and mouse, and a wall clock most of which was in need of repair, or that he can use for parts. My new open space is now 3x4 feet, WooHoo! Now if I could just remember to send him that battery backup for the computer, I would have had another 2 square feet.

woohoo! Well done! I'm so proud of you! I agree it is liberating!

I gave away two pairs of shorts, 2 chipped plates and two pots. one of them was in excellent condition, but I had had it for almost 20 years and always hated it. I used it all the time so it would break, but it never did! Darned thing! So, I finally took the courage and made it go!

Over the weekend, I took 3 garbage bags of clothes to the goodwill, gave away 2 other garbage bags of clothes, and have a box and garbage bag in my van to give away at church tomorrow night. I am letting go of the clothes that I no longer love or no longer fit right. I kept putting them out of sight (basement or garage) and not dealing with them. It is so freeing!! I was able to give one bag to a woman who has very little, and another bag to my mother. The other bags were items that I saved last year for this year winter, and the kids outgrew them!!

I was lucky! When Halloween started her about 5 or 6 years ago, there were no costumes to be sold- and so bought! Now that we have them in the stores, my DD wouldn't seen dead in one! So, no money spent on costumes here!

Got rid of a few items from the Halloween Costume bag in the basement. I like to keep a variety though so the kids have options and I don't need to go buy anything every year. Have to go through the coats sometime this week. It is getting quite chilly in Wisconsin!

Tossed another bag of garbage from DS's room, collected a 2'x2'x2' box of hot wheels/micro machines for the boy(s) to go through and split up. Yes, even my 29yr old still has some of his favorite ones, lol. Have another box of toys to donate somewhere, lol. And one more 15 minute session and I'll be done decluttering. (That room) WooHoo!

I tossed or got ready to toss items I went through today.

I got some checks and other papers shreaded today. I got cabinet TV sits on in computer room cleaned. There was so much dust. I also removed a VHS player to move out. It may go in box to take to Washington house next summer.

I did get some things done in family room. I got DVD's and VHS tapes unboxed and out of floor and in place. There are more somewhere. I just haven't located them. The water extraction people moved them when getting the carpet and flooring up and drying out the room.

I did open two boxes in the living room today and got one completely emptied. I can't put everything back in place yet. I discovered some items in bubble wrap in both boxes. I only unwrapped 2 items in one so I could empty the box and put those in a temporary location on mantel until I get table back in place. I feel a little better about my breakables now.

I'm not sure what the wrapped items are in other box.

I worked some in computer room and sunroom before going to physical therapy.

My husband brought me a bouquet of carnations today. I had to find a vase and figure out where to put them so cat wouldn't get them so for now it was the mantel. Usually it is the dinning room table.

Emptied 4 dresser drawers, and 3 desk drawers, in son's room, of stuffed animals. Will be dropping them off at my sister's house for her to put out at her garage sale as freebies. Also threw out a garbage bag of old school papers, notebooks, binders that were mashed, and some old underwear, actually brand new underwear that he had stashed under the stuffed animals, and from their size I would say about 3 years ago.

I organized 3 dressers upstairs and ended up getting rid of a big bag of garbage and a bag for goodwill. It was quite eye opening to realize that the whole bag I threw out was papers I thought I wanted. emoticon

Hooray! I finished cleaning the freezer, most of the refrigerator, and the medicine cabinet. I still haven't gotten to the stack of papers on the counter though - I keep putting it off!

I can relate to the one shoe! You are so right, as soon as you get rid of the one, you will find the other one. I am always amazed at how many things I find behind the kids' beds. Not on the floor, but stuck behind the bed and the wall. I might just move all beds 4 inches away from the wall, that would prevent that, huh?? I have a huge problem with unmatched socks. Good job on your decluttering.

First day of a new (work)week. Today I decluttered DS's center desk drawer. Yuck! Threw away 3 boxes of markers, all missing the black, red, and orange... don't know where they are, but I'll probably find them later, lol. Collected TONS of broken crayons to reform in the crayon maker. Threw away about 14 inkpens that were either broken or empty, 8 pencils the size of my little fingernail, 4 pieces of candy that were melting and getting all over the place, several hand held games that he doesn't play anymore, one board game that's too young for him, and about 4 partial decks of cards. Probably from his house of cards days..... actually he tried to build the whole town. Tomorrow I get to hit the other drawers, lol.

Stefunie, how did you declutter 2.5 pairs of shoes? I found 8 shirts in my closet and hair curlers (I just got my hair cut short) that I am going to donate to the Salvation Army tomorrow. I should have taken them right out to the van this morning emoticon , but I am still making progress!!

I'm tackling a stack of papers on my kitchen counter today that need attention. This is definitely a hot spot. Mail gets stacked there, and any other papers left laying around. I'm also going to clear out the freezer, and throw away some old meat that has freezer burn. I'm not very good at rotating - I need to do better!

emoticon emoticon Stef, I knew you could do it. I called those rags paper towels in my mind for so long that I actually fussed at my (now)15yr old for bringing me a real paper towel when I asked for one. I had to laugh when he said "that's what you asked for".
And look at you go Katty...WooHoo! You're making me look bad. I've only tossed one thing this week, but I have to admit it was a hard one. Guess I'd better get my tush into gear next week. Sorry but this weekend is taken over by DS. Just got rid of the party-goers, now to retake my home.

I tossed two pairs of sunglasses- hard to do because they were expensive and they still looked good, but one was broken on the brim and the other had a screw that kept on falling.
Also let go of a purse and a tee. That was not so difficult- I have been learning, apparently!

Decluttering:
While starting my 1-load/day, a very holey rag was on its way into the washing machine (more of a raggy hole!) I kept thinking what Cynthia said and I stopped...oh no...what did stef do? I wiped down some cobwebs and the top of the machine then threw it out!

listen to Cynthia! She's so right! The only way to do it is just doing it!

The first times are the worst, but then you get so excited about the extra space, the clean looking areas, the load you feel was lifted from your back, that you even enjoy your decluttering times!

Believe me, I was a rugs fan- I had so many you wouldn't believe. And then one day I told myself I had to get rid of them because they "uglified" the spaces they were in- and they were everywhere!!!. so I just grabbed them all and tossed them!!!! Then I went and bought myself some nice looking microfiber ones and felt so good!

Use whatever approach but please start with your rags. From what you said, it's because of rags that you don't get rid of clothes. So, if you stay committed to only "buying" rags yoou won't have an excuse to keep the clothes. One thing leads to another.

Apart from the microfiber, I love using baby wipes. they clean so well! they are always ready, no washing needed, they leave the surfaces smelling good, and they keep rugs out of the way as you don't need them!

Stef, one more thing, the body clutter will only go away if you feel good about yourself, and you know yoou won't feel good unless you improve your house skills because you think you're not good enough because you can't keep hoouse well. how do I know? Because I have been there!!!!!!!

We can do all at the same time withoout being overwhelmed. Start eating some fresh fruit and veggies, drinking more water, doing more exercise( walking 2 blocks more than you do is doing more exercise!),and we'll be here to improve our home skills together!

Oh no you don't........ The only thing that can help you de-bunk that rationale is to do, not to think. So grab a rag, any rag, clean a spot on the floor, the window, the counter, anywhere..... just one small job, don't make it hard, just the first thing you see. Then throw that rag away, without even looking at it, pretend it's a paper towel. Would you bother to look at it after use? Just toss it. One less thing to wash, one less piece of clutter, one less dirty spot, all in one 3-5 minute session. WooHoo! You can do this. No thought, just automatic pilot. And don't think you're getting this advice from someone who doesn't understand, I have been there more days than I care to remember. As a matter of fact, I have a christening dress from my daughters christening that I just can't bear to part with, even though a mouse chewed holes in it. I just realized that she will never want to see much less use the dress in that shape. So I'm going now, to dig it out of the souvenir box and toss it. Thank you for reminding me of how to let go.
Cynthia

Okay, it's gone. I had to walk it all the way out to the outside garbage cans to ensure I wouldn't change my mind, but I felt a huge sigh of relief. That's one item that won't ever make me feel bad again.

Thanks Katty & Cynthia
My plan to declutter yesterday got foiled when DH needed me to do other things- errands. OK so theres today to try again.

The funniest thing about what I flung yesterday was that the baby who use to wear that rag is now 21 y/o!
I didn't have the guts to admit it yesterday!
Better late than never.

It is so hard for me to toss anything! Its some kind of depression era mentality or something. I think I need to really study why I keep things. Maybe I can write about it here see if I can part with one thing at a time and if not why? Maybe you can help me de-bunk the "rationale" behind it...

OK- what is something I might get rid of? Three big categories for me are: clothes, books, old papers. I'll start with clothes because thats the bigger and more important one.

Why dont I toss the stained old clothes (or at least some of)?- because they make good rags which can then be tossed after they've been used to death.

That would make sense if i actually used them. I'm not organized enough to have them handy when I need one. So why not organize it? Because theres so much to organize I get overwhelmed at quit.

How to not get overwhelmed? "15 min", right?

See how I just turned throwing out 1 thing into a need for a massive overhaul?!! Well im officially turned-off of any housework now!! I do have some body clutter to work on So I'll do that first and then maybe I'll b e in better spirits for housework!

Thanks again for there and listening

That line is a keeper Cynthia!: "Just join the fun, we're not keeping score"

Stef, if you read my posts, you'll see that I tend to post things like "I tossed two markers", "I tossed one toothbrush", "I gave away one old towel". It doesn't seem much, but it is if you picture all that together!

We are no experts, some of us have just been longer on Flylady. Stay with us, we all learn together, and as Cynthis said:

No need to feel silly, last year if I would have been posting on this thread, the only thing I'd have had to list was an old bobcat skin that DH had in my freezer for 6 years. I called a taxidermist to see if it was still good. When he said no, I chunked it. There are lots of times when we only throw out one or two things. Each and every one of them is a milestone for most of us, and is something to brag about, believe me. One day I'll post a before and after pic of my clutter, but at the moment I have no camera. No place to put one if I had it, lol. Just join the fun, we're not keeping score.

Morning all,
It is a beautiful one here today and I hope to do well today with some of my clutter. I can report a couple of things recently. It may not seem like much compared to others but for me its better than nothing and I'm sure that you will understand. For example I finally put in a garbage bag a holey rag of an old baby outfit of my sons that I dont know why I still had - can't even tell if it was a onesie or a shirt?!!! Ok the bag isn't in the can yet but it definitely is at the door with other garbage to go out.

There's just something in the air today that says i want to be clearer in every way.

Is there a thread especially for beginners like me? or a community site? I do feel a little silly amoung such great flingers!

Thanks for listening

Glad to see some order coming back into your life Mary Ann. I've finally gotten those books I decluttered out of my trunk and into the library, lol. The woman there was so excited, as I had included the last 3 years of DS's summer reading requirements in the boxes. We had to buy them as the library only had 1 copy and it seemed to be checked out every time we went. I will make it a point to donate these every year, as soon as he is finished with them, from now on. Then maybe a few others will get use from them that same year.

Katty thanks. Right now with mostly just furniture in the computer room. I can see great potential. It will be Wednesday before I can get back in there to do much. I do have my husband's computer hooked back up but I have a speaker wire that I don't know where it hooks into computer. I have sound.

We do have to have a friend coming in to get the computer hooked back into a wireless Internet connection to the DSL line and he can probably figure out where the wire goes.

I had both computers hooked up to it and one day several months ago something went wrong and I could have one or the other hooked into modem and access the Internet. The computer room was such a mess that I was putting off getting it fixed until I could get the room less cluttered.

So Psalm3rd I can relate. I had gotten some areas of the house a little less cluttered before our long trip and then with our flood the whole house except maybe my craft room behind the garage got exposed to so many people.

Mary Ann, I hope things are going better for you.

We took a short trip out of town this weekend and I am still a little worn away. A friend watched our dog while we were gone and I was a little embarrassed she had to come into the junky computer room to give him his water. It made me dive in when I got back and I can actually see a visible difference.

Godinmyheart thank for the encouragement.

By light of day I looked too closely at the rooms that look awful and got discouraged. Well a couple of areas just need an hour or two.

I'm concentrating on computer room today. Because that way I can get things back in here without falling over the furniture that has to be put back in the largest room in the house (12 x 30).

This is one of the rooms behind the long family room. It is 12 1/2 x 12 1/2 plus closet.

Now I am leaving for a while to go to CMA (Christian Motorcyclist Association) headquarter to stuff Run for the Son packets. Our worldwide mission is to reach one heart at a time.

Your plan to finish with a room before going into the next one seems so sensible! That way you'll have that one room that is normal and will see the progress!

And you accomplished so much in just one day! Well done!!!!!!

1-As of today carpeting is now down in the computer room.

Daybed is back in room (still have to get trundle bed and mattress from garage),

TV is hooked back up to Dish. TV back in corner on stand. (finish underneath tomorrow).

3 file cabinets back in computer room (have to work on file tracks on one of them)

My desk partially cleaned but redid something. Computer hooked back up and online. Printer not quite in place.

One bookcase (still empty) from hallway changed to computer room.

Other computer desk in room but will set up computer tomorrow (my husband mostly uses that one. Got him a new flat screen monitor like mine.

Sewing desk back in room (empty). One embroidery machine sitting on floor.

2 desk chairs in room. 3 boxes to unpack others still in another room. One bookcase is still in master bedroom. Another large desk chair in closet in master bedroom.

Everything in here will be clean and in order before I bring more in.

2- hall carpeting put in. Had to unload 3 bookcases in there this morning when carpet guys got here so they could get rest of padding and carpet up.

Have got one bookcase reloaded with all my cooking and recipe magazines the I have sorted on file shelves set into bookcase. There is an old set of encyclopedias (from the 50's) of my husbands that just fit split on the ends of 5 shelves and on top.

There is another tall bookcase not back in place. That one I holds most of my cookbook collection. I want to get my cookbooks resorted and some I will get rid of. I'm going to put a smaller bookcase on the wall where I moved the one to the computer room.

3-Carpeting in the dining-family-den room. We got my husbands recliner, his table, TV hooked back up. (in other words his little nook) fixed. There is a lamp somewhere. The one he located to use blew a bulb. My husband did the TV hook-ups and I do the computer hook-up.

There is one window table and my china cabinet put back in there. My china cabinet was blocking me from getting anything from living room.

I do know where dinning table is but I still can't get to it, a piano is in the way. I have 2 dinning room chair in the room, another is in the sunroom and I haven't a clue yet of where the fourth is.

I was able to get telephone table back into family room. That has a drawer with tools in it that I keep in house. I have the table to go in front of loveseat but that is in garage along with other furniture to be brought back in.

There is lots of stuff cramed in the kitchen floor but I did get the books and things and bookcases out of my husbands bathroom.

I am totally exhausted. Tomorrow will start the gradually going through boxes and more cleaning.

We have some friends going to help bring in the loveseat, my husbands china and curio cabinet. I am going to leave all the boxes of the things that go back in those packed for a while.

We will still have to move more furniture when the carpeting gets put in the master bedroom and living room. But we will be the one moving things around in those rooms except heavy furniture.

The rest will have to be babysteps but quick ones.

I really think I will be able to accomplish what I want to and prove to my family the impossible can happen, with the help of all my sisters out there.

It was about to get depressing big time.

Mary Ann, I am so sorry to hear about the flood. I just can't imagine goming home to something like that. I am praying for you.

However, I would love to have your 12 bookshelf. I love books and have had to get rid of too many because of my many moves.

My last yardsale did not go do well. I think I have gotten rid of the good stuff and only have junk left. It is time to donate! We were only having the yardsales before trying to make some money for dd to participate in the choir. It has helped a little, but now time to quit.

I started decluttering my desk so it can be moved Friday when the carpet is put in and I found 3 cheks to cash or deposit. I only knew 2 were there.

I also found a couple of magazines I was looking for. I'm not through yet.

This is one room I want to have completely usable when I locate the furniture and supplies that goes in that room. I have a few rearranging ideas.

Today, as I cleaned out a dresser for my son to use, I threw away an old sample pack of "something I couldn't read anymore", 2 empty glass coke bottles with the LSU Tigers emblem on them, 7 clothes pins that were broken, a handful of wire nuts, 2 bolts for who knows what, an empty roll of electrical tape, and 1 old sock with a hole in it. What won't my DH keep?

Oops, I have to take credit for the clothes pins.

Ithink maybe I'm where I ought to be. This is a bit long but may in the future I can post some of my decluttering and feel good about it.

After Friday I will gradually get back to decluttering. Right now I can hardly get in some rooms.

While on a month long vacation (we did have a house and cat sitter or it would have been worse) our house flooded inside and things were put into many places. Furniture blocking entry into some rooms and part moved to garage.

New carpet and padding will be put down Friday in 3 rooms and then carpet in two other rooms put back down after replacing padding. One of those may have to have new carpeting and if so the other will have to be changed also. I think the tile in 3 other rooms are going to make it with just some cleaning after every thing is moved.

I have many, many books. Some got destroyed in the flood. I had them out cleaning the cases and left on the floor to dry to completely dry while I was gone. Actually these were National Geographic's back to 1979 that fit into two what looked books (sort of leather or vinyl cover for each year. The had filled one bookcase. Part of them were in the kitchen floor (the flooding started from a busted water filter under the sink)

I don't recommend having a flood as a way of getting rid of books. I had the other half of the books in another room where the carpet was removed. When I locate those if the aren't so bad I will donate to the library. It just won't be a complete set. I have sentimental ties to this because they lead to my son becoming a Archaeologist (he even but that in his Master's Thesis credits)

I have a 12' wall of books, 3 bookcases in the hall, and bookcases in 4 other rooms. I guess you can say I have collected a lot of books. I have given away quite a few in the last year. I do have bookcases for different types of subject matter.

My children think I am a lost cause as far as clutter, my books and all my craft supplies. I had finally gotten some rooms almost free of craft supplies before we left in July. Now it feels like we are camping out in our house with less available than if we were really camping.

Take heart, I am seriously over run with books, back from when the oldest boy was a baby (he's 29 now). I've kept 4 bookshelves full, that I'll have to pare down eventually. The rest literally were outdated for this household.

You two are seriously making me think I should give away some books too. But, books are what I treasure. So, will have to be emotionally and mentally stronger to tackle that one.

Meanwhile, I tossed another 2 markers today.

I love yard sales but never get around to having one. I have good intentions I save things hence some of the clutter I have. I end up donating to charity so to get of things.

we need yard sales in Uruguay! We've adopted so many of your customs that that is possibly going to happen sometime into the future. the younger generations are more used to discarding things- mostly electronics- to upgrade. So they are more likely to buy into the yardsale idea than previoous generations.

I need to declutter my pantry really bad. Today I sent 7 cans of Pork and Beans down the road to a neighbor (I kept 6), and that is just the beginning. I don't even know where some of this stuff comes from, lol. So I decided to make it a daily chore to remove at least 1 unwanted item from my pantry till its all done. I have a box set up to put it in, and I thought I could grab something each time I'm in there looking for something else, and I'll be done by the end of next week.

Just thought I'd let you know, I tossed some more beans today, lol. My Wookie took half the pot to campus with him. Also tossed lots of old newspapers and magazines that were hiding. And DH actually threw away those shorts I had tried to toss. I had to buy him 3 new pairs to get it done though. emoticon emoticon

the great thing about this thread is you don't have to go into a big decluttering project ot be able to post. And if you know that by tossing 2 markers, which is what I last tossed, you can post it, it encourages to toss them! Funny, but it works for me!
