PART 5
EARLY WARNING SIGNS

Early warning signs are internal and may be unrelated to reactions to stressful situations. They are suble signs of change that indicate you may need to take some further action.

The next part of the WRAP program is called EARLY WARNING SIGNS.
Insert these three worksheets into the thrid tabbed section of your WRAP notebook, followed by several extra sheets of filler paper (lined). Early warning signs may come in response to triggers, or they may come out of the blue. They might include:

anxiety or nervousness
forgetfulness
lack of motivation
feeling slowed down or sped up
avoiding doing things on your Daily Maintenance List
avoiding others or isolating
beginning irrational though patterns
increased irritability or negativity
increase in smoking
not keeping appointments
spending money impulsively
feelings of discouragement or hopelsesness
substance abuse
failing to bluckle your seat belt
not answering the phone
overeating or under-eating
weepiness
inability to experience pleasure
being uncaring apathetic
being obsessed with things
feeling unconnected to my body
aches and pains
beginning of irrational thought patterns

Circle any of the symptoms on the previous list that are early warning signs for you and write others you have noticed.

Some of my personal warning signs (Sheri's) include:
unusual tiredness
physical pain
zoning out
increased anger for no reason
extreme nervousness in stores
feelilng weepy
shutting down...closing into myself by turning off phones, not going on the computer etc.
staying in bed all day

EARLY WARNING SIGNS ACTION PLAN
On this (the next) page, develop a plan that you feel will keep your symptoms from worsening if you experience early warning signs.

Ideas of things you can do in response to early warning signs as a SAMPLE PLAN:

do the things on your Daily Maintenance Plan whether you feel like it or not
tell a supporter or counselor how you are feeling and ask for their advice
peer counsel at least once a day until early warning signs diminish...that is to get peer support, not give it
do at least one focusing exercise a day
do at least three 10-minute relaxation exercises each day
write in your journal for at least 15 minutes each day
spend at least 1 hour involved in an activity you enjoy - hobbies, sports etc.
ask others to take over your household responsibilities for A DAY
go to twelve step meetings
take a mental health day
arrange to leave work early
get plenty of rest

Circle any of the things on this list that would be good for you to do. Write down any other responses to early warning signs.
My personal (Sheri's) ideas include:

taking a nap
have a home-spa day
read my devotions in my Bible
look through a happy or blessings journal to remind me of the good things
look at my achievement certificates and diplomas
scrapbook

Other things you MIGHT choose to do if they feel right to you:

check in with your physician or other health care professional
surround yourself with loving, affirming people
spend some time with y our pet
read a good book - if you can focus
dance, sing, listen to good music, play a musical instrument
exercise - choose your favourite and enjoy it

Circle any of these things that you might want to consider doing. Write down any other "'maybe" responses to early warning signs.

For me, (Sheri) I included:

calling a distress phone line
write my feelings out in poetry
call a Case worker if it is urgent
go to the ER if it is overwhelming

Sheri :)
