Is anybody else going to try this out? I'd like to see everybody try adn write a letter of support for yourself. Write the letter out as if you are writing to ANOTHER person and then go back to the beginning and put DEAR (YOUR NAME). Then post it here as an affirmation to yourself and also an encouragement to/for others. :) C'mon folks, you can do it!!!!! I believe in you!!!!! emoticon

Thank you Victoria. I've been in counseling or some sort of therapy for 16 years now, so I'm getting used to really looking inside and being truthful, however difficult that may be. But the more honest you are with yourself, the happier you will be with yourself. :)

My letter of support to myself:

Dear Sheri,

You are doing very well at your new lifestyle. You have your nutrition down pat and don't even have to think about what aisles to go down and which ones to pass. Sure, it was hard at first to pass the cookie, ice cream and chips aisles, but your constant affirmation of "Yes, I'd like it but no, I don't need it," worked for you.

While you are not losing weight, you know the many reasons behind that. With 35 medical conditions and the number and amount of medications taken for them, you have a limit as to what you can do. You get out every day, if only for a 15 minute walk, and if the weather is not good enough to get out, your housework compensates.

I know you'd like to lose the weight, but you and your doctor have discussed the difficulties due to the medication and medical limitations.

You know the path, you have the skills and you will eventually be thinner...perhaps not skinny, but thinner and most of all, healthier. Skinny is not your goal...healthy is. You can do it, you know you can. By the grace of God, all things are possible because HE walks with you every step of every second of each day, one step ahead of you.

Try not to get frustrated when the scale doesn't go down and remember it is the effort that counts, not the total pounds lost. Health comes a long way before skinny.

Love,
yourself

Thank you Sheri! :) I have to say writing it really was cathartic and transformational; it is a completely new way of thinking for me. I am sure I will be returning to it many, many times in the future.

I have to admit, I need to work on mine. Being sick, I forgot about this one. WELL DONE!!!!!

How'd it make you feel to first of all write it and then go back and read it over again?

I wrote one yesterday and put it in a letter and taped it in my journal. It made me feel better about myself. I feel kind of embarrassed to post it here, but what the heck. Here is part of it:

Hey You,

I'm looking at your photograph. You ought to do something about your hair, and I don't mean this in a bad way. You need to take care of yourself, and doing you hair each day is important. But enough about hair.

It seems you are going through a bad time, and it seems like ages. But in fact you are making progress; you learned how to cook, you journal, volunteer and do all sorts of other things like educate yourself on healthy living. You quite smoking, lost some weight, worked, and traveled. And then there is therapy...even though your doctor is getting paid to make you feel better, it is not just all about the fact that he is. He's a good doctor and helps you with your depression, which is getting to you so, you need to manage it. Your mother may be blunt but she is there for you. And your girlfriends, even though sometimes you feel are not quite sincere are, and have been around. Remember that. Look at the positive side of things, don't bring yourself down. It's not to late to enjoy life; accept your place in life so you can stop wasting time and move on. There is a lot of work to do.

...

I am also going to have to think about this. I'll post it later

It's insane to repeat the same behavior while expecting a different outcome.

FITITGIRL, you did a great job.
The rest, yes it is hard to be nice to ourselves. Just think of how long we have been hard on us. Write the letter of support to YOU as though you were writing it to somebody in your shoes. Just goes to show how hard it is to affirm our own selves that it is okay to make mistakes; it's okay to have a little pride; it's okay to be happy even if someone else we love or like is not...etc. I hope to see letters by Friday.

I have this as a blog post in my Spark page also: Posting it again here since I found it little relevant:

My pep talk and support to myself..

Hey,

What do you do when a stranger happens to come in your way in a super market? You say 'I am sorry or Excuse Me' with so much courteousness. But what do you do when your dh or kid is on your way? You scream at them to get out of the way... How strange? You seem to be so understanding and polite to the total stranger but what about the loved ones in your life? Don't they deserve more than a scream?

Ok, here my point is: I am that person that screams at my dh the hard way to get things done especially when I am exhausted.. I don't know why everything seems to be against him during that time and all I get to recollect is the worst moments.. I even challenge to take revenge.. Then when I am slightly normal, I began to feel guilty and my stress level goes up and it doesn't seem to help me anyways.. A total surrender to him with a long sorry might help but here comes my 'Ego' which doesn't always help me take that path.. Wouldn't it be so nice if I have little more patience and understanding?

Am going to try to be polite and control my anger for the rest of the day today.. I need to be able to mind my words.. No harsh, rude words and filthy language.. I need to be able to tame myself slowly..

Ok, and am planning to handle one day at a time now...

Sounds a little narcistic but what the heck. We are our own worst enemies at times putting ourselves down, and kicking ourselves when we do something bad, or eat a bad food. The challenge for this week is for you to write yourself a letter of support. Pretend that you are your best friend that's going through a rough time, and write whatever you would write for her/him. Pretty much write yourself a love letter either in your blog, or paper journal if you have one, or just on a piece of paper, and tuck it away for when you really need it. This is the place to come back and talk about it.

I can hardly wait to see some of the responses to this. I have to sit down and work on mine and if I forget to post it, somebody please gently remind me :)
