I don't usually change midrace much either. Like with 30/30 just sometimes I decide to do run for two 30 seconds then walk for 1 30 sec if its a downhill, etc.

FBI is my team for the BLC challenge on Sparkpeople- It stands for Fuchsia Beauties Incorporated. There's about 15 or 20 teams total for the biggest loser challenge on here.

Yeah, I don't change my Gym Boss mid-race to adjust intervals, but I should. Once I start making it up I have trouble getting back on track. And OK ... I have to ask ... What is FBI?

I also alter it to walk through water stops, run the downhills, and do straight intervals or walk more on the uphills.

Thanks, that is helpful. I don't worry so much about the beeping, because even at loud I think its hard to hear with others talking, traffic, etc. I rely on the vibration more than the sound in a race. But I don't like starting and stopping frequently in a group. I never really feel at ease during a race until everyone spreads out--I guess I worry about tripping and can never quite find my own pace until I have my own space. But I bet the shorter ratio would make for a more steady pace. When I do longer, I pass people on the run, who then pass me on the walk, back and forth., until we spread out later in the race.

I think I will work with the shorter ratios a bit. Thanks for the input!

I like the shorter intervals also. My most common is 30/30, 45/30, or 1/30. I have done whole marathons with 30/30 and did better than when I try to lengthen the run. I do sometimes worry it probably annoys people around me to hear my constant beeping though.

I change my ratio all the time, depending on the type of run, the weather, the terrain, how I'm feeling, etcetera.

I prefer the shorter ratios, e.g. 40/20 (2/1), 30/30 (1/1), 45/15 (3/1).

Wondering from other Galloway runners: When and how do you alter your run/walk ratios? Do you adjust your pace or your ratio for heat, distance, hills, etc?

I know the Galloway books recommend changing your pace for heat, but I find it really hard to do that. I always seem to fall back into my usual rhythm and pace. This happens whether I am trying to speed up or slow down. So it seems that changing run/walk ratios might be the better way to adjust, for me. I have been doing a 2 min jog/ 30 sec walk for a while, but recently tried a 1 min:15 sec ratio. This is the actual recommendation for me bsed on my Magic Mile.

I switched mid-run because it was hot and humid, but turned out my pace was faster and the run felt easier with the shorter ratio. So I tried it this weekend on a long run (12 miles) and it felt good. On an easier run, or in a race (which I only do occasionally), I think stopping/starting so frequesntly would be annoying.

So ... shoudl I pick a a ratio and stick with it? Or do some of you change your ratio depending on what kind of run you are doing?
