The performance went really well! I didn't land the veil on my head until afterward, when I was trying to get an action photo with it.

Well, I have now completed my first choreography and presented it to my teacher for feedback... I'll be performing it in a show in a few weeks, which is both nerve-wracking and exciting. I'm totally in love with my music and my costume choice, and I got some much-needed feedback and reassurance from my teacher, so I'm hoping confidence in my abilities as a choreographer will follow.

Of course, my veil did still catch on my head... but much better in a practice demo than on stage!

Learning a tango fusion number and a tribal glam for the fair and Hippie Fest. After so much stress, it is great to dance again!

Still working on wrangling the 4-yard veil... I've been invited to perform as a soloist in September, and I need it to be perfected for my choreography!

Also working on group choreography for a show later this month, and some ideas for another one next March.

I've also been spending 5-10 minutes a day working on building toward a belly shimmy/flutter. On a good day I'm up to 8-16 counts at a time! On most days it's still less than that, though, but I'm making progress!

My choreography is officially ready for polishing! The goal now is to present it at a performance opportunity early this fall, which should give me plenty of time to smooth out the rough patches. (Mostly this means veil technique...)

I'm also working on polishing a different choreography for a group performance at a hafla this Saturday.

Seeing as it's the last day of 2018, here's what I've been working on:
Backward bending
Belly rolls/undulations
3/4 shimmies
Playing finger cymbals

I'm planning to continue working on all of these in 2019, and am hoping to work on better figure 8s (hips and chest), too!

One good thing about choreographing the cymbals/dance yourself - it will feel natural to you. Sometimes choreo by others does not feel quite right when trying to learn.

I agree! The first time my first teacher told us to put on finger cymbals was FOR a performance. What? I just kept them on my hands and danced the dance, because there's no faking that skill.

The only thing for it is to start getting more and more familiar with moving while you play. There just aren't any shortcuts.

You can do this!

Thank you so much for that playlist! I don't have time to go through it this morning, but I can see just from the video titles that it will be very helpful!

I agree with my teacher that it's time (I will be adding them to a choreography I know well, we were invited to perform at an event where finger cymbals will be taught, etc.)... but this is the first time I'm having/getting to add finger cymbals without having someone else tell me when and what to play and that is mildly terrifying.

Yes, it is a lot of pressure. But, how exciting!

Here is one of my favorite finger cymbal practice playlists.

Even if you march in place while you run through it each day, you will start to pick up the skill of moving while playing an instrument.

Show is done! The audience seemed to enjoy it, which was great.

We had awful dressing room issues. The dressing room was a curtained off area by the stage. The size was significantly smaller than last year - our suitcases could barely fit along the curtain, and the only wall space space open was the stage entrance. We had to pin the curtains together to keep them from flopping open while we were changing. And, there were NO lights. The organizers only had lights on the stage. Full costume changes were extremely difficult in the dark and made our show run long.

Now - on to next year. I am thinking "Magic Carpet Ride". Anyone seen/heard a Middle Eastern instrumental version?

Show is May 5. Today is a run through and next week is dress rehearsal. Two rehearsals (short run throughs) after that and we are go!

Thanks, Bonniemargay. That's a good drill.

Thanks, Denia . . . I'll try it.

Practice looking at your shadow instead of a mirror. You might be surprised!

I'm not sure who has the best video on arm undulations, but here is my favorite drill for it:

Shrug your shoulders up and down, focus on the down.

Get your shoulder blades all the way down and keep them there "in your back pockets".

With your arms out and your shoulders down, rotate your elbows so they point at the wall behind you.

Relax them so they point at the floor again.

Check your shoulders, rotate your elbows, relax them. Repeat a zillion times.

This articulation can be intense, but is such an important part of gorgeous arms!

The fundamentals are so important! And it can be really hard to make progress in foundation movements instead of just repeating what you already do. This is a HUGE deal!
