The basic concept of the zone is to balance your food so that your body has the necessary energy to run, but does not overproduce chemicals that could cause trouble (such as insulin and anti-inflammatories). There are 5 basic elements to the entire zone, they call it a wellness pyramid. I will describe them all here briefly, however, we will likely focus on food from this point on:

1. Healthy diet, maintaining balance. I will delve into this in the next post

2. Omega-3 fatty acids, especially EPA/DHA (in fish oil). Dr. Sears says that these help with silent inflammation. However, we all should be taking an Omega-3 supplement, it is good for losing body fat, it helps lower triglycerides, and has numerous other benefits.

3. Polyphenols, another chemical that is meant to be helpful in relieving inflammation. Fortunately, these are the colorful chemicals found in fruits and vegetables. Dr. Sears suggests taking a supplement as well, but in our case the importance of fruits and vegetables is most of what we'll likely emphasize

4. Fitness: it's important to do. Enough said.

5. Supplements, The Zone Promotes condition specific supplements. Again, this is not something we're likely to get in on here, but feel free to check up on your own.
