My local Weight Watcher class is about to begin just such a challenge. For every pound we lose, the local class donates a food item (ie a lb worth +/-) to the local food shelf. For ease in transport, some of us will put a monetary amount on our goal and donate according to our ability. Participation is optional. The International headquarters will be donating a dollar for every pound lost (up to one million dollars) over the same time frame. I'll use meeting my fitness or weight goals to monitor my own progress and contribution to the local food shelf.

This recession has hit home hard for some folks. Anything we can spare is appreciated. I can recal one pastor shedding tears at their near empty food panty, when suddently a neighboring church came in with about 30 sacks of groceries (as well as money). Tough times call for even more compassion from those are so wonderfully blessed.

This looks like an old thread, but it seems to be a great idea! I am going to start setting aside a non perishable food item for every workout I get, too.... unless the challenge resumes and there are different rules... fill me in, please!

I collect a can after deliberate exercise at least 5 times a week...for some walking a mile 5X works best...for me it's at least 30 minutes of cardio a day...I collect for the Food Bank anyway...this is just a way of incorporating my health as an added motivator.. thanks for checking out the threads and welcome to the team!...Peace&Hugs, Beany

Good Morning Guys!!!

Ok. So I'm gonna start the challenge tomorrow. As of right now, I haven't heard anything about being able to have a team tracker for cans. If I did our own tracker and put a link to it, would you all remember to tell me when you always reach 5 miles so I can add those cans? Or I could just make an excel sheet. I can open a new thread and you guys could just tell me there when you've reached each 5 miles and I could adjust the numbers as needed. Would that work? I'm sure I can find an online team tracker thing.

How about moving...focused moving...5 times a week?...it can be dancing, biking, walking, running, swimming, taking the stairs...but moving with a purpose...let's not limit ourselves or box ourselves in...the whole point is to encourage more exercise and helping others at the same time...the original 'mile idea' was just a spark...who says we can't tweak, lol...I don't want anyone to feel discouraged or feel they 'can't' join in this challenge...my thought is just to look for more ways to incorporate a little extra ummmpphh into our weekly routines...what say you ladies???...Peace&Hugs, Beany

emoticon I'm in. I need to start walking more anyway. And I totally understand about needing help sometimes. I was a single parent for most of my children's lives. I was making minimum wage and supporting 2 kids, a very tough thing to do without help.

I'm in...is something I've been doing anyway, lol...so I feel people can make it what they want...when I see things on sale I will put an extra in my cart and then I keep the extras in a separate cupboard so when I've accumulated a bagful, I take it in...hugs, Beany

I am one of those who r fretting right now where I may lay my head next or a nice meal. Im not trying to be a pity party or anything. I am just letting you all know I can relate and have been able to for some time now. This is exactly something I need to do! I already feel so inspired. I know from the past how good I feel inside when I help someone. SO PLEASE COUNT ME IN AND GIVE ME THE DETAILS ASAP!
Ive been on this and other spark teams for a while now and left it b/c of ... whatever. I plan to be more active and get to the person I am to be inside and out!

Sorry! lol.. I'm trying to do a bunch of things at one time. I was just thinking one canned good after your 5 miles. If you do more, you can donate more but I'm not gonna stress that. Wanna make it as easy as I can for people. More would be great! So like, 1 can at the end of ea week? Or more? If I gave one can with each mile, we'd have no food ourselves in my house lol. Does that make sense?

I'm a little confused too. It sounds like 5 miles a week but only one canned good at the end of the month?

Should it be 5 miles a week and 1 canned good per mile donated to a food bank? If so, and you completed the challenge you would have 20 miles and 20 canned goods to be donated. Is this correct? If we do more miles do we keep collecting can goods or do we limit it.

One mile everyday or adding up to 5 miles a week. Ok. I'm gonna start the list of people who wanna do it. I'll let signups go for about a week? That gives everyone the chance to get in. Totally cool. Thanks guys!

Guess I'm confused...one mile a month or one mile 5 times a week?

I was given this idea by RAINPUDDLE and Beaniegirl. I think we should start a challenge where we walk 5 miles a week. That's 1 mile 5 times a week or broken up into whatever days. At the end of our miles, everyone collects one canned good and puts it in a bag and at the end of the challenge, or whenever, take the bag of cans to a food bank to help others for the holidays. That's so awesome! Me and many other have been single parents at times and not had anything at Thanksgiving and know the importance of donations and helping. Plus, to me personally, I feel that the holidays are about helping others. There's so many people out there who have nothing and in my opinion, as the wife of a Marine who fights for this country, thinks it's sad that ANYONE goes hungry in the United States no matter what their circumstance is. For those of you who can't do the mile, let me know and together, we'll come up with something easier for you to do but you'll still be able to have a goal to reach and can help. Sound good? I'll be sending out an email to the team tonight or tomorrow. Hope everyone joins. Perfect chance to get the team going in another direction and to a really good place!

Em
