I ate a FiberOne bar on the way to the nutritionist in Chapel Hill. She told me that I am not eating enough, especially at breakfast. When I have oatmeal and fruit and milk, she thinks I should add an egg and half a wholegrain english muffin! emoticon

Heather, I like breakfast ruts--that's how Quaker Oats stays in business! Although I have cut my portion to 1/3 cup instead of 1/2.

When I was little I hated oatmeal, wouldn't touch it with a 10 foot pole! But now I love it! I usually keep of box of instant at work too.

Good for you, Heather--you took an excuse to fail and turned it into a positive plan to be healthy! Way to go!

I am back on my oatmeal rut again, BUT-I found a couple pkg of fresh peaches I had frozen last summer--hanging out in the very back of the freezer. Aaahhhhh! My mostest favoritest breakfast--oatmeal with fresh peaches! Yummy!

Blessings,
Pat

Even though it was a challenge I did good with breakfast this week. I was at my boyfriends most of the week, and you know guys, they never have healthy food. I kept a box of the Kashi bars at work, and bought a carton of milk every morning from the cafe at work, and took a piece of fruit with me to work.

I did pretty good on this the past month. Ideally I'd like to eat breakfast before I leave the house, but I'm usually in a time crunch, normally I get everything in within an hour of each other.
The orange juice actually came from I think week 2 of stage 2 about staying hydrated. They suggested drinking a glass of water or OJ upon waking just to rehydrate. As much as I love water I just have no desire for it first thing in the morning, so I chose OJ, I usually have a cup of coffee as well.

Heather, try to get a little protein or some fiber into breakfast if all you are having is juice--that will just spike your blood sugar, release a rush of insulin, and leave you with a low blood sugar and nothing for energy. The protein and fiber will slow the process down.

Today I had a Nature Valley oatmeal bar and a glass of milk.

Blessings,
Pat

Oatmeal and cereal have become my best friends lately. I can eat them at work pretty easily. I try and drink some OJ first thing in the morning to get in a fruit, then yogurt for a snack before lunch, so I spread my breakfast out into 3 meals

I am back on my oatmeal with dried apricots, but I got milk today, so tomorrow it may be instant breakfast again!

I did pretty good with breakfast while I was away. I had a cup of yogurt everyday, and usually some fruit with it, I did splurge a little when we went out for breakfast.

Pat, don't stress about the sausage. I buy them when they are on sale and then toss the extra in the freezer then pull out and thaw just what I want to eat that day. Plus it'll give you some variety.

Today I got off to a rather late start so I had BRUNCH! I made my oatmeal just the way I like it with dried cherries and apricots, had a cup of coffee, a poached egg and link sausages. I'm planning to have a snack later instead of lunch and a light-medium dinner, pretty early. Eager to step on the scales tomorrow and see the results of my "fishy" week.

Blessings,
Pat

Thursday I splurged and had sausage links with my oatmeal and dried fruit. I bought them in a moment of weakness and now I have to eat them--can't afford to waste, but I was careful with my sodium today.

Pat, I think that is a good thing, I'm pretty sure you said you have the sugar free version, and it's got a lot of protein and with the milk it adds calcuium!

I had left over pancakes topped with strawberries today, and i managed to still get to work early!

Today was a yummy breakfast, but took up almost my whole days allotment of everything. Egg and steak omelet with grits and a small glass of OJ

I remembered breakfast this morning! Had a small glass of OJ then enjoyed my muffin at work.

I found a pumpkin granola at Whole Foods in the bulk bin, yum! I love everything pumpkin, which reminds me, Joan the Kashi pumpkin granola bars are on sale at target for $2.66! I grabbed a box so they'll come in handy next week when I'm on the road.

My new favorite breakfast (or lunch) thanks to a link in the recent breakfast idea email from spark people is: peanut butter, honey, and banana, on sprouted bread. I had just bought the flourless sprouted whole wheat berry bread at trader joes when I browsed through the email, and I already had the other ingredients on hand so I had to try it. No clue how many calories it has, but its very filling and gets me all the way to lunch.
My other breakfast option, is the oatmeal or granola cereals in the dry goods (scoop it yourself) section at whole foods. Depending on what you get, its around $2-$4 a pound so definitely competitive with the traditional cereals and much more filling. I'm sure the granola ones have more calories - but if I skimp at breakfast I am grumpy the rest of the day.

Heather, in solidarity with you I had an onion bagel at Bruegger's this morning, and an egg & sausage to go along with it. I'm a professional so don't you try this yourself!

emoticon

Anyway all that means is that I have to be more vigilant today. I've entered what I know I'm eating the rest of the day. Dinner is a bit of a mystery. We're having a program at church called "Three Questions and a Meal" where 6 to 8 folks get together for dinner and to help conversation, there are questions to get us going. I know we'll have some kind of soup for supper and I have a loaf of bread from La Farm bakery in my car to take. There will also be salad. If I just do the salad with virtually no dressing and the soup, I should be okay. I have about 600 calories to work with for supper.

Have a great day everyone!

A bagel is not necessarily a bad thing. Just go and find the nutritional info for a Bruegger's bagel somewhere (it's bound to be a bigger bagel than you ate)& record that and move on. Then buy that box of oatmeal and leave it in your car so it gets to work in the morning!

Spark lesson - don't beat yourself up. Just move on.

grrrr....I was doing so good, I ate my kiwi, drank a glass of milk, and had planned on grabbing a muffin on the way out....well, muffin got left behind, the oatmeal that was supposed to be in my desk was MIA, so I had to settle for a bagel from the cafe, not whole wheat of course, and i'm sure full of fat and calories :( Oh well, tomorrow is another day, right?

Oatmeal with dried fruit sounds great too.

I'm a regular drinker of 4 shots of espresso. Just ask the crew at Caribou!

Ohhh, I haven't had espresso in forever--enjoy it for me!

I have gotten in the habit of having oatmeal with dried fruit cooked in it several times a week. It is "stick to the ribs" nutrition that doesn't seem to spike my blood sugar.

That "within 30 minutes of waking" gets me almost every day. By the time I get up, take my FBS, get dressed, walk my trail, turn on my computer and fix breakfast, I've been up an hour or more. Sometimes if there's a lot of e-mail, it might be two hours. Hmmm...sounds like I should eat before I compute.

Heather, maybe one of your challenges should be getting enough sleep. That's a way of getting up on time. Just a thought.

FYI on Kashi bars - they take a bit of getting used to. If you start with one you don't particularly like, try another kind. They are bit pricey. You might start out by trying the chewy kind, although on the crunchy front, I like the Pumpkin Spice Bars.

Another option would be to bake some healthy muffins and keep them in the freezer for a quick grab.

Pat that's my pitfall, I love, LOVE, everything breakfast, I could eat traditional breakfast food every meal of the day. I think that's why I'm being so stubborn on this, it's sort of like that morning cup of coffee, my day is not started until i've had breakfast food, lol.

I'll check into the Kaski bars, I need to get in more protien, this summer as more fresh fruits come into season I'm thinking fruit smoothie with added protien powder.

I keep a box of oatmeal at my desk at work for those days that I just can't grab anything.

I think one of my challenges should be getting up on time!

Here are some breakfast ideas -

1. Peanut butter & jelly sandwich on whole wheat bread. Roman Meal bread has added calciuim, so you can get your calcium too. You can make it the night before eat that in the car or at your desk when you arrive at work.
2. A Kashi granola bar. These have complext carbohydrates and protein. Again, it is eatable in the car and easy to grab. Have a travel mug? Add a cup of milk.
3. A handful of nuts - almonds are good - and a handful of dried fruit like apricots or dates.

The trick that makes me successful is that my breakfast is fixed the night before so I can grab it from the 'fridge. I eat when I get to work with a bunch of my cronies. They buy food in the cafeteria, but I eat previously frozen berries topped with Dannon non-fat yogurt and a serving of Cascadian Farms granola.

If you go with any of my suggested options for eating on the run, be sure to measure serving sizes and to get into the habit of preparing the food the night before. Since you are a nightowl that might fit into your day a bit better.

Heather--you have made a lot of progress lately on eating better breakfasts. HooRay for you! You know, breakfast doesn't have to be typical breakfast fare. Your body just needs fuel--it will appreciate a turkey sandwich as much as a bowl of cereal! (yes, I have a daughter who always has lunch for breakfast.)

You're doing great! Keep up the good work.

Blessings,
Pat

So I have a lot of trouble making sure I eat breakfast, I'm not a morning person so I usually oversleep and need the time to get ready and walk the dog. I've gotten better about having things around that can be eaten on the go, but sometimes they're not that filling.

I am challenging myself to eat a healthy, filling breakfast before I leave the house.
