At one point in my life I did bike and even asked for a new bike for Christmas. I gained weight and stopped biking because I felt self conscious. I still have the bicycle and you have given me the itch to get back on it. It is an excellent form of exercise.

Talk to your local bike shop...don't worry about price as they can offer SCADS of info and advice before you EVER consider purchasing anything. And the info they offer can steer you in the proper direction for a less expensive used bike.

It's a wonderful and exhilirating way to SPARK! :-)

Ddorn you are amazing! I want to ride 50 next summer. I am in the pacific NW so my winter rides may be indoors. I don't have a bike that fits how I would like. I took my daughters bike to a local church parking lot and red around a few time a couple of weeks ago. My legs are not up for much yet and I am pretty sure that the part of me that was touching the seat is not the part that is supposed to. But, I will find something that fits better and such later. $$ is tight right now so I am not sure how I will work it out. But it is sure fun to dream. I think I can do it.

I love the idea of that kind of freedom.

Go for it!

On 9/25-9/26 I biked 175 miles in two days to raise $$ for multiple sclerosis. I had the TIME OF MY LIFE!!

There is NOTHING that can compare to the THRILL of making such accomplishments on my bike!

I want to get into cycling. I want to get a road bike and eventually enter a Sprint Triathalon.

Holy moly Don, that is AWESIME and inspirational. My 88 year old father bikes to the local elementary school to raid the dumpsters. (OK, dumpster diving runs in the family) (wink)

I was a bike rider as a youngster...I'm looking forward to it in the future.

I've gone pretty much over the edge BIKE CRAZY since joining SP...lol!

I started with just an old hand-me-down Diamondback Wildwood mountain bike that used to be my son's.

Earlier this year I upgraded to a new bike that would carry through some long miles. I love riding my bike out on the road...even traveling roads that have been well-worn driving my car...feels like I *own* the road in a whole new way once I've been able to bike it!

I'm not a speedy rider, generally average around 15 mph. But I love the idea of being able to ride distances. I commute to work on my bike 2-3 times a week (when I'm not working late, as I don't want to take risks riding in the dark), which is an 18 mile round trip. Earlier this summer I picked a WHOPPER of a challenge: I'm going to bike in the City-to-Shore event to raise donations for Multiple Sclerosis. It's at the end of Sept. and I'll be biking from Philadelphia to Ocean City, NJ...75 miles, and then 25 miles sight-seeing around NJ and after crashing for the night? Back to Phillie for ANOTHER 75 miles for a grand total of 175 miles...!

I've been gearing up for this by getting out with my local bike club. Earlier this summer I biked 38 miles one day and 44 miles the next out in the Finger Lakes. A couple weeks ago I biked 66 miles in the Catskill Mountains (SWOOPED down that mountain going 48 mph...woo WEE!). Going to do 57 miles this Sunday crossing over the NY / PA border and back.

I am HYPER careful on the road and in unfamiliar situations if I'm feeling shaky at all at an intersection I'll get off and walk it. I ride my bike like I do my car, stopping at all stop signs & red lights. I don't have too much stuff on my bike yet, but will be adding things like panniers and a rear-view mirror (either on the bike or my helmet, not sure yet). Also probably a speedometer / odometer sometime...so I don't have to rely on others to tell me how fast I'm whizzing down those hills...lol!

Feel free to SparkMail me more questions, thoughts about riding out on the road or cycling in general.

I'm hoping to build up my trips to a point where I can ride multiple days, through several states. That will be SUCH a THRILL!

Don

ps, love kayaking too! Discovered this since joining SparkPeople...haven't the $$$ to buy one for myself just yet, but it is definitely on my list!

I want to do that to. I am going to work up to a 50 miler. But, I am kind of uncomfortable on an outside bike. I ride on a stationary bike right now.

Great question Sassy, I've been inquiring about biking on my local Spark team. I found out there is a local club that starts you from the beginning like fitting you with bike options and learning the basic rules of the road.

I'm planning on checking it out when the next class begins.

Check out your local scene. emoticon

Hi, gang!
Does anyone bike outside? If you do , would you share how you got started and which types of equipment you found most helpful? I'm curious and wonder if I might enjoy it...if I can get over the idea of sticking out like a sore thumb.
