Thank you. It really helps me to feel needed, and I probably enjoy the experience more than they do!

I've been volunteering for almost a year now, once or twice a month, to lead crafts for residents in the memory care unit at a local nursing home. I've found it very rewarding to be able to work with these older adults who seem to enjoy the interaction and personal attention as much as the crafts that we do.

Each time I try to choose a craft that won't be too difficult for them to complete within the hour, as well as something that might spark a memory with them. This past week some of them talked about their mothers as they created a Mother's Day craft, and it was bittersweet to hear one man (probably in his 80s) say that he was going to send it to his mother. This man's wife stays by his side during our craft sessions to encourage and help him, and she quickly went right along with him, agreeing that they could mail it to his mother who obviously was very alive to him that day.

Do any of you also work with Alzheimer's patients? If so, I'd like to hear about your experiences and maybe exchange some craft ideas.
