THANK YOU ALL CLIMBERS! I am on the Patient Services Committee of LLS, and last year I helped at an info booth for the climb but have not done it yet.

Please add me as a friend, and you can check out my latest blog about my daughter's story in an LLS letter - I thought I should keep my page semi-private to Friends because of some info related to my daughter.

I'll consider joining your team, but it's always a challenge for me to get to Seattle and find childcare for my daughter.

Again, all the folks affected by leukemias and lymphomas thank you!!!

I want to do this! I climbed 20 stories today and it was HARD! I figure I'll do 20 this week, 30 next week and add 10 stories each week until I am doing the same amount of steps as the Columbia Tower. My husband is game too!

I wish I could do this. It sounds like it could be fun. I have knee problems and have been ordered not to take stairs if at all possible. Hopefully I will be able to join in another local event in the future.

Hi Ann! Thanks for all the info,I just register so the 50 thing means I have to at least raise 50 for the whole race? I know that must be a dumb Question?well if that's the case then I can raise way more than that! I thought it meant the donations have to be 50.00 and no lower per person. Well anyway I got confused. I will check out your page and your training blog.I dont have a stair master but I plan on finding a business that would let me use their stairs, to train. Well I am very excited and happy I have a goal. I have never done any fundraising so I will have ?'s Thanks for your reply. ~Carolmarol

Carol, the registration fee of about $40 has to be paid when you register. The fundraising takes place between when you register and a couple of weeks after the event. I don't remember the exact deadline, but that gives you a ballpark date. You are required to raise at least $50. I'm sure that everyone trains differently, but if you go back through my old blog entries you'll find mine from last year on the Big Climb, which covers my training in a fair amount of detail. You really must climb stairs, whether actual or virtual (stairmaster) in order to do this. No amount of time on a treadmill will prepare you for this many stairs. All that said, we'd love to have you and anyone else who may be interested join us!

Ann

If you plan on being part of Spark the Stairs!, don't wait too long to sign up. They reached maximum capacity early last year and had to end registration.

Spark the Stairs is already up to 6 members, wooo-hooo!

Tess,
Thanks for running this for us! In addition to the members of this team, there are a few more people I know - member of the Seattle team and locals I know from other teams - who are interested in doing the Big Climb. I'm not sure how many we'll end up with, but I'm looking forward to finding out. Yes, lets all wear SP t-shirts! For those who don't own one yet, you have plenty of time to acquire one before March!

I'm doing the Winter Pineapple Classic on Nov. 14 (team 5k with obstacles), which is also a Leukemia and Lymphoma Society event, so it makes sense to me that they've decided not to have Big Climb registration start before that event is over.

As I've said before, I plan to race this year. I'm not planning to be fast - my goal is not to be last in my age group. Its more a matter of being timed so that I can use that as a tool. Since I'll turn 49 in March, 2010 is my last year in the 40-49 age group. Unlike a lot of other events, the older age groups for the Big Climb get faster (clearly slower folks opt out as they get older), so this may be my last year to not be last.

I'd suggest that anybody who hasn't already go into my blog entries and look for the one about the Big Climb, as I go into detail on my training for last year's climb. Perhaps some of us can get together a few times to train? I work in downtown Seattle and have 24/7 access to the building I work in, plus I have some other stairs I've used for stair training. I'd also suggest that we buddy up for the event. I did my first Big Climb with a friend and she almost literally dragged my butt up those stairs, so I know that a buddy can make ALL the difference between finishing or not.

WooHoo! Looking forward to having a great team and a great time with all of you!

Ann

HEY SPARKERS! This is Tess, formerly known as MEANMUMMY, now known as FITMUMMY2B!

Bigclimb.org now says that online registeration will start November 16, so we have a couple more weeks to wait.

But I'm here and I'm watching and as soon as it opens, I will register "Spark the Stairs!" for our second annual BIG CLIMB!

How many people will plan on wearing their SparkPeople shirts? I think it would be cool, at least for a team picture at the beginning, plus it makes it easier to find each other. :o)

Zingy, I've started training too. I did 5 minutes on the stair machine at the gym last Wednesday (9 flights) and 6 minutes on Thursday (11 flights). Man, it kicks my ARSE and puts my heart rate into the stratosphere!

Last year I only made it to the 26th floor or so...I pooped out too early, but I saw a good excuse and grabbed it (going down with a fellow team members young daughter so she wasn't alone). This year I AM making it to the top! ALL THE WAY!

TTFN!

Even though Tess is in WA she isn't a member of this team. I have asked her to become one as soon as she registers the Spark The Stairs team so she can post and let everyone know the team is up and running as I will be out of town from Oct 29- Nov 7.

My SparkFriend Tess (MEANMUMMY) and I had a team last year called Spark The Stairs.

We plan to particpate again this year.

Tess aka Teresa Glidden will be our team captain.

We would LOVE to have extra team members!

A huge SparkTeam would be just awesome!

I'm glad to hear that a team can have both Racers & Climbers.

I will be a Climber myself... GRIN!

I'm off to check out your blogs... TTFN!

I posted this for the Seattle team, but I realize that there are a lot of people who live in or near Seattle but don't belong to the team. (we'd love to have you!) So, cross-posting seems like a good idea.

Registration opens for this event Nov. 1. www.bigclimb.org I think I remember Seattle team members having a team last year, so if you were involved in that I'd be interested in hearing how that went and whether you plan to participate again this year.

Several people have told me that they'd like to do it, so I'm going to start a team as soon as registration opens, unless the team members from last year want to do it again and pick up some extra team members. The only requirement for teams is that we have at least 4 team members, which I don't think will be a problem. There are two categories for the event - racers and climbers. Racers are timed, climbers are not, and climbers and racers are in different stairwells. The team can consist of both racers and climbers, so don't think that you need to be fast to be part of the team. I finished in about 25 minutes last year as a climber. When I looked at the racer's results and realized that I wouldn't have been last in my age group, I decided to register as a racer this year. I would love to meet up with a bunch of Seattle Sparkers at the top!

The particulars - The event takes place in the Columbia Tower in downtown Seattle. You climb 69 stories(1311 steps) in the stairwells. Last year's registration fee was $35. They only allow 5,000 to register and they met that number last year well before the event. Participants are required to raise $50 per person. The event benefits the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Registering as a team will get us a team start time, though they do warn that people who register late for the team may be assigned later times.

If you look at my blog entries, I have one from last year on how I trained for this and how it went. If you train properly - I started outside and then used the stairwells of my office building during the last month - this is doable for most of us. Last year my goal was to finish. This year its to end up somewhere around the middle of my age group. This is the sort of event that people tend to quit doing as they get older, so the older age groups are faster. I'll be 49 for the 2010 one. After this, I'll have to keep getting faster or I'll be last in my age group, so we can already tell what my goal for 2011 will be, right?
