becky,
i'm so glad buddy is adjusting to his new food !! it sounds like a great food, it's not available here. i know you'll be so happy for his beard to be white again. maybe it will be white in time for his christmas photos !!!

i have given kirby and la la la greenies a couple of times but when they cam thru un digested i never bought them again. i get them booda bones, they are made of corn starch. they love to clean their teeth with them better than the greenies.
that reminds me i just found the cutest video of kirby and la la la when they were younger. eli was playing around with them in the recliner... he had some dental floss and held it out to them and told them to floss their teeth and they tried to..... it was so cute!!! then he got invisible food and fed it to them and they actually ate it !!! they would eat anything he would give them and i had told him i bet they would even eat invisible food if it came from him...so he tried it and they did !!! lol
they are so entertaining!!! lol

i had posted before that he had fed them ice cream every night and kirby needed sparks for pets to lose his 2 pounds gained. well here's the update: kirby listened and has lost half a pound so far. i banned ice cream and have made him walk more. eli went back to work and lost his 6 pounds in one week. it will take kirby a long time to lose his 2 pounds !!!
i wish there really was a sparks for pets

snow for thanksgiving is nice, we rarely get snow in alabama. i've never had a white christmas either.
you deserve a big rest with all the work you've done getting ready for thanksgiving. i hope you have a wonderful time. it's amazing to be able to get everyone together at the same time.
did you track all the calories you've burned??? i'm surprised you're not laying down with your arms and legs in slings from all the hard work. you're a wonderful mom to do all you do, i hope your family knows how special you are !!

Update on Buddy:

Buddy saw his Vet today. I talked to her about his red beard. She said that most of the time moisture is what causes this, caused by the yeast that breeds in warm-wet places. She said that eating or drinking from plastic has nothing to do with it, nor does any of the foods, unless there is a food allergy.

She was 110% in agreement with me changing his food to the Orijen suggested by Maureen. She said that she thinks that is an excellent food, especially because of its high Omega-3 content (Orijen-6).

She told me to use a 50/50 solution of hydrogen peroxide & water daily to clean his beard and I should see results within a few weeks.

She did have a product that is used like "Angle Eyes", but we are only making one change at a time (changing his food) to see if I get any results.

Buddy has been prone to bouts of pancreatitis which was one of the reasons that I decided stop feeding him from the table or even cooking him his own chicken. By taking control and only feeding him the kibble I want to know exactly what he is eating. ie; spices, etc.

She also said that she has lost faith in 'Greenies' after this last seminar she attended. They aren't very biodegradable, and that concerns her.

So there you have it! Any questions? Buddy is feeling good after his shot, and he did eat a little tonight. He is over weight right now... sustained on Greenies and peanut butter... So I think he needs to sign up for a weight loss program with Spark People!

Feels like snow. House is clean and Thanksgiving is right around the corner. I'M READY!! FEELS GREAT!!

it could have been the food, the water in plastic or a combination of both.
i started looking at pictures of westies on the internet before i got kirby and there are tons of pictures of them with the stained beards. with so many of them with it you would think someone would have come up with both a reason for it and products to make it go away.
i can't say what does cause it, but all i do know is i read that before i got kirby about the water and food in the plastic so they haven't drank or eaten from a plastic bowl and haven't had the staining. they have had the beet in their foods tho. let us know what your vet says so if kirby and la la la do get it i want to know what to do.

my problem with kirby and la la la is my dh has been off from work with a broken finger since the middle of august and has been eating ice cream nightly and feeding it to them. i told dh he has gained weight, he weighed and has gained 6 pounds. we weighed kirby and he has gained 2 pounds !!!!!!!!!!!!! la la la keeps running away and hiding so we haven't weighed her yet. i said absolutly no more ice cream !!!
i just changed their dog food to california natural and they like it. i put 1 cup full in their bowls. it gets a little of chicken or a little treat for topping to get them started eating. they have either pup aroni or beggin strips for a treat.what else can i do to help them get the weight off other than walking???? i need sparks for pets !!!!!!!

Well, Buddy was (is) starving. Whining around wanting peanut butter. I have not given in. The kibble is in his bowl. He has eaten it a little, especially if I leave some on the place mat. (Strange) OH THE CAT LOVES IT!

Debra, Buddy LOVES grilled chicken. I think that is what got us to this point of not eating kibble in the first place! But one night won't hurt. I hope he enjoyed it.

Funny thing about this staining on Buddy. He had been fine. This summer I setup water for him on the deck. It is plastic. I used it when I had my black schnauzer, and never noticed there was staining on his whiskers, but now that I'm thinking about it... the 'black' was 'red' tinged. Hmmm.

Anyway, I put that water container away. Buddy only drinks from ceramic, and eats from metal. Both get washed daily.

Also, I changed his food this summer. He was being so picky that I thought I'd just buy whatever looked interesting from the market, instead of from the Vet. Hmmm. Mistake.

He was so beautiful and white before this summer... that's got to be the reason.

He's due to see the Vet next month. I will ask what she has to say. All that I've been reading it sounds like it is very common. Cutting out all the grains, and cheaper foods with beet pulp will help.
emoticon
Enjoy visiting with my dear sweet Buddy... He may be picky, but he is a sweetie. Remember to put "Fragile" on the Red Suitcase before shipping him off!

sorry becky,
dh had just grilled chicken when buddy arrived and so he did have some chicken !! lol
i wrote all about his adventure in the daily chat, thanks for letting him come for a visit, we so enjoyed him !!!

maureen i have read it was caused by the saliva and i've heard it was from eating and drinking from plastic bowls. i also read before that whenever the cause is eliminated it takes 6 months to grow out.

Becky, Any luck getting Buddy to eat?

We took the 4 to the vet yesterday for their shots and I asked the vet about the staining. She said there isn't really anything you can do about it, it's the saliva glands. She said to try washing the corners of the mouth where the hair is growing out dark with water a couple times a day. There is a fold in the corner of their mouths where the saliva glands are. I guess it's worth a try.

BTW: I sent him on a trip in the Red Suitcase to visit all of you! Debra was the first one to be blessed!! ENJOY!! Oh... he will be hungry... don't give in... kibble is in his future... and NOTHING ELSE!!

Becky, I hope the food doesn't smell like poo or something dead to make him want to roll on it, lol. (I find ours smells really strong) I would put the food down for him and don't give him anything else. He will eventually eat when he gets hungry enough. This sounds mean but it really isn't.

Quick note to let you know Maureen's Orijen Dog Food just arrived. I opened up the bag and held out a couple pieces for Buddy to look at while I praised him telling him it was a "treat for Buddy!" He wasn't impressed!! Then I laid the kibble down on the floor telling him that it was a "treat for Buddy!" ... and he rolled in it!! LOL!! SIGH!! This dog!! What am I going to do??

This dog food looks really good! It may become MY favorite choice to TRY and feed this fussy little Westie of mine!!

we have a lake full of fish but we never go fishing !! dh uncle had went on a fishing trip and gave him the fish so he grilled it. i was surprised how much kirby and la la la was gobbling it up. i guess we can give them some for a special treat.
that's terrible your foster is allergic to chicken and turkey. that's kirby & la la la's favorite thing to eat on top of their dog food. i got them a bag of chicken pup aroni for halloween. it's the first time i've seen it, we have been getting the regular. they seem to like it too.

Debra, just a comment on the fish diet. Since Westies come from Scotland where fish is a main food staple I'm sure they're survived on fish for centuries! It makes sense to me that they would like it and I've never know a westie to be allergic to fish. Our current foster has a list of allergies and on it is chicken and turkey. I was surprised at that, but I guess anything is possible. I'm glad that your little ones are back to a better diet too. They'll probably start feeling better too.(that can be good and bad!)

i hadn't heard of that dog food. i looked it up and isn't available here. i have been gradually increasing the california natural into the wholemsome melody and kirby and la la la have been gobbling it up!! i'm so glad they like it again !!

their light back streak shows up more after they are trimmed too. but since all westies have it from the westie ancestor pool when they were from cairns etc., and they aren't show dogs, it doesn't bother me. i'm just glad they haven't gotten the red beards and hope they don't.

thanks y'all for posting everything that helps our westies. we always learn something new and helpful !!becky if you hadn't posted what the ingredients of your dog food was, i wouldn't have checked and found out mine's was bascially garbage !!! now they are back to a good dog food again !!

I just ordered a Trial sample on-line of this dog food for Buddy. I got the fish one for him to try. I sure hope he will eat it! He seems to really like fish. The other night we had trout and he loved it!

Buddy has those dark hair on the side his lower lips. I've been keeping it trimmed and seems to be not as dark.

The hair on his back seems to only look off white in color right after I have trimmed him, and only when the light catches in a certain way. Now that the fresh cut has grown out, I don't notice it. I'm sure if I took the time to pull his hair it wouldn't show up off white at all. But who has the time for that?

Thanks for the information, Maureen. You are our 'Go To Gal'!

Hugs!
Becky

I just noticed this thread and thought I'd reply. I have all four of mine on a totally grain free diet. Their dog food is by Orijen, it a white fish formula. All of their treats are also grain free. This has really helped with their allergies. No more itching. Two of mine have the dark hair coming out of the corners of their mouth. This actually is not a fault, (in showing westies), handlers don't chalk the dogs beard. They use chalk and a conditioner to make their coat a little whiter and to give it substance. That's why show westies always have such a round face. I do occasionally trim just the dark hair. Eventually it will grow back in white. It does take awhile though. The only place I trim is just the corners, I don't trim where it has spread to the beard. That grows out.

I know some show handlers will bleach the hair, this is not good for the dog or the hair. The light brown down the back is considered a fault when showing a westie, this is where the chalk helps. On mine the darker hair lightens in the summer since they like to lay out in the sun.

Hope this helps.

The breeder had her dogs on a holistic dog food, and sent a bag home with us. I don't recall the name. It was hard for me to find, so I switched to the food my Vet recommended. Then I moved on to store bought food... now he has a red beard!

Corn is a No-no for Westies who have tendencies towards allergies, and I totally forgot about those recommendations too when I switched to store food.

So here I am, thinking the Vet food is where I need to be again. Buddy doesn't eat much anyway. He's a picky eater. Last night he got plain white rice and chicken thighs, and there is still food in his dish. He has been hard to figure, but he weighs over 20 pounds so he is NOT starving! SIGH. Just an ugly red beard. LOL!

Thanks everyone for doing all this research for me.

I blogged this morning about grooming him yesterday. What I didn't mention in the blog was I had the thought to just take the clippers and shave him all over to get rid of that beard!! LOL!! It was just a passing thought... I'd NEVER do that! LOL!!

We feed ours Wellness Simple Salmon and Rice. We buy it at PetCo. Ours do not have staining. Our foster does, but he was on Royal Canin Venison & potato. We now have him switched over to the wellness, but it's only been a few days. I have one westie that had tummy and skin allergies, so I couldn't feed the Wellness supermix as it has barley in it that bothered her tummy. So we went to the Wellness simple. The Natural Balance food is good also and they have allergy brands as well. It can be tricky with these little ones!

i looked up online california natural and science diet for 2 more comparisons:

Ingredients
chicken meal and rice formula:

Chicken Meal
Chicken meal is the dry rendered (cooked down) product from a combination of clean flesh and skin with or without accompanying bone, derived from the parts of whole carcasses of chicken -- exclusive of feathers, heads, feet, or entrails.

Natura uses high-quality chicken meal in many of our foods as an excellent source of protein.

Brown Rice
The whole rice kernel containing the nutrient-rich bran with only the rice hull removed.

Brown Rice is rich in numerous nutrients like B-vitamins, magnesium, and fatty acids.

Rice
Rice, unless listed as brown rice, is the de-hulled rice kernel, without the bran -- known as white rice.

Sunflower Oil
(naturally preserved with mixed Tocopherols) Sunflower oil is obtained by extracting oil from sunflower seeds.

Natura uses sunflower oil to provide the essential fatty acid, linoleic acid, which is important for good skin and coat health.

Flaxseed
Flaxseed is the whole seed of the flax plant.

Flaxseed is a good source of both soluble and insoluble fiber. Together these fibers aid in digestion and help to maintain good stool consistency. Flaxseed is also an excellent source of omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids (such as alpha-linolenic acid). These fatty acids help produce the soft, luxuriant coat on your pet for which Natura is known.

Natural Flavors
Natural flavors are flavor ingredients that do not contain synthetic or artificial components.

In the Natura products that include "natural flavor" in the formula, the exact composition is proprietary. However, it is always made from high quality all natural ingredients, consistent with Natura's nutritional philosophy.

Potassium Chloride
A chemical compound, KCl, a colorless or white, cubic, crystalline compound that closely resembles common salt (sodium chloride). It is soluble in water, alcohol, and alkalies.

Potassium plays various roles in metabolism and body functions. It assists in the regulation of the acid-base balance and water balance in the blood and the body tissue. It assists in protein synthesis from amino acids and in carbohydrate metabolism.

Salt
Salt is a natural mineral, necessary for life and good health.

Salt provides several essential nutrients, such as sodium and chloride, as well as important trace minerals. The average sodium level in our food and treats is currently 0.9 g/Mcal, which is considered low by industry standards, but still supplies the nutrients your pet's body requires.

Vitamins
Vitamins are organic compounds that function as parts of enzyme systems essential for the transmission of energy and the regulation of metabolisms of the body.

AAFCO regulates minimum standard quantities of vitamins in levels that pets need to survive. All pet food manufacturers supplement their products with vitamins. Beyond meeting these minimum requirements, all Natura products contain a complete vitamin and mineral supplement program that helps pets to thrive, not just survive. Included in our foods are some of the following vitamins and minerals: Ascorbic Acid, Beta Carotene, Biotin, Calcium Carbonate, Calcium Iodate, Choline Chloride, Cobalt Carbonate, Cobalt Proteinate, Copper Proteinate, d-Calcium Pantothenate, Dicalcium Pantothenate, dl-Methionine, Iron Proteinate, Manganese Proteinate, Niacin, Potassium Chloride, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Riboflavin, Thiamine Mononitrate, Vitamin A Supplement, Vitamin B12 Supplement, Vitamin C Supplement (Sodium Ascorbate), Vitamin D3 Supplement, Vitamin E Supplement (Alpha Tocopherol), Zinc Proteinate Natura adds these important vitamins and minerals, in proper balance to its foods to ensure that your pet gets all the necessary nutrients for life and good health every day.

Beyond meeting these minimum requirements, all Natura products contain a complete vitamin and mineral supplement program that helps pets to thrive, not just survive. The minerals Natura uses are chelated, providing three to ten times greater assimilation than common minerals.

I know I could cover it up, but I really want to figure out what is causing it, too. I can get Royal Canin from my Vet and his beard wasn't red when I was feeding that. I think it must be the beet pulp that is in the kibble. Look at all the ingredients... I think they all have beet pulp added... but the corn!! I was trying to avoid corn and there I was feeding it! YIKES!! Corn is bad for their allergies. SIGH! My brain went into a coma and I quit thinking clearly! SIGH!

I used to feed Buddy Royal Canin. I think I will again.

YIKES! I never looked at the ingredients. There it is!! Beet Pulp!! Also, Corn meal is number 2! Sorghum is the same a molasses! But it seems to me this all began BEFORE I started feeding this. I can't remember what the other food was that I tried. He doesn't eat very well, and buying dog food is a sore subject in our household!

Ingredients:
Chicken, Corn Meal, Ground Whole Grain Sorghum, Chicken By-Product Meal, Dried Beet Pulp, Chicken Flavor, Chicken Fat (preserved with mixed Tocopherols, a source of Vitamin E), Potassium Chloride, Dried Egg Product, Brewers Dried Yeast, Salt, Calcium Carbonate, Caramel, Flax Meal, Choline Chloride, Fructooligosaccharides, Minerals (Ferrous Sulfate, Zinc Oxide, Manganese Sulfate, Copper Sulfate, Manganous Oxide, Potassium Iodide, Cobalt Carbonate), Vitamins (Vitamin E Supplement, Ascorbic Acid, Vitamin A Acetate, Calcium Pantothenate, Biotin, Thiamine Mononitrate (source of vitamin B1), Vitamin B12 Supplement, Niacin, Riboflavin Supplement (source of vitamin B2), Inositol, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride (source of vitamin B6), Vitamin D3 Supplement, Folic Acid), L-Lysine Monohydrochloride, DL-Methionine, Rosemary Extract.

What's in the Iams kibble? Our foster boy has a stained beard. He was on venison & potato by Royal Canin and we've just recently switched him over to salmon & rice. I noticed when I had one of my other westies on a venison kibble her beard was starting to stain also. It's just an idea, I don't really know.

I tried a product 'like' Angel Eyes, because my local pet store didn't carry the original. It didn't seem to work. Maybe I really need to get the original brand.

Buddy's eating routine has never been a good one. He doesn't eat 'dog food' unless he's starving! I started giving him Iam's kibble with probiotics. Do you think? Mostly he eats chicken thighs with white rice... Oh, and peanut butter in his kong. I'm wondering if it's his peanut butter?

Becky, I have heard of others using angel eyes to whiten up any discoloration around the eyes and mouth. I think it's some reaction to their saliva that darkens the fur. The angel eyes changes their saliva so it doesn't discolor. Have you recently changed his diet? Sometimes it can be attributed to what they eat as well.

Sorry I didn't see your question until now. This is how my Vet explained the color difference to me.

Buddy has that 'sandy' color also on his back. If you feel the hair it probably will feel differently than the 'white' hair. Buddy's really shows up when he's been shaved, but as the hair grows out and the course blend with the finer white hair it isn't as noticeable.

My problem right now is Buddy's beard. It is so stained. I can't seem to get it white. It just started this summer when he was sweating so much. He also was spending a lot of time with his nose to the ground out back. I sure wish someone had an answer for fixing this! What do they do to show dogs to keep their beards so white?

kirby and la la la are 6 and they have the dark skin. but if your westie is getting black hair it could be just part of the ancient genepool history of the westie.... cairn terier, scottish terrier, and the dandie dinmont terrier. that is why all westies have that light wheaton color down their backs. hope this helps

You have a Westie who has the skin as a Westie is supposed to have. They are supposed to be dark skin under their white hair. Also there are areas of hair that won't look pristine white because of the type of hair being coarser... so that might look off white. Maybe you are having the clip of your Westie too short if you are seeing his skin.

I'll look for information on the web to help you further if you need.
