Dixie, that is really cute!

Buddy is the same way as far as staying right at my heel when we walk. I worked with him since he was a puppy to never pull away or to get in front. It makes the walk just a joy to be on. Buddy only showed one real fear, and that was when he was a pup the first time we walked on the dam. Once we got onto where it looked liked real wide opened spaces he stopped and put his front paws on me to pick him up! It was so sweet. I did. I carried him for about 10 yards and then put him down. He realized that it was a safe place to be and now he just does wonderful on our walks on the dam.

Just got back from a more than three mile walk with the Westies. Boy are they tired! I took the Aussies on a similar walk yesterday. I think the short Westie legs made them really work hard. My husband came up with a new leash system so they don't get tangled any more. They were good but really slowed down toward home. My legs are tingling and it really feels good! Now that the weather is getting warmer, I think I will do this on my days off from the gym.

My little doggy daughter is very well behaved on our walks (I'm so proud lol). She sticks just behind my heels and never tries to stop or pull ahead of me. Once in a while she'll bark at something to alert me to it but I appreciate that so no complaint. The only real issue we have is that she shies away from those little yard flags and real estate signs. Sometimes she'll get used to them, sometimes it's a daily occurrence. You just never can tell with her.

Thanks for all the new thoughts. From reading them, I have decided to take the dogs (one at a time) for their fitness walks then workout later for my fitness walk. This way we are all happy and I get to spend time with my best friends.

i don't go on "fitness walks", but i do carry kirby joe & la la la out for a walk every 3 hours during the day and then at night at 6, 8, & then the last one at 10:00pm. i use the 26ft flexi leashes and when they stop i keep walking all around them instead of just standing there.

When I'm out doing a fitness walk I always take Buddy. But first I make sure Buddy gets his poop in (he always does this about 3 min into the walk) then we do the walk just as if we were in a dog show! He ALWAYS stays at my side and at my pace. He knows and goes!

He's always with me on any of my walks and this has always been our routine no matter what the pace. I practice this walking style even when I'm not fitness walking with him. I'm the leader of this pack! LOL

When I started two years ago, Jolie kept up with me no matter how long we went (and we'd go over an hour in Houston heat).

This year she turned 9 and she has definitely slowed down a bit. I have to return her to the house halfway through my walk and then go back out by myself. It makes me and her daddy sad.

my westie is a very fast paced walker. I go fast natuarally and he keeps right up with me for the whole time with rare stops for potty break and a sniff here or there. He most of the time would pull my arm off if I would let him.

I take my "faux" Westie (Cairn/Min. Schnauzer) with me on all my walks because she won't let me out of the house without her. She literally drags me down the trail, only stopping occasionally to sniff or mark her spot. In the last 4 days she's walked 19 miles with me and would probably have walked ANOTHER 19. She's crazy about walking. She's probably more hyper than a real Westie, though.

When you are out for a fitness walk, do you take your Westie along or does their constant stopping to explore put a crimp in your style?
It seems that when I take either of my Westies along with me that I'm always stopping and starting. I like to take them, but it seems that they are getting more beneficial exercise than I am.
