The following instructions are from Spark friend, Millie-Milou, who is a groomer in the UK. Thanks for the instructions Millie!

Westie faces are a doddle (if you know what you are doing). You need to think "circles, so you cut a semi circle from the nose end down and round then back up again to behind the dog’s ear. The deepest part of the (slightly more than) semi circle should be below the dogs eye.

Then brush all the facial hair back from the dog’s cheeks. Scissor that same line again but come up in front of the ear. Comb through. Repeat all of this on the other side (not as easy on the 'wrong' side as it is the 'right' side depending on which hand you use to cut)

For the top of the head. Part the hair across the middle of the head from mid ear to mid ear the other side. So you have a forward half and a back half. Comb all this back half hair up into a sort of bunch and scissor from the back to the front - low to high so the middle of the head has longer hair on than the back. Turn dog around and do the same at the front. Turn dog back around and part hair centrally from mid eye backwards (so he looks like a hippy :) ) Do the same cut, leaving long hair in middle, shorter at sides. Do both sides.

To tidy the veranda (fringe, visor or what ever you call it over in the US) comb out trim around in a kind of semi circle from side to side. Not too short or poor Buddy will look surprised for weeks until it grows again. not too long or he'll develop a squint (just joking about a squint).

If in doubt, take less rather than more. You cannot put it back once its cut off.
