I know! I've been v e r y slow here. It's no reflection on MacDuff. I work, go to school, and I got pneumonia last month and haven't bounced back yet. But MacDuff is quite a little chap, and he deserves a shout out, so here goes .....

My mother has always had large poodles, which are natural people-pleasers. When her last poodle companion died, she got it into her head that westies are super cute and would make a good addition to our family.

MacDuff was born on March 31, 2001, and he was all of two pounds when he joined us. He was fierce and feisty from the get-go, and it quickly became clear that he and Mum were not well matched. She was going to give him to a shelter (???!) and although I lived in an apartment that didn't take pets, I moved just so he could come live with me.

MacDuff is extremely expressive and knows how to make his thoughts known. He can be stoic but feels things deeply, and when his little feeling are hurt, he lets me know ... usually by "spritzing" my pillow! (I guess he doesn't know where to get a hold of horses' heads!)

Speaking of horses, MacDuff was born on a farm and has a special affinity for farm animals, especially horses. He enthusiastically greets horses, donkeys, cows, and goats and gets excited if he sees them on television.

Because my work requires frequent transfers, MacDuff has called England, Tajikistan, Tunisia, Lebanon, and America home. He is a real trooper and makes friends everywhere we live. In many places in the MIddle East, people don't have dogs as pets and are afraid of them. MacDuff was a canine ambassador, impressing them with his manners, which is kind of astonishing when one considers that he failed puppy kindergarten -- twice! In Beirut, I'd leave my door unlocked, and people would come and visit him. I'd come home and find notes on my door, saying things like, "MacDuff doing taxes with Anita" or "MacDuff playing poker with the boys." One evening, as I was walking home, I looked up at a balcony above me and saw the little guy looking back He was waiting for steaks to come off Larry's grill! Larry had never invited me over even once, and I was actually a little jealous that my dog had more of a social life than I did!

When MacDuff celebrated his big 1-0 in Beirut, I threw him a HUGE party! emoticon Lebanese are a chic people, and I called it the "10 is the new 7" party. I hired a bartender to keep the drinks coming in the kitchen, had a clown entertaining kids (and adults) on the front balcony, had guys grilling hot dogs on the back balcony, and filled two long tables with snacks and treats all along the theme of a 10 year-old boy's birthday. More than 70 people came, and several Lebanese people adopted dogs after spending an afternoon with the birthday boy, who was a charming and adorable host.

He wasn't always so easy to live with though. He was a holy terror when he was young and fast. He had a mind of his own and bowed to no one, no matter how often he felt the back of my hair brush on his plump little behind! One evening, I hosted a dinner party. After dinner, we were in the family room when I heard noise coming from the dining room. I checked and discovered my little pork chop standing ON the table up to his shoulders in the chicken cutlets. I grabbed him, spanked his bottom and sent him to his crate. Unrepentant, he licked his chops and burped.

Another time, he slipped out when the gate wasn't closed properly and took off down the main road in Dushanbe, Tajikistan's capital. It was still pretty dangerous there then, so we travelled with security. I had to enlist several guards to ride with me to chase him, which only delighted him more. He dashed to the President's Palace and slipped through the wrought iron fence. We couldn't get in, and the guards were in a panic as MacDuff danced around them. They screamed at me, "Is he dangerous? Does he bite?" I was amazed, seeing as they had AK47s over their shoulders. Eventually, we convinced him to hop in the car for a ride home. I'm sure when he wrote in his doggie journal that night, he said it was the Best Day Ever!

Today, MacDuff is pushing 14 and couldn't out run me if he tried. He's an old man, a sweet spirit, a naughty delight, and a wonderful companion. I'm really lucky my mother doesn't know squat about terriers.

So there you have it, a little bit about my buddy MacDuff. emoticon

Shayla came into our household shortly after we lost a westie puppy to kidney disease. We had a young westie and two older ones and the younger one desperately needed someone younger to play with as she was pestering the older ones to no end! Shayla was in our rescue, having been surrendered by a military family when the father received overseas orders and the family was left behind. She was and is quite the handfull! She's very intense in both her play and hunt. She's the only one of our four that has caught a mouse along with several toads (ewww). She's the smallest of our dogs and has a more pointed appearance than the others. She is extremely loyal and adores attention. She mothers all the other dogs after thoroughly putting them in their place of course! emoticon

Bailey is the only boy in our household of four westies. He was our very first westie! We had been without any pets for a few years and researched what breed we may want to have and after encountering several westies at local Scottish festivals decided that was the breed for us! We couldn't locate any around our area but went online and found him at a rescue on the far east side of our state. We drove the 3+ hours to look at him and brought him home with us. The rescue had found him wandering the streets and took him in. He's a joy and such a gentleman. He loves running after and chasing squirrels, birds, balls and his siblings! It difficult to believe that he'll be 10 in March, he still acts like a young dog. Thanks to him our current adventure of westie ownership and rescue began!

Oh my these are some really sad stories! I just came across some of the pictures of Buddy on the day we picked him up. Would anyone like to see them? He was so cute. One floppy ear. He was the last one of the group to have his ears all stand up!

Our Kaylee is now 7 years old and we've had her for four years. She's also a resuce that came to our organization from a "breeder" (puppy mill) out in a rural area. She was saved by a neighbor as the "breeder" said he was going to shoot her since her puppies didn't survive. We had recently lost one of our westies and this little girl just fit into the family perfectly. She has her Daddy wrapped around her little paw and is very loving and sweet, although she loves to give her sisters a hard time!

Tuffy was born outside in an ice storm in January of 2008 and was the only one in her litter to survive. She was born in a puppy mill and luckily Oklahoma Westie Rescue took her & her mother in before they both froze to death. Tuffy was extremely malnourished and the rescue almost lost her several times. She's a fighter though and survived & thrived with hand feedings and love. She was named Tuffy for her survival skills! We adopted her when she was about 4 months old. She's full of "terriertude" as we call it. She's very vocal & holds a grudge if you upset her. We have four westies and she's the only one who aroos. We love her spunkiness. She will dance around treats before eating them & makes us laugh every day. We're very grateful for her & the rescue who saved her life.

Getting to know Buddy:

Buddy was born June 17, 2007 in Sacramento to 'Honky Tonk Hank' & 'Honky Tonk Little Jazz' in a litter of 5 - 2 males & 3 female Westies. Both Buddy's parents were Champions, and Buddy had originally been given the name "Bocephus" ... or in other words he was 'Hank Junior'. Rich and I both chose to change his name to 'Buddy' (RN14268004) Not very original, but it fit for him and with our family better than 'Bo'.

It wasn't long before we realized that Buddy had something going on with his digestion because he would become sick frequently with bouts of dry heaves and diarrhea especially after stress or eating any gluten products.

Months turned into years of changing foods and trying different medications, all seemed hopeless. As soon as we realized he had a problem we knew that we needed to have him neutered and not pass this trait on to the next generation of West Highlands.

It wasn't until 2013 after a stressful day with a groomer that his problem became so acute that we almost lost him. Days turned into weeks and months of him being sick all the time. He had quit eating and drinking. I took him to the Vet and no apparent problem was found.

He ended up loosing 1/2 his body weight and was down to 12 pounds. He didn't have enough strength to even walk up or down stairs! We were at the end of trying to find an answer and I was faced with the possibility of putting him down.

The Vet worked tirelessly to find the problem, but my pockets weren't deep enough to put Buddy through all the tests that could prove definitive, so she went with what she thought it looked mostly like - especially since no tumors or other possible reasons were not found. With the persistence of a wonderful Vet it was determined that Buddy suffered from Inflammatory Bowel Disease (not to be confused with IBS).

Long story short: Buddy is now on a strict diet of a Royal Canin Hypoallergenic dry food that I enhance with cooked white meat chicken. We try to avoid all stressful situations for him - this is why I now am his groomer. Occasionally he needs medication, but he has gained back all his weight and is very rarely sick anymore.

Buddy has really become a great dog for our family. I've had many dogs and a wide variety of breeds, but he is the best in my book, and everyone loves him.

Bella was born on January 14,2007 in Heber Springs, Arkansas but we adopted her on March 25,2007. She is came at a time when I had a relapse of my MS in June of 2007 and I started having seizures so she learned to detect when I was going to have a seizure before I did. So now she is able to detect them and leads me to safety before I fall most times. I wouldn't trade her companionship for anything.

On one of my other the team leader started picking a pet of the week. I'd like to start that here. Submit your Puppy's name for consideration. Have a picture of the Puppy in your photo gallery. It's OK if the picture has more than one Puppy in it - just let me know which one you want considered. You can submit more than one Puppy's name.

All you have to do is post here if you would like your dog to be featured as "PUPPY OF THE WEEK", add their name to the list on the thread that is listed as Puppy of the week along with at little write up about your Puppy and add a picture of your Puppy to our Photo Gallery or point me to a link to the photo on your page that you want me to use. When your Puppy is chosen their picture will be featured as the icon for the Westie Team for that week so get your pictures submitted this is will be done on a first come first serve basis. I'm looking forward to seeing all those beautiful Puppies.
