becky,
i googled "exercises while holding a baby" and there are several sites listed you can check out and find some you would be comfortable trying. i do know a lot of women just sit on a resistance ball and gently rock and bounce and that strenghtens your core muscles. emoticon

Great Job everyone!! Making new habits! Next we can start on exercise. You think? LOL I have been so bad at getting those cardio minutes in since watching the baby. DD will be on a budget cut back schedule beginning July so I will have Tuesday, Friday, Saturday & Sundays to Spark and walk my butt off! Maybe our next Healthy Challenge should be strength training... I wouldn't have any excuses ... lifting a ten pound baby... up... down... up.... down... LOL

thanks becky for the challenge.
i learned you can make up for eating homemade deep fried french fries on the first day by getting determined to finish out the rest of the week with no junk food. i watched my dh & my ds eat every junk food there is and if that wasn't enough i had a 4 day battle with a birthday cake !!! to make it all worth it was ending up losing 2 pounds !! and the strange thing, i've gone 2 extra days without junk food..... maybe i should have did it as a streak

I dont know if the yoga is helping or not. I have done two sessions now and both times I hurt so bad and seems like I cant get to the end of the DVD. I am going to try one more DVD...yoga for dummies and see if that will be slow enough for me at the beginning stage.

Quite impressive! I am so lucky not to have people eating junk food around me. I usually go to bed so early that the party starts without me! Right now it is especially easy because I am at my son's house and he was born without a sweet tooth and his wife is trying to lose baby weight so there are no goodies to be found. I'd love to keep it that way at our house but they keep sneaking in all by themselves! Seriously,way to go and good luck today! As Marie Antoinette once said, this birthday... let them eat fruit and veggies! emoticon

today dh went to a cow sell and so i didn't have him eating junk food, however, ds ate new flavors of chips, reese's peanut butter cups and later ice cream with mini peanut butter cups in it... but i succeeded in resisting by eating fruit and almonds!! thank God for nuts, they really work !!! now tomorrow is the birthday cake ...... emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

Wow, Debra, you are truly an inspiration for the rest of us who have absolutely no willpower when it comes to peanut butter cups! I don't know how you did it! My peanut butter cups finally ran out today, then my son got peanut butter M&M's! I just told my dd to go split them with her brother and hide them from me!

A BIG emoticon and a emoticon for showing such incredible fortitude and willpower! (and a poke in the nose for your dh! He could have at least eaten in the bathroom with the door closed! LOL)

i'm joining julie in being crabby...
i watched my dh have chips, reese's peanutbutter cups and not only eating ice cream in front of me but then he slowly spoon fed it to kirby & la la la !
i resisted junk food today and had fruit instead. i think i would have rather been sent to the principals office to search for that junk food !!

Lisa, The steps conversion chart gives 100 steps per minute for doing yoga, so go ahead and count it for both the steps challenge and this one. Just because it isn't jogging doesn't mean it isn't a workout! Does the yoga seem to help your pain? I've never tried it, but would like to sometime. Right now, my old body is falling apart on me!

Becky: Hope all is well! You're right though - we're stuck with our family! Don't worry about the vodka; sounds like maybe you needed it (lol) and it can probably count as water with grain. Actually, I just found this, which might make you swear off vodka for good!

we have one of those, she makes it a point to try to ruin every family event. we always thought it but then we knew it for sure when she was overheard in a store plotting her stragety with someone. the person who overheard told my mom and then we just watched her do exactly what was overheard !!! from then on we just expected her to do her thing and she still does it !!! i hope you get better results with yours !!

i hope the disturbing news dosen't affect you !! i didn't get the junk food prize today. even though a grilled hamburger patty is healthy, the homemade fried potatoes were not... they were junk food city !!! i should've JUST SAID NO !!! so i tried to be creative and make up the 10 pts by doing 40 min. on the bike.

Good job on those points, Linda! Guess I'm going to have to walk after all.
emoticon This is the face after going out to dinner for my nephew's b'day and discovering that the restaurant does not have a gluten-free menu and ordering steak (since I never have it) just to find out that the steak is pre-marinated and contains gluten so I cancel my order and search the menu for something "safe" which happens to be a salad with oil and vinegar and a platter of steamed vegetables. So, while everyone else is eating buffalo wings, artichoke dip, onion rings, steak, pasta, etc. I am sitting there munching on plain broccoli, cauliflower, soggy zucchini, baby carrots, and lettuce. When my sister looked over and asked how my dinner was, I moooed at her.

So now, I guess I need to go work off my dinner by taking a walk in the rain. You think 10 minutes should do it?

P.S. I'm so glad I have you girls here to let me rant and rave. I've been crabby for 2 days now and it's just not like me, so I don't know how to deal with it! Thanks for putting up with me! emoticon

YES, as your exalted leader I was jumping the gun! I did post too early with the hopes that I would stay true to my post! BUSTED!!!

I'm still OK unless you count Vodka as a 'Junk Food!' hmm.... Guess I need to subtract the junk food 10 points! I was OK until my sister called with some disturbing news! AGGHHH!

Did this challenge start today or yesterday? If it started today, aren't we jumping the gun a little, oh Exalted Leader? I see you've already given yourself the points for No Junk Food, but the entire evening is ahead of us. No nibbles of chocolate after dinner? No bites of cake or ice cream before bed? And who drinks 8 cups of water before 4:00? It's so cold here that all I want is hot tea. It's going to be torture to get 8 glasses of water down. And it rained when it wasn't supposed to, so now I guess my cardio is down the tubes. Can you tell I'm in a REALLY CRABBY MOOD?!?!?!?! I'm just giving you a hard time because I know you can take it. LOL. And besides, you can't be a leader without getting a little flak along with the glory, right?

Wow, Debra, with all that ice cream and birthday cake, you're doomed! Guess you'd better plan on drinking 30 cups of water that day to make up for the missing points! Well, actually, since the ice cream contains calcium, you really only need to atone for the cake. I just can't help you with that one unless it's carrot or apple cake or made with whole wheat flour.

Linda, I think you, Debra and I would have a ton of fun in the principal's office! Maybe this challenge will actually help our brains (I know mine needs it) with all this mental "bartering." "Hmmm, is this junk food or is it not junk food? Let me analyze the individual ingredients and see if I can come up with enough logical reasons to consume it."

Sorry to be cramping your brain, Becky! We're really just trying to help by stretching it a bit. I notice that your Mediterranean Diet Team is much better behaved. They all just signed up for the challenge with no questions asked. How boring is that? (They must be cat people. LOL)

You guys are TOO much!! I think the Principal has Fritos and Peanut Butter Cups hidden behind the bookcase! BUT now I understand!! Yes, it's the Terrier's fault! I guess we have to think like them in order to love them so much. LOL

Julie, you are a hoot! Your house must be a great place to be! I once suggested to my son that he go in to a business called Rationalizations Inc. because he could come up with a "good" reason for anything. I think you would put him out of business!

Becky, No list is necessary. We are just mimicking the behavior of our beloved terriers. I really do argue with myself though. The good news is that it is working to my advantage with the just one more minute of exercise thing. It's like having a built in coach. My hubby would probably say it is like having a built in nag!

You guys are so much fun that I may have to move to the West Coast just so I don't end up staying up all night just to see what I missed when I went to bed. Thanks for being you! emoticon

Can't you find a healthy choice for ice cream? No sugar added, double churned, low fat, yada-yada-yada... LOL OR How 'bout only one scoop instead of a huge ice cream sundae?

You be the referee on this and make the call. I don't actually look at ice cream as unhealthy. Everything in moderation. And you're right... it is a holiday that always calls for the ice cream to make an appearance! ENJOY!

I can see the chocolate, maybe the carrot cake, AND and the meringue cookies, BUT the Peanut Butter Cups and FRITOS??? Now that might be pushing things just a liiiitttttle too far! Well, THAT'S a relief! For a minute there, I thought I was going to have to cut out some of my favorite foods, but after further perusal, I realized that they are all essential to my good health and well-being. For example:

Chocolate: Rich in antioxidants; has been proven to help people live longer.

Carrot Cake: Veggies and carbs.

Fritos: One serving of vegetables (corn) and provides sodium, an essential nutrient.

Meringue cookies: Consist mainly of egg whites, a wonderful, low cholesterol diet food.

Peanut Butter Cups: See above re: chocolate; plus peanut butter, a high-quality protein containing Vitamin E, Vitamin B3 and large amounts of beneficial minerals such as iron, magnesium, potassium, copper and calcium. It also contains resveratrol, which means that you can reap the benefits without getting tipsy from that glass of red wine!

Whew, glad I got that straightened out! I'm going to do great on this challenge!

OK you two... do I have to get my "mommy's voice" out to talk to you? You both know what foods are 'junk foods!' I don't think a protein bar would be considered in the 'junk' catagory. LOL Defining what would be 'junk' is totally up to you. What do you think?

Julie, You beat me to the punch. I have this "thing" with protein bars. I really don't think they are the best thing because no processed food is but there are many days that I really rely on them. They do have a good deal of nutrition in them! I am stepping it up, I use to be addicted to diet coke but there is no longer room for anything but water.

Becky, Thanks for duplicating:) I have a permanent brain fog and this makes things much easier. I use to have tons on rules too (seriously, my family use to laugh about rule #s) but now I can't remember them so my life is a lot simpler! Thanks for taking the time to do all of this!

Um... can we define "junk food?" I live in the grey areas, so I need some guidance here. LOL. When I've treated myself to a gluten-free cookie from the bakery, I've never thought of it as "junk." (In fact, in my frame of reference, it's "priceless.") Or, are you just thinking of chips and soda? It's ok if you want to include my treats - I'll just drink extra water or walk for an 5 extra miles or something.

Many of you are on my Mediterranean Way Team, so I apologize for giving you the same challenge for both teams, but this challenge is such a good challenge for all of us to do I had to break personal my rule (Rule #26) and share the same challenge for both teams.

This challenge is to establish the DAILY HABITS.

This week, record all your food in Spark. Stay within your daily calorie range, eat NO junk food, and drink your water. Add to this a minimum daily cardio exercise of 30 minutes and you made steps toward a healthy lifestyle!

HOW TO SCORE:

- FOOD TRACKING -- Record all food in Spark - Earn 20 points for each day you are within your calorie limit.
- NO JUNK FOOD: Earn 10 points
- WATER: Each 8 oz is 1 point. (No Limit)
- CARDIO: Each minute is 1 point. (No Limit)
