I justify buying certain things to keep the jars- the lids are in a basket and I just find ones tha tfit.
So- they were all foods- tomato sauce..I even buy the expensive sa;lad dressing from whole foods because the jars are great for milks

I'm not much of a planner- more of an improv person. But if you put in enough hours it works as s system!

That glass food storage set from Amazon looks good!

Oh good! No need to invest in the Container Store?

I have saved glass jars in assorted sizes but they eat up a lot of pantry shelf space just sitting empty. Their lids are a little more organized lined up in a plastic rectangle shaped container. So aggravating to hunt for the right size lid when I used to toss them all into a big basket.

Zippy, I like that your collection are all the same size with color-matched lids.

LOL I've got the plastic takeout container collection too ... in 3 sizes. I became proud of the neat stacks of plastic when an article about kitchen storage showed up on my mail list and I read that Serious Eats suggested using these. Actually they suggest buying brand new ones in packs of 50 and mine are all reused, but that's a different discussion. If you haven't seen it, Serious Eats is an amazing resource for anyone who enjoys the art and science of cooking and baking (and it's funny) ... with tempting recipes (including recipes during an editor's annual vegan month). My son had to stock the kitchen for his own meals at his college house and wanted some of those containers. I was going to buy him "real containers" but he wanted what I use.

I'm glad we are starting in March - I can "cheat" and buy steel cut oats emoticon

I find saving jars helps. I don't normally use the little plastic containers from take out but do like to sometimes. I find masking tape is necessary...I need to get a better marker

Getting rid of expired products sounds good to me too.

Thinking about my pantry ... which I don't do often ... so just planning is a great first step for me.
Also ... organization ideas. Everything from containers to making sure older products get used first. Practical and efficient ideas. For example, I would like to start using more and a greater variety of dried beans ... and not just keep some old ones in glass jars looking pretty. Share ideas of "what's in your pantry" and what are your pantry staples. I've collected quite a few kitchen tools and appliances over the years ... should donate or toss some ... or actually use them.

Gail ~~ I say buy what you need to fill your pantry.

How about we start the challenge at the beginning of March. February is over in just over a week. We can take this week to make sure our pantries are full. Also, throw out any expired goods. Let's post how we are doing and share different tips and recipes that we create during our challenge.

I'm with you on wanting to save emoticon !

Is it cheating if I buy food for my pantry first?!?! My pantry shelves look like Old Mother Hubbard's cupboard. I've cut back on shopping bags because of the ice, before that the extreme cold ... I guess winter got the best of me this year but I know I'm not alone with thinking this is a rough winter. I spent this afternoon with my shovels. More fluffy white stuff and freezing rain is on the way to my home.

so- I made a mayo yesterday- IT IS SO GOOD!!!
It is vegan- and those casn be pricey- I know mine was cheaper.. but not sure
I combined 2 recipes.
The key thing I did though is not use any of the water in the recipes- I just used more aquafaba.
The kind I end up with is viscous. I cook my chickpeas in an instant pot with only enough water and it comes out thick..anyhow-
here are the 2 recipes-

MiracleNaise Soy-free Vegan Mayo
A little bit of xanthan gum makes this mayo thicker and keeps it from separating, but it’s not essential.

Ingredients
1 14-ounce can artichoke quarters drained well
1/4 cup raw cashews (about 1.5 ounces)

Place all ingredients into a high-speed blender and process until completely smooth.

Good morning!
Yes- I can post it as an ongoing one. A combo of using up what we have and a frugal one?
I know I am always trying to eat well but not spend too much. Sometimes I go a little crazy with buying too many exotic things.. or even not just exotic.. I have enough bay leaves for life!
16 oz. bag.I go so used to buying in bulk.

I am a little late to the conversation……..life has been a little hectic. I will joining in on the pantry challenge. I have decided to begin the challenge immediately. This is the perfect time, because I just went grocery shopping the other day. I will not be buying any groceries until I have used up everything in my house. I will make exceptions for milk and coffee-mate. Other than that, my goal is not to buy anything. I will let you all know how it goes. Please post about your progress. Also, keep posting the tips that you find.

There is a recipe in the prevent Hear Disease for lemon cupcakes..think it uses tofu though.. I don't have that.. maybe find another dessert recipe..or yep- could make lemonade!

Good idea! emoticon emoticon is that a green apple emoticon??
I don't find organics in the bargain rack but tha is ok- I got peppers from there- I am roasting
-got tons of lemons so will use them up
campari tomatoes -either roast or pico de gallo- I don't have the jalapeno..
and that was it yesterday

For March- I guess if we do a pantry type challenge?/frugal//..we woul dneed to figure out what that means.
For some it could mean not buying anything- or much of anything..or make a rule to just buy a few things..and in my case - I can't resist the bargain produce..need to rescue it to turn it into something!!
..so..for me..I am going to try to do 2 things
Lower my costs
-buy very little
oh wait one more thing..be creative with what I have...

I can't resist that produce bargain rack! This afternoon I cooked a big pot of applesauce made from a bag of some slightly bruised macintosh apples with a few fuji apples.

so- for pantry challenge-
The only food I will buy-
Greens-inludes parsley.. yes I should probably grow it ..parsley is very high in vitamin C- so I try to use it in almost everything. I like cilantro too

Onions and garlic

Fruit

Potatoes-cuz I love them!

I found some stuff on the reduced price produce- a bunch of bananas -40cents I will wrap and freeze them for smoothies or nice cream

and a couple of zucchinis I am going to sautee

I will say- that if I see bargains on the reduced produce I will most likely buy

I have plenty of fozen blueberries ... etc.. so it will be good to lower food bill and use up what I have too.

It is a cold and windy day
- I am thinking of doing a pantry challenge soon...
I looked up frugal pantry challenge because if you google veg ones you just get ones about purging and what I wan to do is buy very limited amounts of food and use up what I have-

anyhow- that is an example but my experience would be as a vegan -so making nutmilk and seed milks- I even have a culture I have not used so hope to make yogurt FINALLY!

And I thought of extending as a thing we could all do?- maybe in March.
Anyhow- I will do it!
. Using up what I have and buying some fresh fruit and veggies like kale and lettuce but using up things I have bought in bulk- for example I have chickpea flour and there is a kind of tofu you can make from that as well as "omelettes"
so yeah!

I love sunchokes- so good!!!

you all reminded me of what I call my own dark ages...took a job running a black and white darkroom for the navy. Began it beginning of December.
Drove off in the dark. Worked in the dark. Prints of things I can't disclose. Drove back home.
Made food poor food and drink choices. Buy March I'd had enough.. it might have "felt" better by Spring but I was too tired!- and I was only in my 20's. Paid well..but I was single.

I always try to remember that each day is getting more light. Of course when our longest day hits it goes the other way towards darkness

And actually I don't think it was the darkness that got to me so much as the work environment -lack of fun and learning...

I have a piano lesson today.. raining out...
I like to walk to it but most like will drive

Gotta go make a lunch for DH. He has refrigerator blindness

Hello,
Just sharing that I tried Jerusalem artichokes or sunchokes for the first time and really enjoyed them. My morale seems to be weather related and weather dictated. Does anyone else feel the weather impacts their mood/motivation?

Spring cleaning! We can join the hot new trend and reorganize. Anyone watching the Netflix show? I haven't seen the show or read the book but ... let's Kondo-ize. When I get the urge to clean (not often!), I have to get it done right away or I move on to something else. So I'm okay if we start spring cleaning now. It even feels like spring here today. Last week the thermometer said 0 degrees and it is 62 outside today!

First- don't beat yourself up and there are plenty of people who experience this.
Also there are many reasons for going vegan/ vegetarian.

And some eat less meat. Some go all vegan- no animal products of any kind. A range.

It does not have to be binary. Many shades of grey is ok!

For meatiness-meaty- it can mean satisfying so on thing is to make sure you are eating enough too. Vegetables don't have to be side dishes any more
Mushrooms- are very good - I have them all the time. Some times my store sells them cheap and I take them home and cook them down right away- with spices liked smoked paprika and tamari sauce they are satisfying!
I also like jackfruit- but my DH does not.
Tofu- done tight as well as tempeh which should be steamed and marinated imo and then is sooo good!

and- thing is the sausages I Make from Miyoko Schinner's vegan Pantry book are far superior to anything I have bought as you can customize the spices and salt etc BUT Filed Roast si good- although expensive.
Honestly though meat is expensive as well it should be!

and of course no beating yourself up!!

Good idea! I have a quick question/need some guidance. I grew up a meat eater and I will be honest I love the taste of meat. I have been following a plant based diet off and on for about a year now. I know that I feel better when I do not eat meat or dairy. I have moments when I give in and eat meat. Does anyone else experience this? What do you do to get back on track? Do you beat yourself up or move on? How do you handle that? I could use some pointers for those moments when I slip up.

The gardening catalogs are coming in the mail and I do enjoy looking through them and daydreaming about my springtime garden. Every year I get a bit smarter about gardening. Last year I learned how to amend my soil so it would grow bigger plants with more blooms.

Last week I did a lot of sewing. I'm trying something new for me which is making greeting cards. I enjoyed buying the supplies and looking at craft magazines.

You are doing just terrific ! My weight loss has been slower but I'm happy about it. I've lost 7 pounds and can tell the difference. Today I went to the grocery mart and went around the aisles the long way to get in more walking. I've started the "The 30-Day Jumpstart Your Workout Challenge" today because I like the way the exercises are shown. They gradually get more difficult. emoticon

I do have a nice coat with a hat and gloves. Home and work are decent. I usually wear a sweater to stay warm without having to turn up the heat.

The other day it was 1 degree. Today it was 40 degrees. That's how it is in Pennsylvania. If you don't like the weather, wait 5 minutes.

How is everyone doing with their eating and exercising. I have been doing good the last few days ~~ making wiser food choices and moving more. I am excited to report that I have lost 14. 5 pounds this month. emoticon emoticon

I'm in a southern direction from you but it is still cold here.
Do you have a good warm coat and hat? Is the home or office a good temperature? I've been wearing layers when I go out especially to town where the stores and other places can be so hot inside.

It has gotten a lot colder here in Pennsylvania over the last few days. We are down to a whopping 1 degree. On the plus side, we have more snow and I got the privilege of shoveling my sidewalks....burning a few extra calories! emoticon emoticon

I will say that in this cold weather I am drinking a lot more hot tea. I am enjoying a wide variety of different flavors. I have also stopped adding sugar/sweetener to my hot tea. It has taken some getting used to, but I am enjoying the actual taste of the tea and not just the sweetness that all the sugar can add. emoticon

The snow is beautiful. Staying warm in it is another story, though. When I buy my winter clothes I get some of them large enough to wear long-johns underneath. When I go shopping or to church, volunteering, visiting...all that good stuff...I wear layers so no matter how much the place has turned up their thermostats I can be comfortable. I'm Scandinavian so I like cool temperatures and usually have my rooms set to about 60 degrees.

I love the snow, too, as long as I can stay warm in it. emoticon There have been times when I've been very, very cold. It has given me more compassion for wild life that needs water and extra food, so I take time to supply the ones I can.

Skiing, sliding on the toboggan, ice skating are all terrific things to do in wintertime.

We have snow. It snowed non-stop all day yesterday. I will admit that I love the snow. It looks so pretty. emoticon

I have been doing good with my workouts ~~ 25 days in a row. I am looking to increase my intensity over this next week. I am finding the more I exercise the better I feel.

Our day here is sunny. I can have the entire day off. I'm going to eat lightly and workout lightly, too. Mr. Santa is working in his shop and I can here him whistling a tune. Last year I made a scarf and mittens that have kept me warm when I'm outside walking.
