Probiotics help populate the healthy flora in your intestines. This keeps the enzymes in high numbers and allow them to break down and digest food faster and more efficiently. Use of antibiotics, pain killers such as ibruprophen, and RX medications and high fat foods, dairy and meats lower probiotic flora in the intestines. I take a probiotic on days I don't eat enough home fermented foods. Homemade sauerkraut, fermented veggies, miso soup, tempeh, kimchee, etc.

Can anyone explain why probiotics would help?

Yep, is sounds like you jumped into too much roughage too quickly! Besides trying Beano, you may also want to try taking probiotics... they sure helped me!

I think you jumped into a super high fiber, high bean diet too fast. Back off a little on the fiber and beans.. Up the starches that are a little easier to digest and then gradually add the fiber back in. This will allow you to completely empty the old smelly animal flesh stinky matter from your colon. You are probably not yet completely digesting all the fiber you are eating, because you are not making enough of the proper enzymes. Your body will make enough when it realizes you have changed your diet for good. Until then beano and cooking beans with Kombu really helps. Plus add some probiotics to your daily regimen.

Beans, cruciferous vegetables, & high fiber foods cause gas. Usually, things get better once our bodies get used to the foods. Slowly increasing fiber and gas causing foods that you aren't used to eating can help. Beano is a product that reduces gas that can help right away. We have a surgeon friend who swears by Beano to keep his operating room from being evacuated.

Sorry for the horrid topic title but that's exactly what is going on with me. I started the vegan lifestyle 1 week ago and everything was fine. I wasn't bloated anymore, and I was going regularly to the bathroom. Yesterday out of no where I started to have really bad gas and it's worse today. I'm passing gas every couple of minutes and it smells awful! What am I doing wrong? I'm not bloated and I'm eating raw and cooked meals. I feel great all the time and have lots of energy but this problem that has occurred from last night is so embarrassing that I want to leave work. I'm scared someone is going to come into my office at the wrong time.
