Thanks a lot, I do agree with all your tips, and I wish I could share them with my 20-something self! At that time, I didn't exercise, I used to eat what I wanted to (putting on weight wasn't a big problem, my metabolism worked better than now probably) and I couldn't cook anything. Health and weight weren't surely a priority for me. Well, it's better late than never, so now these tips are my rules! :)

Thanks all! I am glad you like the article. Nice addition, Rosalieesther!

One reason I wrote this post is because I have 3 nieces in college who are all headed down the same path I took... Drinking too much, not exercising, going on diets (e.g., by drinking Diet Coke, eating fewer calories/nutrients, and eating low-fat processed food), and thinking that the Standard American Diet is healthy! Both of my sisters (their moms) are obese, and continue to not really care about how their eating is affecting their health. That makes me sad, but maybe I can inspire them or my nieces, even just a little bit.

(I would like to inspire them to be veg'n too... But I think the first step is to get them to start caring about their health and to stop eating junk. Later, hopefully that care will extend to animals and the environment.)

I included lots of links and references, so hopefully others can find it useful too.

Great list! Thanks.

I would only add: When you start having cravings for things that are obviously wrong for your body, then before eating any of that junk, have a big bowl of spinach a potato or sweet potato.

It's amazing how that one trick changes everything. All of a sudden there's no craving. emoticon

Hi all! Following is a countdown of the top 5 tips I would give my younger self about preventing weight gain. I think #1 would have been my most crucial tip... Learning the truth about the unhealthiness of the Standard American Diet, and learning to embrace REAL food like veggies, fruit, and beans.
