That's what I try to do. If I find my carbs are a bit on the high side going into dinner, soft taco becomes taco salad. emoticon

That's a good point, STARSFORB.

I am so used to eating a whole, minimally processed, diet, I forget there are all kinds of other products out there, all kinds of things people eat.

Doesn't even enter my mind, so I don't even think to discuss it.

I would worry more about the ingredients of your food than the carb content, and if you pick the healthiest foods it should never be a problem.

Also, try replacing one meal with a salad (lunch is probably best) - you'll cut down on a ton of carbs! Just don't fill it up with croutons! Hehe! Although they do make some whole grain croutons.

As long as you are eating a healthful diet & keeping with in a caloric range, you should be fine. I know that there have been "diets" that recommend a certain # of carbs or cutting carbs, but that is too much thinking for me. The carbs to worry about are: white ones ( with the exception of potatoes) white sugar, white flour, white pasta. Also stay away from the Killer carb HFCS!

Thing I notice about most vegetarians and vegans is the carbs they get are far and away starchy carbs (potatoes, beans, rice, lentils, whole grains, pasta), then fruit, followed by not that much leafy greens and veggies.

If you swap out leafy greens and veggies for starches in that order, then you'll be doing pretty well.

The starchy carbs are where you get high volume of carbs. You can fill up on veggies and not have many carbs at all. (Well, that's pretty much what I do and I get around 140 most days, but I eat big salads 3 times a day.)

So a veggie stir fry, heavy on the veggies with rice is good.

A bean and rice burrito on a whole grain tortilla is also healthy ... but going to be a lot higher in carbs. (Which is fine, but 3 meals a day may be too many carbs.)

Lots of times I'll just swap stuff too, like the recipe calls for potato, I'll use cauliflower. It calls for couscous, I'll use broccoli stalks run through the food processor with the S blade.

Also if a recipe is starch heavy, like a bean and lentil dish, I'll make sure to have a solid salad on the side ... not just a little side salad, I'll make it bigger, but not full meal-sized, to help balance it out.

Or like that bean and rice burrito, maybe I'll use half as much beans and rice as usual, and load it up with extra tomatoes and lettuce (or collards or cabbage).

crykelly 100, you are doing good eating brown rice and couscous dont be afriad to continue to eat them, eating carbs dosent make you FAT, they are so healthy, try some quinoa and millet as well and oats are other good ones, not sure if you are a vegeterian or vegan, i am vegan and eat heaps and never feel hungry and i also never weigh or measure food i just eat high fibre good wholesome food everyday, the macdougall plan is awesome as someone has already said, i follow that as well as the E2 diet they are both my bible, so continue to eat your rice and couscous, i have rice and oats every single day for breaky , a huge bowl as well and it fills me up until lunch. That is the secret to weight loss, the full feeling and high fibre carbs are just the thing to do that.

You know, just trying to adjust to a new lifestyle is hard enough. As you go along, you will be adding other great foods to your diet.

Unfortunately, when I became a vegetarian I gained about 12 pounds before I adjusted my portions. I found the food was so wonderful that I would have humongous amounts of it emoticon .

Have fun discovering new flavors

Hi,

Carbs are actually good for you. You should check out www.drmcdougall.com/ . Carbs make you feel full while eating so much less.

I love my good carbs, I lost over 20lbs with the McDougall program.

According to some research, many doctors agree that good carb helps weight loss.

Have fun

well being a vegan and keeping carbs down may be tricky i guess but as i am a vegan i do have a diet very high in carbs as what would we eat with out carbs unless it was meat. I dont have any trouble losing weight on a high carb diet, is that the problem you are talking about? fruit, veg, wholegrains and beans all have carbs in them but they are also healthy and have no fat and full of fibre so unless you are really worried about the carbs i would judt eat good wholesome non animal ffod.
