Stategies for Salad Bar Survival, by Becky Hand,Licensed & Registered Dietitian
has given good advice in her article dated 5-11-05. She had included a handy chart to easily look up the food, amount, calories, and fat grams. I've printed out the ones I would normally choose plus some new choices I would make and have tucked into the inner zip pocket of my purse. Thanks Ms. Hand.

There are a few restaurants near me that have very good vegetarian eggrolls.

As for Italian restaurants, many of the soups and bean dishes in Italian cuisine are plant-based. Minestrone soup is often meat-free. Pasta (egg-free) with tomato sauce and basil or pasta with hot pepper and garlic is on many menus. All vegetable pizza with herbs is good, too, and you can choose to skip the cheese.

Hi, I haven'r been around in years but can't put off eating right any longer. I agree Kelly but just as restaurants are becoming more flexible. some aren't. at dennys I wanted backed fish and found that they didn't even have an oven. preparation is on a grill or microwave. Couldn't get backed fish at bob evans because it is pre breaded. Many resturants use prepackaged foods and adjustment is not possable.

I'm glad I read some of the comments - I would never have thought about doing one of those build your own burgers minus the meat patty! Duh! (I once ordered huevos rancheros minus the huevos ;) )

I find most places are pretty flexible, too, and definitely willing to accommodate when you're friendly to start with. I usually warn the person waiting on me that I'm going to be a "pain in the a**" before I start - usually gives them a laugh and they're more willing to be helpful.

I'm finding with more and more people out there with specific dietary needs that waitstaff and kitchen staff expect it more often and don't get bent out of shape over it like they did even 10 years ago. If they're not catering to a veg*n, they're catering to someone with gluten intolerance or other allergies.

Thai food usually have vegan/vegetarian/gf options, and so does Indian food. Souplantation is one of my favorite vegetarian salad buffets.

I've learned about a great new app called "Happy Cow." You can input your zip code and it will give you restaurant options that have vegan and vegetarian options. Check it out.

Middle Eastern places usually have good options such as falafel or hummus, along with veggie kabobs.

Believe it or not, I find the best choices at buffets. Salad bar, asst'd sushi, stir frys (minus the oil), bean dishes, spring rolls, steamed veggies, pasta w/marinara sauce, steamed or baked potato/sweet potato... the list is endless.

Salad bars in restaurants are quickly disappearing. It's good to know that Ruby Tuesdays has a good one that appeals to vegetarians.

This has been a challenge for me because most restaurants here in NE Brazil don't accomodate vegans & vegetarians. I did find one two weeks ago that serves at lunchtime and I can get a to-go meal to bring home. I am the ONLY vegan/vegetarian in our circles of people and so I find myself explaining a lot and it gets tiring. Most people ask but then partway into an explanation, their eyes glaze over and I quickly end what I was saying. They're not THAT interested! And I've had several terribly uncomfortable situations where the other(s) make fun of my choices and I become the subject of conversation! So my tendency nowadays is to do all I can to not eat out or in a group that is unfamiliar with my choices. When I do go out, I eat first at home and often take my own food so I don't get in a situation where I have nothing, which has happened more times than comfortable!

The main challenges for me have been and are:
~knowing I'm eating nonorganic produce
~not knowing whether or not MSG was used, which it probably was b/c that's the norm
~tired of the normal garden-type variety of salads offered in most restaurants
~bottled water that I know has been in high heat temps. b/c the normal outdoor temp is around 100 degrees F yeard round
~watching others gorge themselves with bad food choices
~holding my tongue, especially when asked!

I had the most wonderful Thai food last night. My plate was so full of veggies, and by limiting my rice to 1/2 a cup and only 1/2 an egg roll, I stayed within my calorie range.

Wholeheartedly endorse the happycow website! I am mostly vegan at home, but a more flexible vegetarian in restaurants since depending on where you are it can be difficult. I've eaten at more steakhouses and churrascarias than any vegan/vegetarian should ever claim. It's all about asking lots of questions and not being afraid to order stuff not listed on the menu. If it's a real restaurant with a real chef (not fast food or a chain), I find they're usually quite willing, sometimes even eager, to create something for you with all the vegetables/pasta/beans they can find in the kitchen.

We eat out frequently and I've come up with a couple things that work for me in ethnic restaurants.
Mexican: order veggie burrito or tostado with whole beans and no rice or tortilla., extra avocado and veggies.
Chinese: Broccoli Beef or Curried Chicken....sub tofu for meat, no rice.
I dont have it all figured out but these work for me.

I can usually eat vegan anywhere I go. I meet a friend once a week for wings. He eats wings and I eat a "build your own burger" without the burger. I order a ton of mushrooms and veggies on in a bun. It's delicious. emoticon emoticon

I've been going to Panera, Chipotle and Whole Foods a lot more. We actually have a lot of restaurants nearby that allow me have a strict vegetarian diet (no dairy, no eggs). I have to be really careful though as I'm both lactose intolerant and I have a tree nut allergy. While I would love to be able to have Indian food out, it's more bothersome to even make it worth the effort. I make Indian food at home so I don't miss eating out for it. :)

I believe that you can find something that's vegetarian (if not vegan) at almost any restaurant. We've all had tons of practice. However, I've found the hardest is traveling w/ people on a tight schedule/budget and they want to get fast food. My stand by is always taco bell. I feel they have the best choices. However, Wendy's and Burger King also has a solid choice. McDonald's and Arby's are no bueno.

I've recently discovered that if I type in something like: Vegan Olive Garden (or whatever restaurant I want to go to) in an internet search, information on the best vegan choices at that restaurant comes up. Very handy!

I'll admit I'm a little spoiled since I live in Seattle. It's a pretty health conscious town. I've never been some where that didn't have at least one vegetarian option, even the pubs around here have a veggie burger on the menu. I moved here 2 years ago from Minnesota and the options were a lot more scarce there. My secret weapon was if I was going to go out with friends I'd suggest Indian food. Indian food is vegetarian to begin with, they add meat for people who follow a western diet, but the sauces and recipe's all start out vegetarian. It's much nicer than going out for Chinese food and having to ask if there is fish sauce in everything on the menu.

I'm vegetarian, eat out frequently. I get bean, cheese, and rice burritos at the local place here. I don't know if where you guys live, you have the small taquerias. I will get bean and cheese burritos at Taco Bell or Carl's Jr. I get tofu, veggies, rice, veggie chow mein, veggie spring rolls at Chinese places. If I want vegan, some places locally offer felafel or other veggie burgers. Subway offers some options. Veggie bagel sandwiches are always good

I have found several restaurants have at least a few vegetarian options. More and more are actually listing them so they are easy to find. There is a Mexican place here called Chuy's that offers a vegetarian combo with a cheese stuffed poblano pepper, enchilada with cheese and spinach, rice and black beans with a nice roasted tomato and pepper salsa...so good.

I haven't had the opportunity to eat out as a Vegetarian Yet. I just recently adopted this lifestyle due to my spastic bowels and the fact that I just can't handle eating "on the cheap." I get runs or the constipation often or I should say I "used to" I'm so glad I decided to make this change for my health but I am going to try to avoid eating out if at all possible since around here all we have are fast food chains. If I do fast food it's asian salad minus the chicken for me.

If you did not give me the strength, I would still be too shy to stand.

My daily strength motto I created myself.

Oh my goodness. I finally got around to trying that taco place.
They really need to add their menu to their website (http://tacosandtattoos.com/), but let me just tell you... they let you choose your protein, so everything on the menu can be made vegan. They offer mushroom (not really a protein, but "meaty" enough, I guess) and tofu - and I had one of each. The only catch is that you have to ask them to not give you cheese or sour cream with it, because they otherwise automatically give it to you. (The server though, was awesome, and double checked before putting the order in.)

SO GOOD!!!

I can't wait to go back.

Vegetarian Chinese Takeout recipe: Kung Pao Tofu

If you're like me, once in a while you get that craving for chinese take out food. As a vegetarian, options are limited, but I found this recipe that totally satisfies this craving and it is actually healthy too!

It has 200 calories, 11 g of fat and 12 g protein per serving (without rice).

Today I had a great burrito with beans and grilled vegetables. I poured salsa over it and ate the chips and salsa. It was so good. Waiters and waitresses are always amazed I don't want meat and cheese. Most people think you can't eat without these things.

I think ethnic restaurants are your best bet. I've been able to get veggie and tofu dishes at Asian restaurants, pasta dishes at Italian restaurants, (just order something with a tomato based sauce,) and I've also had good luck at Mexican restaurants with rice and beans, and veggie tacos. As someone else mentioned,

I've also had good luck at Chipotle, Panera, Moe's, and Subway as far as fast food places go, though I would suggest looking at the nutrition information on those websites, as a lot of the selections can be very calorie-dense.

I eat cheese so Mexican works for me. I am not always confident that the beans are truly vegetarian (refried in what?)

Yesterday we were at the hospital all day with my son and did not eat. We were so hungry by 4 p.m. and my husband wanted fast-food. I had a veggie burger and a few of his fries. Not healthy still but I didn't care by this point. I need to start keeping something in my bag (maybe canned fruit in juice).

Mexican is my favorite but it would be hard to accomplish if one doesn't eat cheese. I eat red meat occasionally but not pork so the charro beans and refried beans are out. Enchiladas and tamales, ditto. That pretty much leaves rice, chips, and salsa. The veggie quesadilla is the only thing I can think of as well.

I asked my husband to go a Mexican restaurant in town when he wanted to go out to eat. I was thinking I would be able to their vegetarian quesadilla without cheese. Well there was a communication problem and it came with cheese. Instead I ate chips, salsa and guacamole and let the kids have the quesadilla. I need to brush up on my Spanish before going again.
