"Who was Venn and his diagrams? Was he the most boring child ever?" (Sorry, Eddie Izzard moment.)

I agree that the nerdiness and geekiness overlap. From my experiences, it seems a nerd is the generalized computer/gamer kind of nerdiness, whereas a geek is into cosplay/anime/scifi, etc. I consider myself more of a geek, because computers may as well be spouting Aramaic for as much as I understand them.

I go with the venn diagram theory, there is overlap, but you can be a nerd without being a geeky or a geek without being a nerd.

My impression is that a geek focuses more on technology and gadgetry and has some social awkwardness while a nerd focuses more on theoretical science and less practical applications with social awkwardness.

I am not sure of what others' opinions are, but that is my impression.

I tend to be a nerd, I go okay with gadgetry and computers, but I am more drawn to theoretical science and am more than willing to get old school pen and paper on a problem. I have an abacus, but I only go that old school on accounting, since it is great for tallying bank accounts.

Yes. I think you can be a geek without being a nerd and vice versa. I think of a geek as referring to social awkwardness, video games, love of computers and gadgets, etc. Nerds are more just smart and like to talk about smart stuff. There is some cross over between them, but there are some distinctions. If I could draw a Venn diagram here of how they intersect, I would, because I am a nerd. (I'm also a bit of a geek, too!)
